On this pure "original" thing. How do we know for sure if somebody is 100% original, as against 70% original? Real life la (or some stage performer) yaraiyavadhu paathu influence airukka mudiyaadha? Or more than one, for that matter?
Naama sirikkaroma, performance work aagudhaa illaya-ngaradhu dhaan matter.
Of course, i get Groucho's point - Vadivel Balaji-a rasikka mudiyaadhu (like i find Chaplin Chellappa unfunny now), i know. It's just that there is an overemphasized correlation of influence on (lack of) originality/creativity. As in, it's difficult to envision a world where someone is "100%" original.
Same old argument (IMHO): Led Zeppelin vs some Ghazal dude's "original" comps or
Raaja's "Veetukku veetukku vaasappadi" or Rahman's "Konjam Nilavu" vs S.A Rajkumar's patented original "Rosappu sinna rosaappu"

Outrageously funny.
It only gets better when bayilvan comes and he pretends to be a police officer talking over phone. Just imagine, he is caught red-handed, caught by the scruff of the neck and tries to talk his way through, purportedly to some senior officer: "family-ai pArththA remba kEvalamAna family-yA dhaan saar irukku", "ellAm maximum cover paNNittEn saar" and then "aamaam saar, mOdharam pOttirukkAn saar" and snatches the ring
And the sign off "ok ok ok ok ok ok (slips 'phone' into undraayar pocket)
The funniest part is bayilvan has not bought this one bit and is watching with farce and catches him again.
Livingstone arbitrates and gives his ring as compensation to bayilvan to end the issue. Vadivelu feels bayilwan does not deserve graceful compensation. He snatches the ring, keeps it on his foot and extends it to bayilwan

I actually did not use originality word - I used - natural and spontaneity. In old comedies, the preparedness is very evident. "Look this is a funny line" timing and some unfunny slapsticks. This "ahA eeii" is what I called spontaneous and natural...that which comes with the flow...like a tea time fun.
The above factor is very tightly related to the originality and I think thats what Groucho mean too

yes it is ferfaamans and the impact it made on us that matter. but original naa, unga defenition padi paathaa kooda, the 1st guy who brings on cinema screen, what he saw on stage or real life is generally considered original. And also, there are many many such original thingi he makes. One general note is, all this is madurai behaviour. may be or may not be.
