Gemini Ganesan's birth day Nov 17th.

திரையில் கதாநாயகியைக் காதலிப்பதில் எம்.ஜி.ஆர். கைதேர்ந்தவராக இருந்தார். பிறகு மெல்ல மெல்ல வளர்ந்து வாள் சண்டை, குஸ்தி என ஆக்*ஷன் காட்சிகளில் அதிகம் ரசிக்கப்படும் நாயகனாக உருப்பெற்றார். சிவாஜியோ உணர்ச்சிகரமான நடிப்புக்காக உச்சிமுகரப்பட்டார். இந்த இரண்டு ஜாம்பவான் நாயகர்கள் ஜம்மென்று தங்கள் ராஜபாட்டையில் பயணித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தபோது உருகும் காதலனாக, நொறுங்கிய கணவனாக உள்ளே நுழைந்தவர்தான் ஜெமினி கணேசன். இந்தியாவின் மிக உயரிய விருந்தான பத்மஸ்ரீயைத் தன் புகழின் உச்சியிலேயே (1971) பெற்றுக்கொண்டவர் ‘காதல் மன்னன்’.

சுதந்திர வேட்கை சுள்ளென்று சூடு பறந்த 40களில் மதுரையும் தஞ்சையும் நூற்றுக்கணக்கான கலைஞர்களைத் தமிழ் சினிமாவுக்குக் கொடுக்க, ஜெமினி கணேசன் வந்ததோ, தஞ்சை – மதுரை கலாச்சாரங்கள் சங்கமித்த புதுக்கோட்டையிலிருந்து. ஜெமினியின் இயற்பெயர் ராமசாமி கணேசன். நடுத்தர வர்க்க பிராமணக் குடும்பத்தில் பிறந்த ஜெமினி கணேசன் சொந்த ஊரில் பள்ளிக் கல்வியை முடித்துவிட்டுப் பட்டப் படிப்புக்காக மதராஸப் பட்டணம் வந்தார். சென்னையில் உள்ள தாம்பரம் கிறிஸ்தவக் கல்லூரியில் இளங்கலை அறிவியல் பட்டப் படிப்பில் இடம் கிடைத்தபோது அவருக்குப் பதினாறு வயது. விளையாட்டு, பேச்சு, பாட்டு எனப் பல திறமைகள் கொண்ட மாணவராக இருந்ததால், அங்கே பாதிரியார்களின் கவனதுக்குரிய செல்லப்பிள்ளையாக இருந்தார் ஜெமினி. படிப்பு முடிந்ததும் அங்கேயே சில மாதங்கள் பயிற்சி ஆசிரியராக வேலை செய்தார். ஏனோ ஆசிரியர் பணி அவருக்குப் பிடிக்கவில்லை. அப்போதுதான் ஜெமினி ஸ்டூடியோ அதிபர் எஸ்.எஸ். வாசனைச் சென்று சந்திக்கும்படி சிபாரிசுக் கடுதாசு ஒன்று வீட்டிலிருந்து தபாலில் வந்து சேர்கிறது. கடுதாசியை வாங்கிப் பார்த்த வாசன் வாஞ்சையுடன் அவரை கேஸ்டிங் உதவியாளராக நியமிக்கிறார். 1940-ல் ஜெமினியில் பணியில் சேர்ந்த ஜெமினி கணேசன் அதன் பிறகு ஸ்டூடியோவின் எல்லாத் தளங்களிலும் சுதந்திரமாக உலா வந்தார்.

‘முதலாளியின் உறவுக்காரப் பையன்’ என்ற அடைமொழியோடு வலம் வந்தவரைத் தன் கேமரா கண்களால் பார்த்தவர் ஜெமினி ஸ்டுடியோவின் தயாரிப்பு நிர்வாகிகளுள் ஒருவராக இருந்த ஆர். ராம்நாத்.

