Academy may sue Ismail Darbar for Rahman slur
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has been contemplating to press defamation charges against Indian composer Ismail Darbar for alleging that fellow composer A.R. Rahman had "bought" his Oscar award.
According to sources, the AMPAS was contemplating to sue Darbar for $50 million.
Darbar had last month started the controversy accusing the internationally acclaimed film composer of unofficially buying the Oscar awards as he did not deserve it. According to Darbar, Rahman bagged two Oscars in 2008 -- "Best Original Score" and "Best Original Song" -- for his music in Slumdog Millionaire by bribing the AMPAS officials.
Though Rahman had denied the charge, he had ruled out any legal action against Darbar for his defamatory allegation.
Meanwhile, despite the AMPAS's strong reaction over his allegation, Darbar appeared unfazed. In an interview to a leading daily, he said: "I am not aware of any such legal notice from the Academy. I will react if and when I receive it."

Will Kathir get A R Rahman to score music?
Here’s good news for music lovers and fans of Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman.
Sources say that the maestro has, after an interval, agreed to compose again for Tamil cinema. The film is titled Kodai Vidumurai (Summer Holidays). Directed by Kathir, the movie went on the floors recently.
Kathir, who returns to filmmaking after a huge hiatus of nine years, shares a great rapport with the Grammy winner. Most of his previous flicks like Uzhavan, Kadhal Desam, Kadhalar Dhinam, Kadhal Virus were musical blockbusters and needless to add, ARR’s songs created a massive buzz at the time.
Kodai Vidumurai has Srikanth in the lead. The actor was conspicuous by his absence at the launch.
Later he told DC that he was stuck at Shankar’s Nanban shooting outside the city. Several filmmakers from K’town like Cheran, Ameer, Mysshkin, Sasi, Vetri Maaran, Vikraman, RV Udhayakumar, SP Jananathan and Durai were present to greet their peer and wish him well on his return.
Vivek, Vijayakumar and his actress-wife Manjula, RB Choudhary among others were also present on the occasion. Speaking at the event, Kathir said the film would be a musical entertainer, but kept the composer’s name under wraps.
It was ace lyricist Vaali who let the cat out of the bag by saying the little genius AR Rahman would join hands with Kathir for the fifth time! Vel Raj will handle the camera and Thotta Tharani is the art director.
