A giant Ferris wheel is already up, as are some colourful rides, including a 'Brake Dance' canopy. Sweet shops with their colourful shamianas have started to line the road outside the open field, stacking up bright yellow jalebis. The Yashwant Baba Yatra is held every year in Mayani for 10 to 15 days in March. This is also the only time that villagers get to watch movies on 35 mm, with six screens simultaneously showing films in the open area from six in the evening to six in the morning.

"People come with their families and spend the entire night watching films. They catch one show at one talkie at 6 p.m., then decide which one to see at 9 p.m., followed by two more shows, one at midnight and the following at 3 a.m.," says Bagwan, whose father started Amar Talkies years ago along with his brothers. Earlier in the day, his tempos had made the round of the village to announce the screening of Maidan-e-Jung and distributed pamphlets.

Across the road, Balkrishna Touring Talkies is screening Arjun—the Warrior. The two companies have little competition today as the other four—Alankar Talkies, Anup Talkies, Krishna Koyal Talkies and Laxmi Talkies—will only set up their paraphernalia the next day. No one is unduly worried. They know the crowds will keep coming for the next10 days to each of the six screenings.

"Masur, a neighbouring village, was a bit low-key but Mayani should be better," says Inamdar. By the end of March, the talkies will move to Shignapur, and then they will go into overdrive. "In Shignapur, we will have screenings 24 hours a day. Here in Mayani, we couldn't pitch the tents because of the winds, but there, we will put up tents on the hillsides. We hope to draw over 500 people for every show. We were the first people to devise the concept of black tents in 1994, after which the screening of films in daytime became possible," says Nitin Deshpande of Alankar Talkies. The movie caravan will roll into other villages—Pusegaon, Pali, Aundh, Kole, Javel—all within 50 to 100 kilometres of each other.

THE world of touring talkies is a self-contained one. The 10-odd people who travel with each unit carry their utensils, beds and belongings. The owners, most of whom hail from Vaduj in Satara district, make it a point to be there during the screenings. Working just six months a year on the talkies, most have other businesses ranging from agriculture to small stores. The employees, most of whom are now in their sixties, are old hands, recruited when they were in their twenties.

By now, they know just what the audience wants. The most popular films, they say, are Marathi, followed by South Indian action films. "Hindi and English (dubbed in Hindi) don't do too well here. Once, when we were about to show Dhoom at one of the villages, people tore down the poster and asked us to show the Marathi hit Harve Kumkum," says Tushar Tarlekar, a unit worker with Amar Talkies. Tarlekar travels six months with the group, earning a total of Rs 10,000. When he is not touring, he helps his mother run an eatery in Satara.

Interestingly enough, some of the talkies even manage to hold a premiere of some Marathi movies and get actors like Milind Gunaji or Upendra Limaye to put in an appearance at the show. Most owners are also distributors and that helps bring in popular films. Anup Talkies is one of the few companies that has showed Hollywood films dubbed in Hindi. "I showed 2012 at the last place and it had a reasonably good response," says owner Anup Jagdale.

The owners have also worked out their own formula for attracting crowds. "Mythological films are great hits. We also prefer them as they attract women and women always come with their children or husbands, which means more numbers. But women don't stay late. So we show these films first. The late night screenings are confined to action films as there are only men left in the audience by then," says Bagwan.

According to Jagdale, who is also president of the Touring Talkies Association of Western Maharashtra, there is a tacit understanding amongst all members that there will be no screening of adult or "bold" films. And while there are stories of people demanding the rewinding of such scenes or a steamy song, owners say they do not really give in to the 'once more' cries.

A six-month travelling stint costs each company approximately Rs 70,000 and the profits are unpredictable. In fact, the dwindling fortunes of the talkies are a matter of concern for the owners. "There is little left in this business now," says Bagwan, who has decided against travelling to any other village and will only participate in the yatra in his hometown Mayani.

TV, cable and cheap CDs available in the market make it tough for the talkies, they say. "We are housefull only during the main one or two days of the fair. The rest of the time, it's a struggle," says Bagwan.

The tough times get the owners nostalgic about the good old days. While Inamdar feels that the '70s were the best period for him, Deshpande says the golden period was 1994-2000. "Cable and TV had still not taken over so much then. But today's times are bad," says Deshpande, who lives in Pune and works in the construction industry while his father and brothers handle the family business in the village.

