Rahul Bhat (TV artisti) as Rahul, father of Kali

Girish Kulkarni ( National Award winning Marati actor) as Yadhav, the investigating polive officier

Siddhanth Kapoor (DJ and son of Shakthi Kapoor) as Siddant, uncle of Kali
Tejaswini Kolhapure (Model, Singer) as Rahul's Girlfriend
and
Anshika Shrivastava as Kali
Kali (read Kali as in Rose Bud and not Kaalee the Goddess), Kali is the child of divorced parents Rahul & Shalini. When Rahul is still in search of a carrier in films with the help of his friend/agent Chaitanya, Shalini has settled down with Shoumik, the police chief of Mumbai. Kali's uncle Siddhant, who is a real time crook seeks help of Shoumik for various of his illegal deals. During a Saturday, Rahul's custody parenting time, Kali goes missing. Inspector Yadhav files the case in not a very serious tone, until he comes to know his chief's responisibilty in Kali's life. A rapid & vigorous search is carried out, until the ransom call comes in declaring Kali's disappearence as a kidnapping. The beauty of the investigation of the police department with the aid of the family memebers of Kali is what Ugly is all about.
Screened at Cannes Film Festival (17/MAY/2013) under Directors Fortnight category, Ugly finally got a theatrical release exclusively in France this 28/MAY (limited screens - 41) and I had a wonderful chance to get to see this beautiful tale about Ugliness yesterday. Anuraj Kashyap's claim of working with the script since 2006 is visible on screen as he had essayed on the minature of a mamooth naration, which is not only crisp but quite intense too. Lauding Bala & Sasikumar whenever he gets a chance, Anuraj Kashyap's work Ugly has all the lightless areas those which are covered by these 2 TFI film makers. But through the film Ugly, Anuraj Kashyap has elevated his directorial skills. There are only a few film makers who design their scenes in such a way that they show you only what they want you to see. Bala does that, and thats why their works are quite gripping. Rest of the directors concetrate on everything by showing you a vast landscape that really does not serve as a "big thing" to the narrative of the story.
The opening of the film and the introduction of the characters are not only quick but the way its done proves the hold of the director on the script. The characters which are talking over the phone are conversing with someone else, but their conversation is glued with the jumbled dialogues and the quick cut scenes takes you back and forth resgistering the characters - the who is who - as after that it will not be reminded, but only their self is potrayed. Modern Mumbai is still shown in the backdrop of poverty dirven soceity (an aspect the westerners enjoy to watch - actually this story can work even in the rich society of Mumbai, but for some reason Anuraj Kashyap wants to mingle in as a film maker who makes films for such audiences). The modernity is quite well excuted in the investigation. It does not cross any lines, but sticks to few explanations - whether one understands it or not is irrelevant to the story as its based on the entourage of kidnapped girl and not the investigation itself.
Just like in any Anuraj Kashyap movie, you get to hear some awesome Pop-Rock music throughout. They are quite loud and aggressive suiting the ambience and mounting a bit your pressure meter. When one by one the characters step outside their shoes, the film ultimately comes to a corner banging itself with Christopher Stanley's Money theme song (goes something like THa Ra RA Ra Rum - the one you see in the trailer). Its here you slide down your seat, the attack of the Uglies at its full swing. GVP should get more accolodes for producing such original pieces. The director's main tool is juggling with the characters as effective as possible. So he does not look for any neatness or uniqueness in motion angles. Camera goes static to moving and gives an immense feel of getting along with the movie.
The Casting is perfect. Each artist come from different platform of entertainment - TV, model, DJ, theatre artist - and they unite to give us the most natural performence possible. Girish Kulkarni is in complete form. All the artists put together take away any remaining beauty that still stuck to the film Ugly.
Few scenes would be disturbing and the language is quite offensive. Well the film itself is aggressive whole of its runtime. As the movie deals more on emotional level, there are not gory violence but the violence is quite raw. Its dryness can be shocking. The film seeks your enorme attention, which goes unfavourable for the movie. And with subtitles it can get confusing where you land up not quite understanding what you just witnessed. The events of the characters potrayal and behaviours can be denied by a set of audience and a question always rises - Does our society have such people ? As usual, the answer lies within the audience. Personally I will not doubt it, eventhough few segments in the film tries to go over board, we humans are capable of doing the ultimate, even if its not what we are put on this world to do. But, be reminded, its just a tale, more interesting than a cop story trying to chase the baddies in the heart of Mumbai City.
So whats Ugly all about ? Can't tell you without giving away the spoilers, but can try to give you a clue : How far would one go, to get the money for their loved one ? Watch the movie, come back, read the above sentence - if you get it this time too, then thats what Ugly is all about !
Ugly : Beautiful
