    RM,

'kannamma kathal ennum kavidhai solladi' from 'Vanna Vanna Pookal' is in this ragam, as is the last charanam of 'sanga tamizh kaviye' from 'Manadhil Urudhi Vendum'. (Thanks to my friend on twitter for this raga update)

    V_S,
I am also enjoying this song now. Not sure what other combinations of Jeyachandran Swarnalatha exist

    app_eng,
Yup. Shenoy does figure a lot in Raja's music and as Pandit Balesh says, Raja uses it in very innovative ways. So finally you are getting around to 'kizhakku mala' 'Katha Thudarunnu' is a superb album and is almost like a replica of 'Bhagyadevatha' with its three songs, with two emphasising melody and one melody+rhythm.

My main problem with that song was Karthik, may be the "over praise" for him in the hub has increased my aversion towards this "singing sitting inside a kiNaRu" artist...

    app,

I too think sometimes Karthik gets over praised.

Still listening to 'jal jal jal salangai'.

Suresh, thanks for all the lovely links.
Kudos to Solvanam folks for meticulously adding links to all the pieces in the Shenoy article (innum article padikkala )
The cello player's site also has a video of the team practising Sundari Kannaal for the Dubai concert. Though a brief one, its very interesting since its without the vocals, giving a clearer picture of the violin ensemble in the background. Beautiful.
And thanks for Jal jal; IR+JC combo is, almost, always brilliant and this one's no exception. Does this ragam have anything in common with Mouname nenjil naalum nee ezhudhum (from Urangaatha Ninaivukal) (and does MSV's Oru naal iravu from Kaviya thalaivi also belong to the same family?)

Wonderful article. but there is one small addition I want to give though.
Music directors MSV-TKR combo used shehnai in a novel way and Raaja has continued the tradition - so to speak of.
Classic case is the use of shehnai in "Padithaal mattum podhuma" songs, a film that I revisited this weekend.
"Ponnondru kanden" had wonderful shehnai interlude that was heavenly - appropriate for the light jovial mood of the song.
The Tribal dance song - Nallavan - enakku naane nallavan is the "cake taker". It is a very salilda type of song and has a fantastic "shehnai phase" in the interludes
that is fast, hip and lilting. I see similarities between Raaja's use of shehnai for upbeat situations and this use. absolutely fantastic...
Apparently, a democracy is a place where numerous elections are held at great cost without issues and with interchangeable candidates.

Super Jaunty Number Usha!! Really enjoyed Raja's Mallu Guitar!

First time hearing your Tamil Guitar song, nice playful pick...awww Kushboo's face is too precious )

Led me to another Captain flick "Enga Muthalali" songs

    • Kolli Malli with Mano and Swarnalatha...sounds different, slow, pining, but soft and calm, like immersed in mist and dew
    • "Kungumam Manjalukku" the more popular one but with due reason, KJ at his charming best. I get the feeling of a much mellower "Sundari Kannal Oru Seithi"
