There is this Indira Parthasarathy novel where an English professor keeps quoting Shakespeare lines for various situations. In some cases it would be stunningly appropriate, in some it would be in a ridiculously different context, but he would have switched it and thus applicable. But it would point to how Shakespeare had handled various human situations. You can see many Kamban scholars do that. summA pEsumpOdhu kooda Kamban vandhu vizhum. Because for many situations, they are reminded of how well that moment was handled and presented in Kamban.

For us it is Gounder. Again, I will say, for the same reasons - he has dealt with so many situations so well. We can't be reminded of it.

The pain is when conversing with someone who is not familiar with Gounder. We will be bursting with an appropriate quote, but since the audience we are with won't get it, one has to either stop short of quoting it, or take the effort to explain the context - which makes it fizzle.

Our job to ejucate and influence, I mean, especially folks like you (lot more educated in aNNanology).

The other day I was walking into home, and in the living room wifey was feeding the little one watching and laughing to aNNan's clip on TV. I had lump in my throat.

I have met people who disagreed with me when I said I saw a lot of Gounder in Santhanam - they said I was saying so because I was a Gounder fan

A complete an utter disregard for conventions, people and institutions is a characteristic of Gounder. He broke all kinds of limits of propriety and I'd go so far as saying, he even influenced a way of thinking, an attitude - of several of us. Just think of the template "aamaam, ivaru periya..".

Can any of us say that/ think that without thinking of Gounder? But over time it has become an approach absorbed into our general psyche.Cynicism, nakkal ellAm podhuvA namma oorla increase aanadhukku kaaraNamE Gounder dhaan...appadinnu solla aasaiyA irukku. yaaraavadhu sociology maaNavargaL idhai oru aaivaa eduththu seyyalaam.

Santhanam's universal nakkal, generous distribution of epithets - is something we see a lot of Gounder in. But in terms of delivery, modulation and expression (lack thereof!) he thinks he is carved out something for himself distinct from that of Gounder - and he has a point there.

So he is right in getting irritated. It is not that he is merely doing a mimicry of Gounder. Just that he is unable to recognize Gounder as the source of the whole type of comedy. Isn't the irreverence of Lollu Sabha itself something we see a lot of Gounder in?

Gounder makes fun of Senthil only it seems - andha aLavukku dhaan purinjikittu irukkaan
Got your point PR. YaarO (or a group of people) thamizh mozhiya kaNdu pidichchaanga, naama pEsum bOdhu avangaLukku credit varudhaa enna?

But he would use aNNan's name on the drop of a hat during early days. Now he wants to be unique (all the best). Leave alone the style, the point is, he uses the same phrases used by aNNan. "vaanga yEzhaingaLaa", "bangaLaa naai maadhiri", "ayyOyOyyoyO" are some examples. I have limited knowledge on his movies - aanaa naanE ivlo examples quote panREn, imagine how many he should have used. No wonder Sakala posted this in the shocking thread. the problem is people who do not have good knowledge about GM's movies gives all credit to him.

    Look at this comment: பந்தா காட்டுனா தன பயலுவ மிரண்டு போய் மதிப்பானுங்க -- இந்த டயலாக் வந்த படம் கரகாட்டகாரன், சொன்னவர் கவுண்டமணி...!!! இதே டயலாக்கை சந்தானம் சுட்டு 'கண்டேன் காதலை' படத்தில் வச்சிருப்பான்...

On KKM y'day, the Sooriyan interrogation scene. The situtaion is supposed to be a poignant one as the main protagonist is struggling for his life. Whoever felt that there should be such a scene - a big salute.

GM sweeps this scene single handedly. From entering into the building, meeting naarayanan on the way, scant respect shown by the police, treated indifferently inside the interrogation room to the final pOlaam and walks out without turning back or even saying a bye to "hallO mister vaidhiyalingam".

Seen this many many times but brings out the ROTFL stuff every time.
