I am a fan of murder investigation documentaries like NNT, Solved etc where the context is set within the first 5 mins. So, I felt the first 20 mins can be trimmed to make it even more racier.
Th first 40 minutes are not only required to set up the plot and charecter, it is also very much needed for the later half of the film:
1. Kamal digging the pit for natural fertilizer
2. Kamal and Kalabavan Mani's tiffs in tea shop for several reasons.
3. Sequence of police station building and related cement storage in his godown
4. Sequence which tells kamal is always late to home as he is at office
You take out even one of these, the second half will have a plot hole. Its so tightly knit.
When we read a novel, high points of a novel come only in few pages - approaching a work of art needs some patience and little effort from the viewer.

Thank you Jeetu.
Lol.. I didn't carry a time watch. I just felt it could been shorter. Not a major complaint.

Some more...
5. Suyambulingam watches soft porn as well. That might be another factor contributing to his guilt. He probably will never be able to bring himself to watch one after the incident.
6. His well-known stingy nature, which he would use later to explain his keeping all the bills. Also to justify him not having a mobile.
7. Habeas Corpus reference to hint the character's learning from cinema and to make Tea shop owner tell that in interrogation, giving a turning point in IG's thought process
8. Pasamalar scene to hint the audience on sentimentality of the character, which would invariably feel the pain (even the enacted ones) of the other as his own. A sobbing mother and a helpless, sad father in front of him, he is definite to feel their pain and behave the way he did.
9. His tiffs with the constable, growing enmity and also to infuse suspicion when he stops doing that post the incident

Cant resist one more Mohanlal post, sorry.
Papanasam must be the first Lal remake that has matched or outshone the original. With the exception of Pandiayarajan & Sve.Sekar's Kadhanaayagan (NadodiKaathu in Malayalam), all previous attempts to remake Lal movies in Tamil or Hindi were disasters in my opinion. Chandramukhi and Muthu will be considered okay films, as long people have not seen the original Lal versions. Cheenu, Aaha and Kreedom were insults to Lal, I think.

"Rajinikanth sir really liked the story when he heard it. Jeethu felt he could add a different dimension to the film with his presence. But Rajini sir had issues with two scenes," a source told IANS.
There's good chance he might get another script for him as a link said with Rajini also looking to try something else ..
ungalukku theriyatha sources (athey source that told IANS) told .....ss rajamouli wanted rajni sir to do bahubali ..but sir denied ,now that its a hit , next there will be a film with rajni sir under rajmouli garu

Superb! Reading all this, one gets much more assured that its ONLY Kamal who is deservingly fit to remake Papanasam! Not just becos of the fine layers he added to the tamil version, but also that its only he as an actor who has his films stories well knit and connected throughout. Any small thing shown in initial parts of his films will never go waste. they will form the reason of some events happening in the later part of the film.
Not only that, its KH who always campaigns for less no of songs. and even if more songs, he will make sure they are part of narrative and not just songs for commercial heck. Even in UV, each and every song had a reason and was part of the narration. Likewise, original Drishyam itself had songs well blent to the movie and didnt stand out!
If Papanasam was a Gold Script by Jeethu, which is very rare status to attain, Kamal added layers and made it Platinum!!

Papanasam Rocking in TN and also in couple of overseas too in BO! Just see the tweets! Seems more shows in 2nd weekend in many places and Bahubali not able to touch Papanasam in most places!!``
https://twitter.com/KamalHaasanFans
And see that biased BO analysts like sridhar thollai not even uttering the real BO status of Papanasam and totally concentrating on other movies only. When a KH film is rocking in BO, he will never open his mouth to say that. Such a biased media

Papanasam again!
Why?
Because it's soooooooooo good!
Checked several cinemas here in Malaysia ...most are packed, and that's why had to go to different cinema than my normal one.
Super packed and for the second time after Dasavatharam) audience clapped at the end!
Shocking since its already 10 days.
Guess it's going to break all previous box office records!
