Malarndhum malarAdha is a knockout punch. If you cannot become a NT fanatic after seeing this song, then as the Bard said, you are only fit for treasons and strategems. And such a lovely, soothing lullaby that gives the poignancy in just the right dose without going overboard despite the overwhelming melodrama of the movie, script and situation.
veLLai rOja was THE talk of the town when it released - atleast in and around my father's circles. There was a much bigger buzz on the movie over and above Superstar's thanga magan, which from my memory was just an average grosser and an average talk-generator-among-regular-public. I dont remember TMT being released on the same day - I do remember a few watches of TMT in (Dont rememberr Sathyam, Safire or Anand complex) a Box Seat long after it released.
Absoolutely loved the movie when watched first - nagooru pakkathula dance included. Rousing stuff from the Raja of Music, too.
White Rose became one of NT's most succesful 80's movies if I remember it right. Perhaps the most succesful one after Mudhal Mariyadhai.

Plum - List of 9 movies which were released on 4.11.1983 Deepavali day ....including Thoongathey..
1. Aboorva sagodarigal
2. Kaivarisai
3. Manaivi solle mandiram
4. Nenjodu nenjam Neeru pootha neruppu
5. Naalu perukku nandri
6. Thangaikkor geetham
7. Vellai roja
8. Thangamagan
9. Thoongathe thambi thoongathe
Vellai Roja, Theerpu and Neethipathi were NTs Superhits in 80s, like Mudhal mariyadhai
In fact, these 3 movies were received well in all three centers A, B and C, unlike Mudhal Mariyadhai which did not do well ( comparatively) in few centers.

Mahesh, I have no first-hand facts- just memories and perceptions being as I was only 12-13 years old at that time. Obviously you speak with checked facts and figures so no questioning your observations. I just rambled in recollection randomly in my previous post.
Thangaikkor Geetham was quite a rage, too. Teeyaar family's been torturing us non-stop since 1980.

Rajaram,
I believe you refer "ThangaMahan" run 250 days in Madurai Meenakshi paradise, if you are from Madurai then you should know the theatre capacity of Meenakshi paradise, where as VellaiRoja released in Madurai Central and Madurai Central capacity is 3 times of Madurai Meenakshi paradise, so get the fact ....
Cheers,
Sathish

Dear Friends,
Thanks for rekindling the fond memories of Vellai Roja, one of the very successful movies of NT during 1980s.
As we were sure of the success of Vellai Roja, I made advance booking for Vellai Roja, for about 10 tickets, in Udayam and took my parents, periamma, sister, brother and a few friends for the opening show at Udayam, it was one of those earliest movies got released in Udayam and was the first successful movie there (first movies - Sattam & Sivappu Sorriyan were average grossers during their release). I still remember the adulation NT received, especially, in the introduction scene of NT in the Inspector role, the way he emotes after seeing his brother, lying dead, after opening the coffin. As NT's role as a Father, was a bit soft one, he was almost subdued and Inspector role came as a joy, especially for us - his Fans. Interval followed immediately and the entire crowd was talking about that scene. The second half of the movie was racy. The success of the movie can be attributed to NT, tight screenplay, Prabhu's good performance and Ilaiyaraja's excellent music.
I am not sure, whether Thoongadhe Thambi Thoongadhe was released along with Vellai Roja, Thanga Magan and Thangaikkor Geetham (notoriously remembered for wasting Sivakumar in an insignificant role!). Here, Vellai Roja was a winner by miles closely followed by TR's movie and Thanga Magan.
This is not the first time, NT came trumps when his movies were released along with the socalled young brigade. NT did it in 1981 when Keezhvanam Sivakkum was released along with Andha 7 Naatkal, Thanneer Thanneer and Ranuva Veeran where KS was the clear winner. Already, elaborate details were given by experts Mr. Murali and Mr. Pammalar.
For NT, winning and keep winning is a habit, which he continues even now!
Regards,
R. Parthasarathy

Goldstar,
Abhinaya is referring to Thoongadhe Thambi Thoongadhe and not Thanga Magan.
