Arrived at the party a tad late I guess. Thanks for the thread and all the updates guys . The addition of KB into the mix does spark some interest. And when was the last time Kamal did something that was high in quality but low in terms of the money invested? Hope Uthamma Villain is one such venture.

MX was made in a crore or less I guess (from what I've heard). Also really happy to see Crazy-Kamal combo after more than a decade.

Among the less-efforted ones, I know MX was not and so was MMA. Not sure if MMA was low budget though. What about Unakkul-Oruvan ? Mostly with just a laptop in an unfinished terrace and was a bo success. There was Vasool Raja MBBS as well. Can anybody provide some more information about these ventures ?

Unnaipol Oruvan (not Unakkul Oruvan ), ROI-wise was a big hit. The budget was just 12 cr and it made >=40 cr in Tamil & Telugu, which is more than 3 times the investment.
MX must have been profitable for RKFI but the distributors suffered losses. Kamal Haasan compensated them.
MMA was not a low budget movie. So no comments.
Singaravelan was a medium budget flick which did very well commercially, much better in B&C than in A centers (rare for a Kamal film).
Both Magalir Mattum and Sathi Leelavathy were made in shoe-string budget but turned out to be major money-spinners.

Vasool Raja (Super Hit), Thenali (Blockbuster), 5thanthiram (Below Average), PKS (Hit) - all these movies had a decent star cast & some songs shot abroad. Cant be considered as low budget ventures.

Gautam Menon in an interview said that he had some budget constraints while shooting Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu and that not much was spent on making it. He said something like "KH's salary formed a major chunk of the budget". It became a blockbuster.

There were problems in terms of finance for VV, but it was not a low budget movie. Good amount of money was spent for shooting in US and it was very much visible as well. The initial producer Khaja taken lot of money on loan and that also was a big problem, some how 7th channel Manickam Narayanan took over and cleared the debts. In the end it was a very profitable venture.
