    If you visit Thiruvidaimarudhur act normal! That temple is supposed to cure mental illness. At times you will see people chained to the pillars. Don't be acared. To learn more read about 'Brahma hathi' !

    saravanabhavan is good and vegetarian. beware of the fact that unlike london most of the restaurants in Tamilnadu are non vegetarian. You have to be really careful if you want to have vegetarian food in Tamil nadu. Good luck with it.

    Here in USA too but as you said it is not compulsory. So we wear shirts when we go to temple and churches.