Yet, no one is quite ready to sound a curtain call. Vijay Mane, a clerk in a school in Mayani, and a regular at the shows during the talkies' 10-day annual halt in his village, insists that nothing can replicate the ambience of open-air viewing with family and friends. "There's a certain magic to it. We have multiplexes in Vitha and Karad nearby but there's nothing like the talkies," he says.

But there is little getting away from the fact that the industry desperately needs a new lease of life. Something that the occasional spotlight on it has failed to deliver—be it the 2006 film Truck of Dreams by London-based film maker Arun Kumar on a young village girl who abandons her life and follows her dreams with the help of a travelling cinema, or Israeli-born combat photographer Torgovnik's photo-essay on the talkies as part of a larger work. Will Road, Movie be able to do better? No one is quite sure. But what they are sure about is that the show must go on.

Speakers blared out popular yesteryear numbers, people opted for the thara (sand filled ground) ticket costing Rs.5 to watch their stars on the big screen, the murukku selling boy in a sprightly voice invited the crowd to taste the crispy snack…

Inside the world of tent kottayi (touring talkies)city’s cinema-crazy people relived tinsel town’s make-believe world. It used to be a major source of entertainment. Earlier there were 20 to 30 touring talkies in Madurai. Now only one is left which has a daily evening screening. “We don’t screen new releases but only old popular movies. Now people coming to watch it is also dwindling,” says M. Swaminathan, who has been running the Lakshmi Touring Talkies for more than 45 years in Tirupparankundram.

He rues touring talkies has lost its place to the sophisticated cinema halls. If at all, tent kottayi is remembered more for the experience of community gathering than the entertainment value.

“Watching a film in touring talkies was always exciting,” says R.Murali, Principal, Madura College. “Though there were benches and chairs, people preferred to sit on the sand filled ground to see the movie. There was an instant audience connect. I associate touring talkies with black and white movies.”

“The day when Oliyum Oliyum was telecast on TV, it marked the end of touring talkies,” says Swaminathan. “Everyday the satellite television shows 25 to 30 films. How can we expect crowd at our theatres,” he asks.

To grab peoples’ attention, the screen at this theatre is dotted with dancing lights that flicker to the music and song playing on the screen. “Those days theatre owners would distribute pamphlets to announcethe list of movies scheduled for screening. There were no permanent touring talkies then. Films were screened under thatched roof at different spots. After a fire accident in Tuticorin in 1979, the then State Government banned the use of thatched roof. Nowadays, light roof material (sheets made of waste plastics and tar) is used as a permanent roof at one spot,” says R.S. Rajan, Secretary, Yadharthaa Federation of Film Societies of India.

Earlier, the touring talkies owners would pitch their tents at a place to cash in on the festival season or near some temple during the temple festival in that particular area. “I remember watching a movie when I was in fourth standard. Then, culture of going to a theatre was entirely different, it was a family affair. I remember travelling from Uchipulli village to a nearby place called Ranganathapuram carrying torches in hand in the night to watch MGR’s Padakotti,” recalls M. Shanmugarajan, film actor.

Touring talkies used to be a place where people would sink all differences, economic or caste, and watch films together. Emotionally-driven, they felt proud to be identified as fans of a star. The rivalry between the MGR and Sivaji Ganesan fans are well known in these parts.

Touring talkies also played a major role during elections. They became an effective medium for canvassing. Dr.Murali describes it as a phenomenon that became a folk tradition breaking the class and caste barrier.

Touring talkies offered pure entertainment for less money. The benched ticket costs Rs.10 and if one chooses to take a chair, it costs another three rupees. This was also the place where small cyclostyled books carrying the lyrics of the songs from the movie sold like hot cakes. But alas, all this will soon become history when the last of the touring talkies at Tirupparankundram downs its shutters in three years.

சரஸ்வதி ஸ்கூல் விபத்து 60 களின் மத்தியில் நடந்தது நினைவிருக்கிறது. அதில் உங்கள் சகோதரி சிக்கிக் கொண்டதைப் பற்றி கேட்கும்போது சங்கடமாக இருக்கிறது.

நடராஜ் ஜெகதா என்று சொல்லியிருந்தேனே.. மிட்லண்ட் வெள்ளைக்கண்ணு விடுபட்டதன் காரணம் அவற்றிடம் போனது கிடையாது..(அரசரடி)..அதே போல ஜெயராஜ் ( நரிமேடு தானே..இன்கம்டாக்ஸ் ஆஃபீஸ் சைட்)..

