What does the chart-ruler feel about the success of Ilaiyaraja and A. R. Rahman?
Says Devi Prasad, "Let's not compare the two. Raja Sir is the God of music and Rahman himself would acknowledge that. In my studio, one full wall is devoted to a portrait of Raja Sir. I know of no other God except him. If I can achieve even a fraction of what he has, I'd consider myself blessed. And the best part is, in spite of his vast knowledge of music Raja Sir could create perfect crowd-pulling songs. I'd also like to achieve the same quality of mass appeal without losing my basic musical sensibilities."

If you come to know the third composition (from Ilaiyaraaja - Fire Star: Synth Pop & Electro-Funk from Tamil films 1985-1989 soundtrack), I am sure you would all be dumbfounded as I was. This is a BGM from a Ramarajan film; Thangamaana Raasa (1989). I could never imagine any other composer (in the world) being this generous and being equal to every director/actor/producer. Electric guitars, acoustic drums, piercing synthesizers all make a unique experience. I never heard such a sound quality, not even in any recent IR soundtracks. I am still amazed how a small company like this could remaster Maestro's 80's soundtrack to such amazing heights. I would like to quote the sleeve notes from the soundtrack about this track.
Most Indian film composers concentrate on writing songs and leave the scoring of the background music to their assistants. As a result, many indian background scores are filled with run-of-the-mill violins and brass crescendos. This is however not true of Ilaiyaraaja, whose background scores are often breathtaking. Unfortunately, very little of this music was ever released. LPs of Bollywood films infrequently contained either the title or background music, but this was even more of a rarity in Tamil cinema. Instead, to buffer out the length of a LP, the same song would feature twice. This piece of electro funk from the THANGAMANA RAASA LP is one of those once-in-a-blue moon exceptions. Strangely enough, it cannot be found on the film, and must have been left on the cutting floor.

Raja is God. God is Raja.

The annual day celebrations of a music school this weekend promises to be a treat for the fans of renowned music composer Ilayaraja.
Babu School of Rhythms, a music school at Thyagarajnagar, on Saturday will felicitate three musicians who have worked with Ilayaraja, and singers from the city will sing songs composed by the maestro.
The daylong celebrations at Gayana Samaja will begin in the morning with the performances of students of the school.
It will be followed by the felicitation function, where students who have passed various grades of music exams will be given certificates.
All the three chief guests are from Chennai: R. Purushotham is a renowned drummer who has been a conductor for Ilayaraja's recordings; S. Sadanandam has been a guitarist with Ilayaraja's band, and M. Saseetharan is a bass guitarist. B.S. Sukumar, founder-principal of Babu School of Rhythms, and his teacher S.G. Raghavan will be present. The school was founded by Mr. Sukumar in 1983 with five students. Now, it has 135. For the last five years, students of the school have been taking exams conducted by The Trinity Guild Hall of London for graduation courses in drums.
Mr. Sukumar feels that music is an important part of our life and must be fostered among children. “I tell all the parents to teach their children some genre of music.” The programme starts at 10.30 a.m. For details, call 8970750780.
