Congratulations to all big fans of NT, this thread is growing, and growing, and will keep on growing.
Murali-sar..what can I say…you are the backbone to this thread and the reason I am participating in the hub (meaning NT is the core reason, of course).
One doubt- the director of Neethiyin Nizhal is Barathi Vasu. Is it Sandhana Barathi/P. Vasu combination?
PR…great book review. Wonder if we can get it here.

Rakesh, Murali and I are waiting for your take on Praptham. :P
Never argue with a fool or he will drag you down to his level and beat you at it through sheer experience!

One thing for sure, I am a kadanali for this thread…I owe many reviews (I can feel Murali-sar ‘s steely stare). So, on to a quick short one on Praptham.
It takes some really important events to drag me out of the bed on Sunday morning…and NOV just did that. He SMSed me about the screening of Praptham on TV, and warned me that it is not available in DVD. But credit goes to NT…because I saw this film only once and really loved it then (must be ten years ago).
Praptham is produced and directed by Savithiri. Or so says the credit. It could have been work of any hack of that time. No stamps or brands that would identify the first (and only?) time director.
The whole film could have avoided the resurrection theme and just move on with the love story. We get a contemporary couple, NT and Savithiri, and NT suddenly gets Deja-Vu (water scares him suddenly) and places, things reminds him of a past life. An unfulfilled past life as we learn later.
He meets his past through Chandrakala, now an old lady who vowed to die only in NT’s (of past) arm. She does so promptly (thank god, coz her old lady acting was terrible). We are then transported to past not too far. Logic and reasoning are thrown out, as we are not so sure which period the past is in…because there was still college and stuff.
Here, we have NT as boat owner, who earns living by transporting people with his boat…and one of his regular is College student Savithiri, hailing from a zameen family.
While he has fun and frollick with Chandrakala, he begins a confusing relationship with Savithiri. It was confusion as it starts from servant-like loyalty, to great care for Savithiri…and after tragedy befalls her, love.
Overall the film is patchy, I get the feeling that NT may have not been fully involved…only making him available now and then. There is comedy, but Nagesh didn’t deliver the goods this time. Both NT and Savithiri did great job, the latter not resorting to over-emoting during tragic moments. Despite the poor storytelling, NT’s performance do get you involved. You really feel for him (as you do most of the times anyway).
But the real hero of this film is the composer, M.S. Viswanathan. Santhanattil Nalla Vaasam Eduthu, Neettu Paritcha Roja and Taalaattu Paadi Thaayaaga Vendum are immortal pieces that more than enhances the viewing experience. The latter two are beautiful and yearning. Great writing, great music. Brilliant songs.
Praptham may not appeal to even some NT fans. But it is still a good film, with poor script, wonderful performance form the lead and most important of all, beautiful songs.
NOV, where is your review?
(Saraswathy Sabatham next, Murali-sar).

Yes. The same duo who did Panneer Pushpangal.
Nice review on Praptham. I thinks it's the remake of a Rajesh Khanna starrer.
PR, thanks for the book intro. I will sure try to get one.

Yes..Yes...how can I forget that. That too is a beautiful song. Thanks Kalnayak. (Somehow there is a strong KVM feeling to this song.)

Praptham's original is a Nageshwara Rao-Savithri starrer in Telugu, which was a super-hit. Murali will probably be able to supply the name and year, date etc of release
It was also remade in Hindi as Milan with Sunil Dutt and (meenakumari?)
Also, this thing about having jodi and not having jodi. It is a bit mean to say he shouldnt have a jodi . What matter is the movie is good or not. For example, Vaazhkai(with jodi and duet) is much better than Padikkatha Pannaiyar(without jodi!), isnt it?

Don’t getcha plum? Puriyala….who mentioned he shouldn’t have a jodi?
You are right, it’s the whole movie which is important. But I prefer Padikkatha Pannaiyar than Vazhkai . PP had more humour in it.
