Dear friends:
I am glad that I found this thread!
I have heard many songs of Purandara Dasa by the great Sri. BMK, in his melodious voice. I understand a few words since I know Tamil and Telugu
but it will be wonderful to know the full meaning of the beautiful compositions.
I hope some one can give me the lyrics and meaning of the following two songs.
(pardon me if the spelling is not correct)
"yarenu maduvaru"
"ninna magani galli "
thanks

Dear Mr. Jeeyar
Thanks for taking time to post the wonderful lyrics for the two songs.
I did't expect a reply so soon.
I look forward to the meanings also.
Of course , I enjoyed the songs with the lyrics; but nothing can be
compared to knowing the full meaning and enjoying the bakthi rasam fully !

ICM-Kannada- Meaning of the song ArEnu mADuvaru and ninna magana gALi Ganavamma
Shri Purandaradasaru had enormous knowledge of Kannada language.
He knows to play with the words having perfect meaning while writing lyrics.
Example: In the first song ‘ArEnu mADuvaru’
He uses ‘Aru’ is number Six in Kannada, but instead of ‘yAru’ (means-who)
Like wise ‘AriMda’ instead of ‘yAriMda’ (means by whom)
Hasivaritu – too hungry (hungry person knows the agony)
rasadAleya kabbu – Well grown Sugarcane
melaleMdu – to eat/chew
manavaritu naDeyada – not understaning a person properly
naDevudake kAlilla - though legs are there, there is no strength to walk
In the song ‘ninna magana gALi’
He uses gALi means Air; Wind (wild), evil spirit (devva in kannada, which gives unwanted hardships)
Ganavamma – enormous or too much
kAlu taMdu – brought his legs (how can it be?) means child’s walking
kElinoLage – into the huge brass/copper vessel
kollahOdare – to hit a person until he dies
tuLiyalIta – steps/walk onto the streets/lanes
kEri basava – A bull which carrys idol of God/Godess of the village during fairs/jaatra
This bull is let free to run around in the village, when ever it stands infront of a house, they should feed it.
Meaning of the song “ArEnu mADuvaru”:
who (Aru) can do (mADuvaru) what (Enu)?
what can happen by whom (AriMdalEnahudu)?
effect of one's deeds in previous birth (pUrvajanmada karma)
will run after(vidhi benna biDadu) him/her in present life
There is no body to offer food (uNabaDisuvavarilla) though
there are relatives (neMTaru) in the city/village (Urella)
when I go (hOdare) to reservoir (kere) with thirst (bAyAri),
it was dry/barren (battitu)
Krishna, seeing me at a distance (dUradalli nODi), in-laws
(tAyi sOdarareMdu - brothers of a mother)
will laugh (nagutAre) at me, if I go (hOdare) there with hopes (hAraisi)
If I go (hOdare) to relatives (neMTara) house (manage)
with hungry (hasidu) to get food (uNalikke)
there is no body (kANe) who can understand my agony (hasivaritu)
and protect (salahuvara) me
If I go (hOdare) to fields to eat/have (melaleMdu) juicy (rasadALe)
sungarcane (kabbu)
Krishna, It tastes (bAyige-tOrutide) me like a poison (viShavAgi)
Krishna, are you listening (kELO kRuShNa),
when I go (hOdare) under the tree (maradaDige) to have shelter (neraLu eMdu)
Tree got burnt (uridu) to become glowing (dhaga dhagane) coal (keMDagaLAdavu)
when I go (hOdare) to river (hariva nIreMdu) to fetch water (nA nIrkuDiya)
for my thirsty the river (tore) became dry (batti battalAyitu)
disliked (manake bArada) woman (heNNu) is like a creeper (baLLi)
grown (habbida) on the house (manege)
Friends/relatives (manuja saMga) who cannot under stand (naDeyada)
me properly (manavaritu)
Krishna, when I trust (enage nI gatiyeMdu dhRuDavAgi naMbiralu) you so much,
is it fair for you to desert (kai biDuvare) me in the middle of sea (naDu nIrinoLu)
Not having strength to walk (naDevudake kAlilla),
don't have money (dhanavilla) to give/donate (koDuvudake)
toungue (nAlige) lost (haraNava duMbitu) its capabality to speak (nuDiva)
Hey Man (mind-manave), be happy (suKiyAgu) by trusting (nerenaMbi) the feet (caraNavanu)
of Shri Purandara vittala, who is the only hope for poor/destitute (baDavarAdhAri)
Meaning of the song “ninna magana gALi Ganavamma”:
Gopi (gOpamma), the troubles/hardship (gALi) created by
your (ninna) son (managana) is too much (Ganavamma)
Please call (karedu) Ranga (raMgage) and
teach him a lesson (buddi pELe)
He troubles (gALi) us too much (Ganavamma)
while warming (kAyuvalli) the milk (hAlu)
He put (addi) his feet (kAlu taMdu) in the vessel (kElinoLage)
and ran away (pOdanamma)
if we try to punish (kolla pOdare) him with a stick (kOla taMdu)
He ran away (ODipOdanamma) with child's playfulness (lIleyiMda)
He (ivana) troubles (gALi) too much (Ganavamma)
while churning (kaDevalli) milk for curds (mosaru)
He will snatch (uLiyagoDanamma) the butter (beNNe)
from child's (shishuvina) hand (kaiyalli)
Curd (mosaru) sellers (mAruvaru) are appealing (moreyiDuvaramma)
women (shashimuKiyaru) are complaining (dUruvaramma) like this (hIge)
If he comes (baralIta/tuLiyalIta) to streets (kEriyoLu) of village/city (UroLu)
He says (tAnaMte) that he is the Master (oDeya) of this World (IrELu lOkakke)
Gopamma, you made (mADi biTTeyamma) Him (dhIra puraMdara viThThalarAyana)
like a bull (basavana) on the streets/lanes (kEri)