தயாரிப்பு நிர்வாகியாக மட்டுமல்லாமல், திரைக்கதை எழுத்தாளர், இயக்குநர் எனப் புகழ்பெற்ற ராம்நாத், மிஸ் மாலினி என்னும் படத்தில் கதாநாயகனின் உதவியாளராக ஜெமினி கணேசனை அறிமுகப்படுத்தினார். இப்படத்தின் கதை, பிரபல எழுத்தாளர் ஆர்.கே.நாராயணனுடையது. இப்படத்தைக் கொத்தமங்கலம் சுப்பு இயக்கிக் கதாநாயகனாகவும் நடித்திருந்தார். சுதந்திர இந்தியாவில் வெளியான முதல் சமூகப் படமான மிஸ் மாலினி 1947 செப்டம்பர் 26-ம் தேதி வெளியாகி, தரமான படம் என்ற பாராட்டைப் பெற்று வெற்றிபெற்றது. ஜெமினி நிறுவனத்துக்காக ராம்நாத் தயாரித்த ஜெமினி கணேசனின் அறிமுகப் படத்தில் பங்குபெற்ற கலைஞர்களின் பெயர்களோடு ஜெமினியின் இயற்பெயரான ராமசாமி கணேசன் என்பதன் சுருக்கமாக ‘ஆர்.ஜி’என்று டைட்டிலில் போடப்பட்டது.

காதல் மன்னன் பிறந்தார்

இதன் பிறகு ஜெமினி நிறுவனம் தயாரித்த பல படங்களில் சிறு சிறு வேடங்களில் நடித்துவந்தவருக்கு, 1952-ம் ஆண்டு கே. ராம்நாத் மறுபடியும் முக்கியத்துவம் கொடுக்கிறார். ராம்நாத் இயக்கத்தில் 1952-ல் வெளிவந்த ‘தாய் உள்ளம்’ திரைப்படத்தில் ஆர். எஸ். மனோகர் கதாநாயகனாவும், எம். வி. ராஜம்மா கதாநாயகியாகவும் நடிக்க, அழகான இளம் வில்லன் வேடத்தில் ஜெமினி கணேசன் நடித்தார். அது பெரிய வெற்றியைப் பெறவில்லை என்றாலும் விருது பெறத்தக்க சிறந்த படமாகப் பெயர் பெற்றது. இதில் கவனிக்க வேண்டிய விஷயம் என்னவென்றால், இத்திரைப்படத்தில் கதாநாயகனாக நடித்த ஆர். எஸ். மனோகர், பிற்காலத்தில் வில்லன் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் புகழ்பெற்றார். இதற்கு நேர்மாறாக வில்லனாக நடித்த ஜெமினி கணேசன் காதல் கதாநாயகனாக வலம் வர ஆரம்பித்தார்.

ஜெமினியின் தொடக்க காலத் திரைப் பயணத்தில் மிகப் பெரிய திருப்புமுனையை அமைத்துக் கொடுத்த படம், அடுத்த ஆண்டே வெளியான ‘மனம்போல மாங்கல்யம்’. முப்பத்து மூன்று வயதே நிரம்பியிருந்த ஜெமினி கணேசன் கவனம்பெறத் தொடங்கிய நான்காவது படத்திலேயே அவருக்கு இரட்டை வேடம் கிடைத்தது ஓர் அசாதாரணமான வாய்ப்பு. அந்நாள் தெலுங்குத் திரையுலகின் திரைக்கதை மன்னன் என்று போற்றப்பட்ட ‘வேம்பட்டி’ சதாசிவ பிரம்மம் எழுதிய முழுநீள சமூக நகைச்சுவை திரைக்கதையைத் தமிழில் எழுதியவர் உமாசந்திரன். ஒரே தோற்றம் கொண்ட இருவரில் தன் காதலன் யார் எனத் தெரியாமல் பழகுகிறார் கதாநாயகி. அந்த இருவரில் ஒருவர் மனநலக் காப்பகத்திலிருந்து தப்பித்து வந்தவர். கதை எத்தனை கலாட்டாவாக இருந்திருக்கும் என்று யோசிக்க முடிகிறது அல்லவா? இந்தப் படத்தில் நடிப்பில் மட்டுமல்ல, காதல் காட்சிகளிலும் தன் தனித்த மென்னுணர்ச்சி முத்திரையை அழுத்தமாகப் பதித்தார் ஜெமினி கணேசன். இந்தப் படத்தில்தான் ஜெமினி கணேசன் என்று முதன்முதலாக டைட்டில் போடப்பட்டது. படம் மிகப் பெரிய வெற்றிபெற்று ஜெமினியைக் காதல் மன்னனாக உயர்த்தியது. ஜெமினியின் சொந்த வாழ்க்கையிலும் மிகப் பெரிய பங்காற்றியது. இந்தப் படத்தில் சாவித்திரியுடன் நடித்தபோது ஏற்பட்ட நட்பே பின்னர் மெல்ல மெல்ல காதலாகக் கனிந்து திருமணம் வரை வந்து நின்றது. பாசமலரில் இந்த ஜோடி காதலித்தபோது அது நிஜமென்றே ரசிகர்கள் நம்பினார்கள்.

