Good ones, again.
I also once heard a friend sing 'hum bewafa' and found it so moving (still remember it). Later he told me it's from Shaalimar which I had in fact seen but the song didn't make any impact then. I have similar experiences for some tamil songs also. Strange.

When we had been to mahabaleshwar for a picnic tour from our college, we were made to stay in cottages with just scenic nature around us. On a quiet night (around 12ish) 30 of us were sitting and chatting in groups.
one girl from a group, wanted to retire to bed hence got up from the gang and sang
"acha toh hum chaltE hain"
another immediately responded
"phir kab milogE?"
the song went on and on with different student singing different lines... and answers had from some one else.
The song always reminds me of my college gang, particularly that girl (who actually was my junior and not too close by acquainted enough )
achchha to ham chalate hain
phir kab miloge
jab tum kahoge
jumme raat ko
haan haan aadhi raat ko
kahaan?
vaheen jahaan koi aata jaata nahi
achchha to ham chalate hain ...
__
kisi ne dekha to nahi tumhen aate
nahi main aayi hoon chhupake chhupaake
der kar di badi
zara dekho to ghadi
uf o, meri to ghadi band hai
teri ye ada mujhe pasand hai
dekho baate vaaten kar lo jaldi jaldi
phir na kahana abhi aayi abhi chal di
to aao paas baithen pal do pal
aaj nahi kal
ye to ik bahaana hai
vaapas ghar bhi jaana hai
kitani jaldi ye din dhalate hain
haay! taata ...
achchha to ham chalate hain
phir kab miloge
jab tum kahoge
kal milo ya parason
parason naheen, narason
kahaan?
yaheen yahaan koi aata jaata nahi
achchha to ham chalate hain ...
__
uda hai kis liye tera rang gori
hamaari pakadi gayi hai bas chori
- achchhaa?
raam jaane kya ho ab
kaise hua ye gazab
mera aanchal jo zara dhal gaya
saari duniya ko pata chal gaya
kaise khelenge ab aankh micholi
leja aake mere ghar se meri doli
tere ghar vaale na kar de inkaar
sab hain taiyyaar, sab hain taiyyaar
sun le phir dil ki fariyaad
bas baaqi shaadi ke baad
piya dekho, diye jalate hain
achchha ...
achchha to ham chalate hain ...

Tu jo mere sur mein -2
Sur mila le, sang gaa le
To zindagi ho jaaye safal
Tu jo mere man ka -2
Ghar bana le, man laga le
To bandagi ho jaaye safal
Tu jo mere sur mein…
Chaandni raato mein, haath liye haatho mein
Chaandni raato mein, haath liye haatho mein
Doobe rahe ek doosre ki, ras bhari baato mein
Tu jo mere sang men -2
Muskura le, gunguna le
To zindagi ho jaaye safal
Tu jo mere man ka...
Tu jo mere sur mein...
Kyu ham bahaaro se, khushiya udhaar le
kyu ham bahaaro se, khushiya udhaar le
Kyu na milke ham khud hi apna jeewan sudhaar le
Tu jo mere path mein -2

The moment will arrive when you are comfortable with who you are, and what you are--when you don't feel the need to apologize for anything or to deny anything. To be comfortable in your own skin is the beginning of strength.

This movie was released when I was in school... I haven't seen the movie and I chanced upon this song only when I heard one of my Dad's friends sang this at a party... Invariably in every party he was asked to sing, he sang this song. He was in a transferrable job and may be this song meant so much to him as he was away from home most of the time... his voice and the way he sang this song made this song haunt me forever!
Ofcourse, now I am not in India and it means more to me now... another similar song is the one from DDLJ...
Hindi Song Title: chitti aayi hai chitti aayi hai
Hindi Movie/Album Name: Naam (1986)
Singer(s): Pankaj Udhas
Actors: Pankaj Udhas, Amrita Singh, Sanjay dutt, Nutan, Kumar Gaurav
Music Director: Laxmikant Pyarelal
Lyrics: Anand Bakshi
chithi aayi hai aayi haai chithi aayi hai
chithi aayi hai watan se chithi aayi hai
badE dinon ke baad ham bewatanOn ke paas,
watan ki mitti aayi hai, chithi aayi hai.
chithi aayi hai watan se chithi aayi hai...
upar mera naam likha hai, ander yeh paigaam likha hai
Oh pardes ko jaane wale, lout ke phir na aane waale
saat samunder paar gaya tu, hamko jinda maar gaya tu
Khoon ke rishtey tOd gaya tu, aankh mein aasoo chOd gaya tu,
kam khaatey hai kamm sotey hain, bahut hi jayada ham rotey hain.
Chithi aayi hai aayi hai.....
sooni ho gayin shehar ki galiyan, kaantey ban gaye baag ki kalian
kehte hain sawan ke jhooley bhool gaya tuu ham nahin bhooley
tere bin jabh aayi diwali, deep nahin dil jale hain khali
tere bin jabh aayi holi, pichkari se chooti goli
pippal soona panghat soona, ghar shamshan ka bana hai namoona
fasal kati aayi besakhi, tera aana reh gaya baki
Chithi aayi hai aayi hai chithi aayi hai...
Pehle jabh too khat likhta tha, kagaz main chehra dikhta tha
Band hua yeh mEl bhi abh tO , band huya yeh khEl bhi abh tO
Doli main jabh baitie behna rasta dekh rahe the naina
Main tO baap hoon mera kya hai, teri maa ka haal bura hai
Teri bibi karti hai sewa , surat se lagti hai meva.
Tuney paisa bahut kamaya , is paise ne des chudaya
Des paraya chouD ke aaja , panchi pinjra tord ke aaja -2
Aa ja umar bahut hai choti apne ghar main bhi hai roti.
chithi aayi hai ....
chithi aayi hai aayi hai chithi aayi hai
badE dinon ke baad ham bewatanOn ke paas,
Watan ki mitti aayi hai, chithi aayi hai aayi hai.
Bade dinon ke baad, watan ki mitti aayi hai.
Chithi aayi hai aayi hai aayi hai.

Anoushka,
I think this and 'chalte chalte' are two of the popular songs on most amatuer singers' list
What are other film hits of Pankaj Udhas?
