Enthan Nenjil and Dillu Baru Jaane were instant hits.
But the stage songs were weak in both music and picturization. Kamal had given a big break to stage singer roles and a lot was expected from this movie. But Jadakku mudakkaana sarakku was just mediocre, with inane lyrics like "deengu danga". Another stage song, "Kalaignan Kattu Kaaval" had some unrelated and unnecessary flashback scenes - probably introduced to confuse viewers. It backfired.
Other possible reasons for its failure.
- Other than Kamal, Sivaranjani and Nasser, the cast members were all new.
- Villain not strong enough (he was a Kannada hero) & his motif wasnt too convincing.
- little or no comedy (that Kannada inspector was annoying)
- Nasser, as usual, wasted.
- Was released few days +/- Roja
Positives
+ Kamal's look, style and costumes were aasam.
+ BGM, especially the water drop, rocked!
+ The two songs mentioned above
+ The Knife fight with Sivaranjani's boy friend was Marana Mass!
+ Suspense was maintained till the very end

Kalaignan was released in 1993 much after Roja (August 92) and Thevar Magan (Deepavali 1992).
Release date was the same as Roop Ki Rani Chooron ka Raja(which ended up as a disaster).
I liked the movie when I watched it,saw it 3 times in the theatre I guess, but the film has not aged well. Some of the action scenes looked amateurish(line of Ambassodar cars allowing Kamal to run up on them)when I watched it sometime back on TV.
Flashback was unnecessary and Kamal looked flat in the emotional scenes of the song.
But the film was stylishly made,Bindiya was gorgeous, couple of songs were Good, the lines introducing Kamal's character,Indrajit, was cool and the suspense was maintained throughout.
The villain was Kannada actor/director Guru dutt
Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.

Vishwaroopam 2's young-gun for Uthama Villain too
Kamal Haasan's next offering after Vishwaroopam 2 would be Uthama Villain directed by Ramesh Arvind and produced by Thirrupathi Brothers. Kamal is reported to be playing an ageing superstar in the movie.
We have an update regarding the technical team of Uthama Villain. Promising young composer Ghibran who happens to be one of the main crew members of Vishwaroopam 2, is set to compose for Uthama Villain as well. He has also apparently composed 4 songs for the film already. Kamal Haasan is also expected to pen lyrics for the movie, as he generally does for some of the songs in his films.
Uthama Villain will be shot in full swing once Kamal is free from his commitments for Vishwaroopam 2. He recently updated that CG works are happening in full swing for this sequel to 2013's blockbuster, Vishwaroopam.

Three heroines for Kamal Haasan
Kamal Haasan is all set to go on floors withUthama Villain this month. The film, directed by Ramesh Aravind, will start rolling in Chennai, and we hear that the Ulaganayagan will have three heroines in it. However, we understand that none of the names have been finalized yet.
A source close to the project tells us, "Kamal and Ramesh will hold the pooja launch of the film in Chennai on February 24. They will start shooting some sequences in the city before they go in for a schedule break. The film will have three heroines, and the team has approached some of the top actresses for the roles. Kajal Aggarwal, Tamannaah and Trisha (with whom Kamal earlier acted in Manmadan Ambu) are some of the names that are being bandied about. It's expected that Ramesh will zero in on his heroines by the end of this month."

Wonder what the scope is for 3 heroines ... Anyways the movie will also see Vivek being paired up with Kamal for the first time.