ஷா.. நினைவில் இருந்தது..ஆனால் எந்த இடம் என எக்ஸாக்டாக நினைவிலில்லை..கலெக்டர் ஆஃபீஸ் தானே..? அது போல சரஸ்வதியும்.. அமிர்தம் தியேட்டருக்குப்பின்னாடியா சார்..? அவ்வளவாகப் போனதில்லை.. தினமணியும் போனதில்லை.. இந்த தின மணி, மிட்லண்ட்,வெள்ளைக்கண்ணு பட போஸ்டர்களெல்லாம் ரோஸ், பச்சை ஆரஞ்ச் காகிதத்தில் கறுப்பில் அடித்து “இன்று முதல் மணாளனே மங்கையின் பாக்கியம், கைராசி என மின்சார வாரிய நீள் செவ்வக பாக்ஸில் ஒட்டியிருக்கும் தானே..

போத்திராஜா எப்படி விட்டேன்.. எஸ்..இது பற்றி தேவிகா பற்றி எழுதிய போது எழுதியதால் மற்ந்திருக்கலாம்.. இரண்டு படம் பார்த்தேன்..ஒன்று ஆண்டவன் கட்டளை..இரண்டாவது பாத காணிக்கை.. (80 பைசாக்கு மாடி டிக்கட்!)

பாத காணிக்கையா ஆண்டவன் கட்டளையா நினைவில்லை..செல்லூர் தானே.. 25ம் நம்பர் பஸ் சென் ட்ரல் குலமங்கலம் அதில் ஏறி (அந்த்பஸ் கோரிப்பாளையத்தில் இடது பக்கம் – தேவர் சிலையிலிருந்து வெட்டி உள் செல்லும் என நினைக்கிறேன்) டாக்கீஸ்க்கு முன்னால் உள்ள ரோட்டில் இ\றங்கி படம் பார்க்கப் போனால். ஜாலியாகத் தான் இருந்தது படம் பார்க்கும் போது.. படம் விடும் போது ஒன்பதே முக்காலோ என்னவோ..வந்து சாலையோரம் நின்று நின்று கொண்டிருந்தால் பஸ் வரும் வழியவே காணோ.ம்.. சரி என எதிரில் ஆற்றின் படித்துறையில் தைரியமாக இற்ங்கி (அவ்ளோ ஒண்ணும் தூரமில்லை முரளிசார் இல்லியோ) பொசுக்கென நடக்க ஆரம்பித்தால்…

சுத்தமாக இருட்டு தான்..ஆற்றில் அங்கங்கே சிச்சிறிதாய் தண்ணீர் இருந்தாலும் நடக்க முடியும் தான்..தூரத்தே ஆல்பர்ட் விக்டர் மேம்பாலத்தில் பஸ்கள் செல்வதும் மெர்க்குரி விளக்குகள் அங்கிருந்த படியே ஹாய் கண்ணா எனச் சொல்வதுமாக இருந்தன..

இந்தப் பக்கம் கொஞ்சம் காலை எட்ட வைத்து நடந்து கொண்டிருக்க கொஞ்சம் சற்றுத் தொலைவில் ஏதோ எரிந்து வேறு கொண்டிருந்தது.. ஏதாவது பாடியோ..சேச்சே அப்படில்லாம் இருக்காது..ஒருவேளை இருந்தால்..என இப்படிப் பட்ட எண்ணங்கள் சின்னக் கண்ணன்மனதில் வர இறக்கை இருந்தால் பறந்திருக்கலாம்..எண்ணவோட்டத்திற்கு ஈடாய் நடைவேகம் கூட மாட்டேன் என்கிறது..சே..என நொந்திருந்த போது..தம்பீ…….

அப்போது தான் ஒரு சிற்றோடைபோன்ற தண்ணீரில் கால் வைத்திருந்தேன்.. இந்தக் குரல் அழைப்பது யார்.. கண்ணா..ஏற்கெனவே லேட் .. வீட்டுக்குப் போனால் அப்பா வையும் அம்மா கவலை..அண்ணா எங்கடா போனேன்னு திட்டும்.. இப்போ கூப்பிடறது யார்..

