Though I'm not qualified enough to comment on this thread, as the (possibly) only fellow left in the hub to defend BR (i.e. BR in association with IR of the pre-vEdham pudhidhu era), want to add a few lines
-Those who try to give "extra-credit" to KBR for OKD and claim that it was better than SR because of him, please recognize that KBR did the same job for SR also
(And in his own attempt to do a similar movie in VVK, he didn't do very well)
-OKD is a polished / sophisticated masAlA (pazhi vAngal killing 3, rapist & accomplices) which worked mainly because of a) KH-Radha scenes + KH doing a great job in the scenes after the suicide & b) Some interesting interchange between appA KH & Revathy. Otherwise, it was very average, had even a 'lEsA neevu' insert by distributor compulsion etc
-Comparing SR with OKD is ridiculous IMO (even if it is done on a Kamal-Kamal basis), classic v/s masAlA
-"thrillers", by nature, lose their shock levels on repeated viewings even within the same time period. The shock-thrill part may even become irrelevant beyond a time period (like someone mentioned, even exorcist / the omen / psycho may put one to sleep nowadays. Actually, I do remember dozing off in a Bangalore MG road theater in late 80's when watching psycho, that too first time viewing! OTOH, good-bad-ugly first time viewing in some MG Road theater around the same time period was such a thrilling experience)
-impact of big theater ambience for thrillers should be recognized - never the same on TV (even with all home theater setup)
-the whole KH-SD romance was unusual & novel, extremely advanced not just for the SR time period, it was refreshingly different even when I viewed 5 years later than release, which was my first time! And the song sequences were phenomenal as well (with special mention to Niwas's camera work, awesome)!
-Imagine just two songs in a KH-SD-BR-IR movie in 70's! That itself was something! And the whole second half was edge of the seat material - i.e. for first-timer! (I believe it depicted things happening in one night).
-My only complain with SR was loud music by IR for the flash-backs (he was still immature in BGM IMHO... like the "Natraj" sequences in moonRam piRai that had some loud sounds that irritated me). The BGM was awesome otherwise, IMHO.
-16V is "ever-re-watchable" because of the genre. Also, such genre doesn't need a big theater (can enjoy even just the olichchiththiram on a kOlAmbi). So, unfair comparison! SR may still be a great first-time watch (keeping in mind the time period), especially in a big theater with mixed audience!

Also, one should watch SR without having a load of expectations for KH (ulaga nAyakan, sakalakalA vallavan etc). He did what was needed for that role - very aptly! I think it was brilliant!

Another (digressive) small point on SR:
At the time of its arrival, Sridevi had reasonable amount of fans in TN. (It won't be an exaggeration to put that number at par with Kamal & Rajini at that point of time).
So, SR was also viewed from a perspective of "will my fav SD escape the psycho"
That's an 180 deg shift from watching with "how my fav Kamal acts in this movie"
