Yeithoa Ninaivugal - Memories of Another Day
Topic started by NOV (@ 202.184.134.10) on Fri Aug 28 23:02:05 EDT 1998.
This thread is a spin-off from Udhaya's thread to create an index of yearned-for songs.
I have a collection of cassettes running into hundreds, and there must be many of you out there who also have good collections. As new songs are produced, we tend to listen less to the older songs that used to fascinate us at one time. While this thread aims to re-create that feelings of yonder years, in the process we may even help one another to exchange/record some of our favourites.
In summary, if Udhaya's thread is to list the songs that you yearn for, this one is to list the songs that you already have, memories of which will surely bring back the smile to your face. )

I've had this idea to one day, list down all my cassette collection and store it permanently. DF member's passion on Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal, made me dig into my store and rekindle those memories. Most of my collection are songs dating from the late 70s to the late 80s - period when I was financially independent. Then, I got married....... )))
Let me begin with a superb album bearing the combo Aalulkkoru Aasai and Machchanai Paartheengalaa.
Aalukoru Aasai
The movie stars Muthuraman and Jaychitra and was released in the late 70s. Music is by Ilayaraja.
1. Manjal araikkumpoathu padi eiri paaththa machchaan is by Vani Jeyram and is an excellent folk number.
2. Kanakku parththu kaathal vanthathu is a lyrical experience by TMS.
3. Idhaya Mazhaiyil adds to the number.
Machchaanai Paatheengalaa
This one stars Sivakumar and Srideivi. The MD is not credited, but the music is very IR-ish.
1. Maampoovey, siru mainavey is a duet that MUST be in your collection. KJJ and SJ sing this beautiful song.
2. Maaman Muniyaandi aaththaa is a sexy folk song and is easily one of the every best of SJ. Her humming send shivers down my spine. A definite goodie.
The other songs are TMS' Desingu Rajan, Ada koorukkeitta pasangalaa & Engamma Maharasi
Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal
This album has been greatly discussed in the Creativity of Ilayaraja thread. It stars Pratap, with music of IR. Unforunately my cassette is very "scratchy".
1. Kaathal panpaadu by KJ Jesudass
2. En gaanam by Ilayaraja & Jency
3. Kanavil mithakkum by KJ Jesudass
4. Pazhaya soagangal by Ilayaraaja
5. Thendralida thoadanangal by Ilaayraaja

How many of you remember
Archanai Pookal
This was art-movie director, Balu Mahendra's creation.
I believe the stars were Archana and Banuchander.
The first song is an enchanting duet
Kaaveriyey kaaveriyey, while
Naduchaamam poayachu had lots of fans those days. S. Janaki did her wonders again in
Vazhimeil vizhiyaai.
Aavarang kaattukul Thevaramaa is the last song in this album.

I faield to mention Archanai Pookal is by IR> The album comes with another combo in
Ethanai Koanam Ethanai Paarvai
Rajaraman told me that the movie was not released.
This movie starred Suresh & Vadivukarasi (that's the cover!) and with great music by IR.
My all-time favourite song is from this movie
Alai paayuthei Kanna by KJJ and SJ. Eppadi vendumaanaalum pugazhalaam!
Enna vithiyaasam is the standard kindal song.
Vithaitha vithai is a marvelous pathos number.
The album also contains several Raagas, including Paahimaam

"Alai Paayuthei Kannaa.." (Ilaiyaraja/KJY-SJ) is one of my all-time favourites too. My only complaint is that the song is too short.

How can you???? Maampoovae is by KJ & PS (not SJ). Most of the movies you mentioned were released when I was in school and I was not financially independent then. So the only source was Radio (Vividh Bharathi , Radio Ceylon etc).
I remember vividly that Vividh Bharathi used to bore one to death with 'Engamma Maharasi' song (with all that loud thaarai, thappatai sounds).

I long for those obscure gems I used to hear on Radio Ceylon whenever I visited Madhurai. The following songs I would never have heard were it not for Radio Ceylon:
-Thangathaeroadum Azhaginilae Indha Raajaathi Koluvirundhaal (SPB,PS from Ragupathy Raghavan Rajaram)
-Vaadai Vaattudhu Oru Poarvai Kaetkudhu (IR from Sakkalaththi)
-Mazhai Tharumoa En Maegam (SPB from Manidharil Iththanai Nirangalaa)
-Theertha Karaiyinilae Shenbagap Pushpangalae (KJY? from Thaippongal)
-Naalu Pakkam Vaedarundu (SPB, PS from Annan Oru Kovil)
Hmmm adhellam oru kaalam!