திரும்பினால் வெகு தொலைவில் ஒரு வெளிச்சப் புள்ளி அது மெல்ல மெல்ல என் அருகில் வருவது போல இருக்க…

பின் என்ன ஒரே ஓட்டமும் நடையும் தான்… பேச்சியம்மன் படித்துறை பின்னால் உள்ள படிக்கட்டுகளில் வந்து ஏற – அங்கு சில ஆள் நடமாட்டம் இருக்க தைரியமாகத் திரும்பினால் அந்த வெ.பு வும் தொடர்ந்து வர.. கிட்டக்கப் பார்த்தால் முண்டாசு கட்டிய ஆள்.. என்ன தம்பி.. தொணைக்கு பேசிக்கிட்டு வரலாம்னு கூப்பிட்டா இந்த ஓட்டம் ஓடுறீங்க என்றா.ன்.. செல்லூர் வாசியோ என்னவோ..

ஹி ஹி எனச் சொல்லிவிட்டு ஏறி இடதுபுறமிருந்த சந்தில் உள்ள ராகவேந்திரர்கோவில் இருந்த திசையில் கும்பிடு போட்டு பேச்சியம்மன் கோவில் கடக்கும் போது நின்றுகும்பிட்டுப் பார்க்கையில்..

பூட்டியிருந்த கோவிலின் உள்ளிருந்த அம்மன் முகத்தில் அழகிய புன்னகை…

யெஸ் குரு.. சம்பந்தமூர்த்தி தெரு தான்.. கல்லறை ஸ்ட்ரீட் நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது.. அதன் முக்கில் ஒரு கனரா பாங்க் இருக்கும் ..ரோடு முடிந்துஇடது புறம் திரும்பினால் தங்கம்.. ரோடு முடிந்த உடனே க்ராஸ் செய்தால் கனரா பாங்க்..அதற்கப்புறம் உள்ள ரோட் தான் டிவிஎஸ் பின்புறம். வ்ரும் டாக்டர் சுப்ப ராமன் க்ளினிக் (ஹோட்டல் சுப்ரீம் எனப் பின்னால் வந்த ரோடா?) அப்படியே நேரே சென்றால்முனையில் காலேஜ் ஹவுஸ் வரும் சரியா?

வ்டுகக் காவல் கூடத் தெருவும் நினைவுக்கு வருகிறது.. தானப்ப முதலி தெரு..எவ்ளோ டைம் அந்தவழியாய்ப்போயிருக்கிறேன்.. அங்கே உள்ள பாண்டியன் மினி சூப்பர் மார்க்கெட் (இப்போதும் இருக்கிறதா) தான் எனக்கு அண்ணா முதன் முதல் ஸ்கூல் யூனிஃபார்மிற்காக மெரூன் காட்டன் பேண்ட் எடுத்துக் கொடுத்தான்..பாண்டியன் சூப்பர் மார்க்கெட்டிலிருது நேர் போய் (வளைந்து நேர் சென்றால் பூமார்க்கெட் ரோடு வரும் (சரியாங்க.. கொஞ்சம் புல் புல் அரிக்குது..ஏதாவது மாற்றம் வந்திருந்தால் சொல்லுங்க)) லெஃப்ட் போனால் சென் ட்ரல்.. அப்படிப் போவதற்கு முன் ஒரு கல்யாணமண்டபம் இருந்தது..அங்கு ஒரு சகோதரியின் கல்யாணம் நடந்தது.. பின் அதுவே மாடர்ன் ரெஸ்டாரெண்ட் டின்மெஸ் ஆக மாறியது என நினைக்கிறேன்..சாப்பாடு பிரமாதமாய் இருக்கும்..

ஜெய்ஹிந்த் புரம் முருகன் ஒரே ஒரு தபா போயிருக்கிறேன்.. பார்த்தால் பசிதீரும்..படம்.. அப்புறம் வில்லாபுரம்தியேட்டர்ஸ் விட்டுடுத்து..(வரலாறு முக்கியம் அமைச்சரே!: )

மது ஏசி ஆரம்பித்த போது பார்த்திருக்கிறேன்..சின்ன வீடு அங்குதான் ரிலீஸ் ஆன நினைவு (பிற்காலத்தில் இதுவும் கெட்ட தியேட்டராக மாறிய (படம் ஓட்டும்) நினைவு.) அப்புறம்.. கொஞ்சம் மூணு கிலோமீட்டர் டிராவல் பண்ணினால் பத்மா என ஒரு தியேட்டர் (சரியா).. அங்கு தான் ஊமை விழிகள் பார்த்தேன்..
