Kalthun benefits from seniors, and totally let down by the younger actors. NT as usual is the rock pillar of the movie Oh, MSV pinni pedaleduthirupparu. Just listen to Valartha Keda song, your blood will boil, your eyes will tear.

I too felt that 'younger' actors of better caliber (like Vijayakumar & Sarathbabu of Theerpu) would have done more justice to the roles in Kalthun. Same is the case with Nallathoru kudumbam & Rishimoolam.

Agreed Mr. Mahesh. This guy performance is very bad and his facial expression is very bad as well. I believe Vijayakumar would have done better....

Mahesh sir, how was the initial few days in Chennai on release time?

    Cheers,
    Sathish

I couldn't control my laughter when I read koodai thalaiyan Chakravarthy.

The original drama by (late) Seshadri, penned by Director Mahendran, was a big hit those days and used to be aired through AIR. Most of the family members in a home, would sit and listen to most of the dramas between 9.15 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. every day, leaving aside all their jobs and plan accordingly to listen to the dramas without fail. As for "Rishimoolam", like Chithi, Kolangal TV serials, people were listening to this Amateur Drama through radio, like mad. In the Drama, the son's character was a big hit - I don't remember who played it in Drama. The central characters in the Drama were that of Mother and Son and the Father role was played by NT in the Movie. With his usual humility, NT played the role which has lesser significance and as usual, came up trumps! The spoiler is of course that Chakravarthy (again unable to control my laughter).

The name of the other gentleman is Thilak, later known to be called as Kalthoon Thilak, as if he performed excellently, to get that tag. He was one of the lead artistes in Major Sundararajan's dramas and obviously given a chance, to repeat the role he essayed in the original Stage Drama because it's Major's Drama, which was also directed by him - first directorial venture, of course. As usual, this person also spoilt the role, the major reason being - INABILITY TO ADAPT TO CHANGE IN REQUIREMENT BETWEEN DRAMA & CINEMA. And that is the chief reason for Nadigar Thilagam's enduring success - even today - that he was able to adapt himself to the change in the environment, continuously, scrupulously!

Casting is very important for a film. Rishimoolam along with Kalthoon proved that wrong casting came in the way of making them big hits. However, due to outstanding performance and shoudering the entire movie on his shoulders, NT made them successful 100 day movies, if not Silver Jubilee Hits. Many other films can also be quoted in this regard.

    Regards,

    R. Parthasarathy

Mahesh, thanks for the tidbits. Ah yes kalthUN Thilakji(dont forget the surreptious, respectful -ji he added as a postscript to his name!)

The man gives me the creeps even when I catch him in passing in afternoon TV serials
