Answer : Varna ( Varnam,Vannam and Niram ). Varna generally refers to Color or Colour ). The word must have been drived from the native indian' original language. Accroding to the father of Indian nation that the caste system in India is based on the VARNA( Variation in the Skin Complextion ( White,Brown,Yellow,Tan,Whetish ,, Dusky ,Dark ,Black and so on )of the Indian people ) . Hope you could understand the meaning of Varna ?

maa mean big(ManAdu, 'Maa'valangkilli etc) and it also mean the Mango Tree(maAthOttam) and maa could also mean horse (like 'maa-vita-puram'), maathu mean peNn (Female) ini could mean 'sweet' or maybe it mean something else in the name 'maadhini.' The name could mean 'sweet like a Mango' and Maybe the 'maa' stand for 'maanthar' (humans).

Tamil synonym for that phrase is 'thanmanam'. Other equivalent phrase in english will collapse the intended use of this phrase and periyar.
"Kal thonri man thontra kalathay mun thonri mootha kudi"- a second century literature- means when before stone became sand in earth the tamil tribes were formulated
