In 2012, Kamal Haasan’s critically acclaimed film Pushpak completed 25 glorious years. That year, i managed to get in touch with the lead cast of the film, barring Kamal, to hear them share their experience about working on the film.

Tinnu Anand and Akkineni Amala, who were in the cast, recall their enriching shooting experiences and the powerful impact the film made on audiences. Also starring Pratap Pothan, Farida Jalal, P.L. Narayana, K.S. Ramesh and Loknath, director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao’s Pushpak released September 10, 1987

Actor-director Tinnu Anand said: “The film ran for 35 weeks in Bangalore, and left a deep impression.”

Not only that, the hospitality Tinnu received from Bangaloreans was simply overwhelming.

“My few visits to Bangalore after the release of the film quite amazed me. People would not even let me pay my bill in a hotel or restaurant. They would recognise me from the film and volunteer to pay the bill,” he said.

Tinnu played the role of an assassin, who uses a dagger of frozen ice to kill the character played by Kamal Haasan.

“I remember every night we used to fill the dagger mould with water and deep freeze it before going to sleep. By morning, though it would’ve frozen, it would eventually break when it was taken out. Finally, our director made a frozen dagger for the shoot with acrylic that looked almost real.”

The success of Pushpak doesn’t lie solely on one individual. It was neither the director nor Kamal Haasan, but a team effort, said the actor.

“We worked as a team and there was no schedule per se that was followed. Kamal had all the time for the film, and so did all of us. The director would sit in one corner and supervise us as we would prepare for the scene. We were given all the freedom to experiment and improvise with the output.”

In this age of remakes what surprises Tinnu Anand is that no one is thinking about a remake of Pushpak.

“I’m surprised that nobody even bothered to remake this classic. I would love to act in the remake ofPushpak. However, I would expect to be given the same freedom that director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao gave us on the sets of the film,” said Tinnu Anand.

It goes without saying that Pushpak was special for every actor who was part of the project. Amala, who played a magician’s daughter in love with Kamal Haasan, feels the film changed the course of her career forever.

“It was a film that changed the trajectory of my career in films and got me recognition as talent. The filming of ‘Pushpak’ was like going to acting school or film school for me,” said Amala.

“I learned so much about cinema and acting from Singeetham Srinivasa Raoji and Kamalji and all the talented technicians at that time. It was a great learning experience for me, a fun project to work on and an amazing response and recognition. These are films that actors remember and the audience never forgets”, she added.

Pushpak had a great effect on people and the actress realised it when she walked into an office a few years ago.

“I remember walking into an office a few years ago and an unknown gentleman came across the room to greet me, and I noticed his prosthetic arm. He told me how he had an accident during his college days and his arm was amputated. To cheer him up, his friends brought the DVD of Pushpak and played it every day till he got over the shock of losing his arm”, she said.

Pushpak may be 25 years old, yet its impact endures.

ஃபேஸ்புக்குல ஒரு கமெண்ட் பரவலா போயிட்டு இருக்கு. அதாவது எல்லா அப்பாக்களும் குழந்தைகளுக்கு பொம்மை வாங்கி தருவாங்க. ஆனால் ரஜினி மட்டும்தான் தன் மகளுக்காக பொம்மையாகவே ஆகிட்டார்னு. இந்த கமென்ட் பற்றி என்ன நினைக்கிறீங்க? இதுதான் கேள்வி. அதற்கு நிறுத்தி நிதானமாக பதில் சொன்னார் அவர். ‘ஒரு படம்னா அது குறித்து மாறுபட்ட கருத்துக்களும் வரும். அதையும் ஏத்துக்கணும். ஆனால் நான்தான் இந்த படத்தை மோஷன் கேப்சர் தொழில்நுட்பத்துல எடுக்கப்பட்ட படம்னு முன்னாடியே சொல்லிட்டேனே’ என்றார் சௌந்தர்யா.

மும்பையிலேர்ந்து நட்சத்திரங்களை இந்த பாடல் வெளியீட்டு விழாவுக்கு வரவழைச்சிருந்தீங்க. ஆனால் உங்கள் அப்பாவின் நண்பரான கமல் சார் வரலையே? என்ற கேள்விக்கும் பக்குவமாக பதில் சொன்னார் சௌந்தர்யா. கமல் சார் வரணும்னு நான் ரொம்ப ஆசைப்பட்டேன். ஆனால் அவர் ‘உத்தமவில்லன்’ படப்பிடிப்பில் இருந்ததால் வர முடியலே என்றார்.

கேள்விகளில் கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக காரம் கூடியது. கோச்சடையான் விளம்பரங்களில் வைரமுத்துவின் பெயருக்கு பிறகு வாலி பெயர் வந்திருக்கே? இந்த கேள்விக்கு மட்டும் சற்று குழந்தை தனமாக பதில் சொன்னார் சௌந்தர்யா. படத்தில் ஒரே ஒரு பாடல்தான் வாலி சார் எழுதியிருக்கார். மற்ற எல்லா பாடல்களும் வைரமுத்து சார் எழுதியிருக்கார். அதனால்தான் அவர் பெயரை பின்னாடி போட வேண்டியதா போச்சு என்றவரிடம், இருந்தாலும் வாலி சீனியராச்சே? என்ற துணை கேள்விகள் எல்லாம் எடுபடவே இல்லை. திரும்பவும் அதே பதிலை ரிப்பீட் செய்தார்.

Last week Ulaganayagan Kamalhassan started Uthama Villain directed by his good friend and co-actor in many films Ramesh Aravind. The film being jointly produced by director N.Lingusamy's Tirupathi Brothers and Kamal's home banner Rajkamal Films International is rapidly progressing as it is planned as a quickie.

Now the latest we hear his that Kamal has planned to finish his part in the film within 60 days. The shoot is expected to complete in mid May. After this, Kamal will start working in the remake of super hit Malayalam film Drishyam where he reprises the lead role played by Mohan Lal in the original.

The Padma Bhushan actor has allotted 50 days call sheet for the film directed by Jeetu Joseph and has reportedly signed the film for Rs.20 crores as remuneration.

Kamal & Sruthi's effort to bridge south and north east

Actor Kamalhassan and his actress cum singer daughter Sruthihassan have collaborated with an Assamese Singer Joi Barua in an effort to connect the south and north east. Joi Barua and Sruthi have sung together a 'Soulful fusion' of Tami and Assamese.

The Tamil lyric for the tune composed by an Assamese musician was written by Ulaganayagan Kamalhassan.
The song serves as a beautiful blend of Tamil language spoken in South India and Assamese spoken in North East India. The video of Joi Barua and Sruthi singing together is available in INKtalks website.
The fusion song would captivate not only the Assamese and Tamils but even the people who are new to both the languages, as they say music has no boundaries.
