Just saw uttamavillan...
The thing that amazed me most about the movie is its depth. We have stories within story and a story within that and the layers keep on growing. Only Kamal can deliver such a movie that offers so much potential to think through. The first thing I liked is the realistic portrayal of a superstar’s life and the people around him. Kamal has strengthened each of the character with a clear definition of their attitudes, values and motivations which makes every character memorable.
Two scenes that really touched me are "When kamal opens up his health condition to balachander and his family members. Those scenes have intense emotions and some terrific performances which conveyed the depth beautifully.”
I think following is the message kamal wanted to convey.
We have a character Manorajan whose intentions are pure(Uttaman) but his actions appear as bad(villan) to the people surrounding him. To express himself and to comfort them with his demise, he attempts to make a 4th century movie that reflects his own life with immortality as its theme.
Initially Manorajan is a actor with passion for art and you have a character uttaman who lives happily by performing an art. Manorajan faces a threat in the form of his father in law and uttaman faces threat in the form of muttharasan. Both his father in law and muthurasan have negative qualities such as arrogance, self pride, possessiveness, longing for status etc., Out of survival instinct, manoranjan decides to oblige his father in law and Uttaman decides to act in order to save his life. Manoranjan prepares a fake letter in order to convince yamini’s daughter to unite his son and daughter. Here he again deceives people who trust him but his intentions are pure. In the 4th century episode, we get know that he was the king of neighbouring kingdom disguised himself as uttaman to kill the king. Here, again he has deceived the one’s like princess and minister who trusted him but his intentions are again pure.
We get to know the pure intentions of Manoranjan when he attempts to take care of everyone’s life after his death even his driver and assistant. In order to console his family, with so much of physical difficulties, he makes a movie with a perspective towards immortality. Though he is associated with different woman, there is no lust taking prominence over the relationship and its the true love that echoed everywhere.
To be precise, it’s close to an auto biography of a person ‘Manoranjan’ presented in a different style.
Beyond the movie, This is a great tribute what kamal has offered to KB.
Know something about everything and go deeper in one thing
