Sorry for missing those wonderful compositions I listen to MSV for the tune and melody alone, never getting into the instrumentation part While I listen to Raaja intricately even for finer nuances with instruments Probably i should change my listening pattern with MSV now! Since Iam getting brickbats from fans including Raaja himself asserting that MSV was a Giant

i dont have much experience with MSV or IR. but from a few concerts that i did where we played some MSV numbers and occasional listens. MSVs preludes and interludes are amazing (espeically the string section) and his melody is ofcourse TOP CLASS! sry for the dig

I saw Swades a few weeks back on TV and fell in love with the songs again. I don't know why but after 2000, the excitement factor wasn't there in ARR's Hindi albums until RDB. I enjoyed Rangeela, Daud, Kabhi Na Kabhi, Dil Se, DSKR, Taal, etc. Maybe it's because ARR was doing historical or period Hindi movies.
I kinda feel that the director wanted ARR to recreate Lagaan for Swades. Some songs have a similar feel in both movies:
Mitwa = Yeh Tara Woh Tara
Radha Kaise Na Jale/O Paalanhare = Pal Pal Hai Bhaari
O Rey Chori = Dekho Na/Saanwariya
Ghanan = Yun Hi Chala
ARR reused a track from Baba but I liked the smooth Hindi version of Dekho Na. The Stars song - Yeh Tara Woh Tara is good. Saanwariya is excellent. The lyrics, the interludes - perfect.
I think Swades won the background Filmfare award in 2005. It's a good soundtrack for the movie and of course the heroin was so beautiful in Saanwariya The songs pushed the movie forward and some songs were not shown fully which is good to get the movie going.

Also listen to Ullathil Nalla Ullam (Karnan) for a fantastic use of shehnai.
