Tamil Cinema's first Chapter consisted of actors
who also sang very well. The two great stars of
that chapter were MKTB and PU Chinnappa. In the
singing department MKTB was clearly the more popular
one among the masses. But, in acting, dialogues,
fights etc., PU Chinnappa was the better one. He
was probably the first to effectively do two, three,
and even ten roles in a single movie.
We have already collected lots of information
about MKTB, thanks to Manisekaran. Shall we do
the same for PU Chinnappa?

'Chandrakantha' (1936), I believe is the first
movie acted by PUC. He acted as a prince in that
movie. Though it was a success, several movies
acted by him soon after that were failures. The
movie, 'Uththama Puththiran' (1940) by Modern
Theatres gave him a lift again. (This movie was
remade later with Sivaji as the hero.) PUC acted
in dual roles (maaRupatta guNangaLai koNda
irattaiyargaL). Bharadhiyaarin senthamizh
naadennum pOdhinilE gaNeerendra PUC voice-il
indha padaththildhaan idam petradhu. sudhandhira
pOraattam soodu pidiththirundha vELaiyil ip paattum
padamum siRandha vetri petrana. Another big hit
that came soon after was 'Aryamaalaa' (1941) in
Patchiraja Films. aanandha roobiNiyE aariyamaalaa and
siva kirubaiyaal were two hit songs in that
movie. PUC acted in 10 different roles in that
movie and impressed the audience tremendously
as a great actor!
More later...

Hi!
namakkini bayamEdhu (rag : kalyani) was certainly a masterpiece, no doubt.
Some other songs of PUC that I can think of are :
1. kAdhal kanirasamE
2. nadaialangAram kaNdEn
3. ellOrum nallavarE, ulaginil
4. a big kathaakaalakshebam in the film Krishna Bakthi.
I will rake my brains to list more songs of PUC.
Regards
G.Ramaswamy

Apart from the song "namakkini bayamEdhu" which is based on the raga kalyAni, there are few more superhit songs of PUC, two of which i can recollect immediately are
1. Nadai alankAram KandEn - KaraharapriyA (superb)
2. Chandrodhayam idhilE - ShankarAbharanam
(i personally feel this is the greatest tamil shankarAbharanam song in its pure form that i ever listened to, though there are lots of songs based on that scale. (of course, another greatest song on the raga is the well-known superhit telugu movie shakarAbharanam and the song "OmkAranAdhAnu".

Though I have heard of PUC, I don't know anything about him. Waiting for Manisekaran's memoirs of PUC. Is he a contemporary of Kittappa? One song in a Paandiarajan movie goes like this:
KittappA andha kAlathula kAyadha kAnagatha
P.U.ChinnappA indha kAlathula kAdhal kani rasamE
manmadha leelai MKT kAlathula
...
...
So I think PUC must have come to cine field after KittappA and one of PUC's hits must be "kAdhal kani rasamE". Am I correct?

Your mention about kaathal kanirasamE song brings back my childhood memories. (Then in cylon radio, (very) old songs were played at 5:15 AM or so, and my father was an ardent fan of MKTB ad PUC). There is a line avaL kANakkidaikkAtha thangam.. that gets repeated couple of times in one of PUC's song. Is this line from kAthal kanirasamE song? Is this song from the film jagathala pradAban? Thanks for any info.

In 1942 PUC acted in Jupiter Pictures' kaNNagi. SV Venkatraman
was the MD and Udumalai Narayana Kavi wrote the lyrics. The lyrics
were very very good and the music was excellent. Several songs by PUC
became big hits:
anbil viLaindha amudhamE

But the song mentioned above, chandhrOdhayam idhilE was the most
special song in this movie. adhil isaiamaippaaLar SVV Shankarabharanam

The song, namakkini bayamEdhu in Kalyani raagam, it seems,
was made for the movie, Jegathala Pradhaaban (MD: GRamanathan).
But, it seems the song was never used for the movie.

The article that I have also talks about a movie, manOnmaNeeyam
(1942) acted by PUC and TRRajakumari. It seems the songs in that
movie were a feast in Classical music. I will write about them later.
