The Municipal Elementary School, Yanaiadi, here the alma mater of late matinee idol and Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran, has risen up marvellously shedding its nature-ravaged bruises with a generous donation of Rs. 60 lakh by the State government.

Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district was where MGR spent a significant part of his childhood and as a boy he attended school here between 1922 and 1925. The townsmen used to fondly recall the association of MGR with the temple town through the ages as he rose in social prominence first through cinema and then in the political sphere to reach the pinnacle of State power in 1977. Over the years, the school lost its sheen due to the vagaries of nature and turned a pale shadow of its former self, resulting in its alumni, the public and even the AIADMK cadres petitioning the State government to take efforts and restore the school.

The Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department sanctioned Rs. 60 lakh to spruce up the school. With the funds made available, the Kumbakonam Municipality, under whose control the school is functioning, readied a new building and Chairperson Rathna Sekar declared it open that has quite a lot of modern facilities, including stainless steel desks and chairs, blackboards and other pupil-friendly utilities to rival private educational institutions. The guests who attended the opening ceremony garlanded a life-sized MGR statue on the campus and recalled the town’s association with the leader.

பல்வேறு பட்ட எதிர்ப்புகளையெல்லாம் துணிந்து எதிர்த்து நின்று வாழ்க்கையில் வெற்றிக் கொடி நாட்டியவர் எம்ஜீஆர்.
அவரது வாழ்க்கை நம்பிக்கையிழந்து, சோர்ந்து கிடக்கும் உள்ளங்களுக்கெல்லாம் உற்சாகத்தை, நம்பிக்கையினைக் கொடுக்குமொரு நூல்.
அவரது திரைப்படப் பாடல்களும், படங்களும் மீண்டும் மீண்டும் வாழ்க்கைக்கு நம்பிக்கையூட்டக் கூடிய தத்துவங்களையே வலியுறுத்தின.
அதனால்தான் அவை இன்றும் கேட்கும்பொழுது சோர்ந்து துவண்டு கிடக்கும் உள்ளங்களுக்கு ஒருவித உத்வேகத்தினை, உற்சாகத்தினைக் கொடுக்கின்றன.

ஆரம்பகாலத்தில் எத்தனையோ பல வருடங்கள் சென்னையில் அவரது கால்களே படாத இடமில்லை என்னுமளவுக்கு அலைந்து திரிய வைத்தது காலம். தயாரிப்பாளர்களெல்லாரும் அவரை ஆரம்பத்தில் பல்வேறு வழிகளில் ஏளனம் செய்து ஒதுக்கி வைத்தார்கள். துப்பாக்கிக் குண்டுகள் உடலைப் பதம் பார்த்தன. வாழ்வில் அவர் எதிர்கொண்ட சோதனைகள் கொஞ்சமல்ல. இளமையில் வறுமை அவரை வாட்டியது. துயரங்கள் ஒன்றன்மேல் ஒன்றாக அவரை ஆட்கொண்டன. முதல் மனைவி வறுமை காரணமாகக் கேரளாவில் இறந்த பொழுது அவர் அங்கு செல்வதற்கு முன்னரே அங்குள்ள வழக்கப்படி மனைவியின் இறுதிக் கிரியைகள் முடிந்து விட்டன.
வாழ்வில் அனைத்துச் சவால்களையும் உறுதியாக எதிர்கொண்டு வெற்றிக் கொடி நாட்டியவர் எம்ஜிஆர்.

இருந்தவரையில் சினிமா, அரசியல் இரண்டிலுமே தனிக்காட்டு இராஜாவாக இருந்து மறைந்தவர்

எம்ஜிஆர். இறந்து இருபதாண்டுகளைக் கடந்த நிலையிலும் அவரது ஆளுமை தமிழ் சினிமா மற்றும் அரசியல் ஆகியவற்றைப் பாதிப்பது ஆச்சரியமானதொன்றல்ல
