CF, not Dabangg itself. I mean it as a placeholder for the genre.
A genre where the makers are making it clear they are intentionally adopting a 'lower' aesthetic.

    I don't know about Siruthai...

But on this topic, intentionally adopting a "lower" aesthetic ngradhu necessarily thappu illaiyE? I have to clarify that I read "intentionally adopting lower aesthetic" more as intentionally "dumbing down" or "playing it to the galleries"...

3 Idiots could be a great example- I loved that movie to the core. It conveyed it's message (quite loud and quite repeatedly as well) and it set out what it achieved to do. I haven't read the book but the way the characters were written intentionally as caricatures like the professor Virus, the nerdy dude from Pondicherry etc. were all done in a way to convey a serious topic in a jolly/clown-ish tone... Adhukkaga, Hirani-yaala "Hey Ram" maadhiri-yO, illai "Mahaandhi" maadhiriyO padam edukka mudiyuma-nu kekadheega.

Another intentionally lowering the aesthetic is fully applicable to Thenali, IMO... This was unbeliveable given that the man's previous movie was "Hey Ram". Whan I watched "Thenali" first time in theatre, I hated the movie to the core. And I felt like an odd person out because the entire theatre were laughing and roaring throughout the movie including my wife. It was later during the revisist(s) during family re-unions etc. that I figured I damn missed the point of the movie... I completley didn't read the tne of the movie right (starting scene 1 the way Jayaram rescues a mentally disturbed Vijayakumari in a "over the top" (pun intended) fashion...

Thenali is one of my all time favourite time pass movie-nga. Revisits worthy film that doesn't "blade" me at all. SeyaramaR's penchant for comedy has nveer been explored to the hilt before. and HaasaR sollave vendham, semmaiyA lalakeerpaaru (not much with dialogues but mostly via distorted mannerisms, body lAnguEj etc.)

From now your opinions on movies are "in coma" to me.

Mostly as per out tamil cinema, the person who goes into coma stage will be the one who has an Million dollar info, thats the need of the hour and everybody will rush and push to know that, If you get to know that u can either earn or save a million.

Jokes apart, Jai, ungaLukku OKOK nemba pudikkum, pudikkalainnu solravanga kitta kooda, intha aangiL la paarthaa nallaarukkum, antha aangiLla paathaa superaa irukkum, left, top wide aangiL la, chOppu kalar kannaadi mattittu paarunga attagaasamaa irukkum, ippdi suggestion kuduppeeha. aanaa Tenaali ellaam ungaLai coma stage kku thaLLuthO! Olungu mariyaathaiyaa, antha commentkku ful stop vekkaama, comma pottutu, padatha paathuttu vaanga!

I liked Tenaali very much. Me too, like MC said, was speptical about it but the movie worked superb, in re-visits. This was exactly the same opinion of Cinefan too.

    Thanks Sahala.

Thenali is an unapologetic, unambitious, unpretentious movie which actually helps to exceed expectations. It even mocks at it’s own simplicity at couple of places where a) HaasaR spinning the suzhal to narrate a flashback b) HaasaR telling sOthika to get ready to sing a duet with him at a foreign location… To the people I’ve known, surprisingly, most of them see it as a funny movie (just a reality check on myself that I’m not taken over by craziness). Thankfully there is not too much of "aal maaratam's" or "word play/pun etc." that is often assoicated with Kamal/Crazy combo. The movie is very minimalistic and thrives just on the situations than through sheer wittiness.

    Oru sila sample scenes:
    1. The tree falling scene was downright hilarious – Jayaram’s expression, Haasar’s innocence “andha murugan thooki tharuvaan… neengalum konjam thookungO….”
    2. The expression on a terribly broken/frustrated Jayaram on seeing Madanbob rushing towards Thenali (returning back to the home for the zillionth time) to ask “dei thenali andhe foreign rusk dhabba enga da…”
    3. Delhi Ganesh/Ramesh Khanna following Thenali throughout Kodaikanal (however lame and unrealistic it looks) – they kinda serve as folks giving running commentary of the events to add that one last laughter (more of an after thought).

Indhe maadhiri china china things neraiye sollalaam… Even that “eli” fight is surely a better watch than the standard template “dishum dishum” fight one get’s to see in these kind of movies… The only drawback to me is the couple of unwanted duets that is placed at wrong time which slows down the madness.
Indhiya cinema = Kamal HaasaR, Indhiya cricket = Sachin TendulkaR.
