Raghu, if this is of any help, this is what I wrote after my maiden trip to TN in 2007...
The Tamilnadu I Saw
INTRODUCTION
I travelled to Tamilnadu (TN) on June 1st 07 and visited various parts of TN until the 8th of June. As this was my first ever visit to India, I had prepared myself for the trip with discussions among those with previous experience as well as through the internet.
India simply bowled me over. One person had told me that I would never visit India again; but now I am more eager to visit it over and over again. Some had warned me of stench, hygiene and cheats. Nothing could be further from the truth. I felt completely safe in TNagar at 11pm surrounded by human beings, not fearful gangsters.
India does several things to people; life will never be the same again for her visitors. India is not something to be read or heard. She must be experienced. To enjoy India, the first thing to do is to remove the attitude. Go with the flow and laugh off little inconveniences. You will be repaid multifold with what she has to offer.
The Tamilnadu I saw is completely different from what I had anticipated, right from the word go. I was overwhelmed and humbled at the same time. The land, its people, the sights, the sounds, the food, the culture, the humanity - I could go on and on. Above all, the abundance of love and sense of belonging.....
Never argue with a fool or he will drag you down to his level and beat you at it through sheer experience!

One should not miss staying in Kumbakonam and visiting temples in and around it. There are literally thousands of temples surrounding the town. Also other important places worth visiting like Chidambaram, Thanjavur are nearby. It is an awesome place . The Cholas had their capital at Thanjavur and they have built numerous magnificient temples , mostly dedicated to Lord Siva in these areas. Thiruvidaimaruthur (this temple is just beyond description. Absolute bliss) , Thirumananchery (built by Sembian Mahadevi, mother of Uttama Chola , predecessor to Raja Raja the great) , Darasuram , Patteswaram, Swamimalai, navagraha temples are some of the very famous temples nearby. Also the Kumbeswarar , Someswarar, Nageswarar ,,Kasi Viswanathar temples , are very much present in Kumbakonam itself.