இந்தப் படத்தின் வெற்றியைத் தொடர்ந்து காதல், குடும்பம், சமூகம், சரித்திரம், வீரம் எனத் தான் ஏற்று மிளிராத கதாபாத்திரம் இல்லை என்று சாதித்துக் காட்டினார். ஜெமினியைக் காதல் மன்னனாகப் பார்க்கும் ரசிகர்கள் சிவபெருமான் வேடம் ஏற்ற அந்நாளின் கதாநாயர்களில் ஜெமினிக்கே அது கச்சிதமாகப் பொருந்தியதாகச் சொல்கிறார்கள். ஜெமினி இறுதிவரை இயக்குநர்கள் விரும்பும் நடிகராக இருந்தார். காரணம் தனது நடிப்புப் பொறுப்பை இயக்குநர்களிடம் விட்டுவிடுவார். இயக்குநர் சிகரம் கே. பாலச்சந்தர் இயக்கத்தில் ஜெமினி நடித்த ‘வெள்ளி விழா’படத்தில் முதுமை பற்றி ‘வந்தால் வரட்டும் முதுமை உனக்கென்ன குறைச்சல்,’ என்ற பாடலை எழுதியிருப்பார் வாலி. ஆனால் பழுத்த முதுமையில் இயற்கையுடன் கலந்த ஜெமினி கணேசன் இன்றும் இளமையான ‘ காதல் மன்னனாகவே’ ரசிகர்களின் மனதில் படிந்திருக்கிறார். அதற்கு அவரது நடிப்பாளுமையை மீறிய மற்றொரு காரணமும் உண்டு. தமிழ்த் திரையிசையின் மறக்க முடியாத கலைஞர்களாக இருக்கும் ஏ.எம். ராஜா, பி.பி. ஸ்ரீநிவாஸ் ஆகிய இருவரது குரலும் ஜெமினியின் குரலாகவே தமிழ் ரசிர்கள் மனதில் பதிந்துவிட்டதுதான் அந்தக் காரணம்.

Dear gKsir. thanks for posting this article at the right time. Though I have reservations of opinion with the starting line of this article that is unwarranted, I thank the author for writing this in memory of GG. There is no second opinion about MGR's swashbuckling hero in the mould of Robin Hood. But Love is not his forte, as it has been defined onscreen by the suave and softy image of GG only. There are lot of differences between GG's approach of a decent depiction of the lovers' closeness and the way others do that from the point of view of commercial ingredient. The triumvirate or the trinity of Tamil Cinema NT, GG and MGR all have distinct traits in their own way. NT for versatility of acting, MGR for his do-gooder image and GG for his King of Romance title, that remains unshattered for ever!











