Kollywood created a new record by releasing as many as 212 films in the year which draws to a close tomorrow. Even last Friday, we had four films including Arya-Hansika’sMeaghamann hitting the screens. Except for Kamal Haasan, Simbu and Vikram, all major actors had at least one of their films releasing this year. Let’s now have a look at the top five heroes of 2014.
Rajinikanth: As always, superstar Rajinikanth emerges on top. Rajini had two releases this year: one was Kochadaiiyaan, the country’s first-ever 3-D animation film made at Rs.125 crore. It did very well in Tamil but not so well in other languages. Lingaa, which was Rajini’s second release, got mixed reviews but has been going great guns in theatres. It collected Rs.140 crores in its first three days and despite the films which released around Christmas, Lingaa is motoring ahead.
Ajith: Thala Ajith had his Veeram releasing on Pongal in January and was pleasing to watch for his fans as well as movie-goers. It had a typically grand opening one has come to watch in Ajith’s films. Though it wasn’t a super-duper hit, it can be termed as a ‘hit’.
Vijay: Ilayathalapathy Vijay had a mixed bag this year as he had two releases: Jilla and Kaththi. Jilla released with Ajith’s Veeram during Pongal but ran for 100 days only in Baby Albert in Chennai that too only for the matinee show. The producer has acknowledged that the returns were not what he had anticipated. Kaththi, Vijay’s second film of the year directed by A.R. Murugadoss, was dogged by controversies but the makers again claimed that the film had collected more than Rs.100 crore, a claim not agreed to by many trade pundits.
Dhanush starred in one of the biggest hits of the year in the form of Velai Iilla Pattathari(VIP), which was also the debut film as director for famed cinematographer Velraj. The film, which had catchy tunes by Anirudh, catapulted Dhanush once again into the top bracket after his string of failures in Tamil in the past few years.
Sivakarthikeyan may not have been able to repeat his super-success of last year’sVaruthapadatha Valibar Sangam when his Maan Karate released early this year. Yet, it was neither a super-hit nor a failure either. It also steadied Sivakarthikeyan’s career graph, making him one of the five successful heroes of the year.