Many more such song sequences have clearly established GG as the one and only King of Romace as far Tamil Cinema is concerned. NT had also praised GG's maintenance of that title even in Kamal's cult classic Avvai Shanmugi :

மாயா பஜார் : (1957) கல்யாண சமையல் சாதம் காய்கறிகளும் பிரமாதம் !
Mayabazar was a 1957 Indian epic-mythological bilingual film, primarily made in Telugu and released in Andhra Pradesh on 27 March 1957, the Tamil version was released a month later in Tamil Nadu. The Telugu version was later dubbed into Kannada. The story, dialogues, and song lyrics (in Telugu) were written by Pingali Nagendra Rao. Both the versions were produced by Bommireddy Nagi Reddy. Considered as one of the enduring classics of Indian Cinema, The film was featured at the 1957 International Film Festival of India and Indonesian Film Festival. CNN IBN listed the film as the greatest Indian film of all time. The film has received the Filmfare Award for Best Film - Telugu.

The film is touted as a landmark in Indian film's cinematography, art direction and visual effects with the technology available at the time.The music delivered by Saluri Rajeswara Rao (uncredited) and Ghantasala has been extremely popular. During the Pandava Aranyavasa (period of disguised exile), Arjuna sends his wife Subhadra (Rushyendramani) and their sonAbhimanyu (A. Nageswara Rao/Gemini Ganesan) to Dwaraka to stay at her maternal home with her brothers, Krishna (N. T. Rama Rao) and Balarama (Gummadi Venkateswara Rao/D. Balasubramaniam). Sasirekha (Savithri), Balarama's daughter andAbhimanyu are deeply in love, apart from that at the time of Sasirekha's birth Balarama would have promised to marry her to Abhimanyu when they grow up.
However, Balarama's wife Revathi (Chaya Devi/C. K. Saraswathi) refuses to honour that commitment, as the Pandavas lose their kingdom and wealth in a gamble with Kauravas and are sent to exile. Balarama instead, on the face of Shakuni's (C. S. R. Anjaneyulu/M. N. Nambiar) and the Kauravas' cunning persuasion, decides to marry Sasirekha to Lakshmana Kumara (Relangi Venkata Ramaiah/K. A. Thangavelu), who is the son of his favourite disciple, Duryodhana (Mukkamala/R. Balasubramaniam). Krishna advises Subhadra and Abhimanyu to approach Ghatotkacha (S. V. Ranga Rao). Initially, Ghatotkacha assumes them to be intruders in his forest and attacks them, but later apologizes for his misunderstanding. When Subhadra narrates about what happened of her son and Sasirekha, Ghatotkacha decides to play some trickery in Dwaraka. He first, with the knowledge of Krishna and a servant girl, flies the sleeping Sasirekha along with her bed, from Dwaraka to his forest.
Next, using his magical powers, he assumes the form of Sasirekha (Ghatotkacha becomes Maya Sasirekha) and goes back to Dwaraka and wrecks her wedding with Lakshmana Kumara. He also performs a few practical jokes and comical acts while in disguise. His retinues act as wedding planners and provide comic relief as well. To further break-up the wedding, Ghatotkacha's follower's (Ramana Reddy- Played a magician role) enter the Bridegroom's guest house (Vididi griha) and draws hilarious comedy to the audience with Balaiah and Allu Rama Lingaiah. They also create a magical market(Mayabazar) in Dwaraka to gift the Kauravas and their relatives who come to the marriage with valuable gifts. Meanwhile, back in the forest, the real Sasirekha is married to Abhimanyu. When all goes to plan, Ghatothkacha reveals his true identity and further unveils the true colours of Shakuni and Kauravas. At this point, Sasirekha's parents accept her wedding and bless the newlyweds back at the forest.
(The film was digitally remastered to add colour and was released to the theaters on January 30, 2010. As many as 165 artists from Goldstone Technologies have worked to transform the film into the colour version. As per the company's head Jagan Mohan, they have used around 16.7 million colour shades for the transformation. The colorized version completed 100 days of screening in Prasads Multiplex theatre,Hyderabad.)
