First 40 mins of Johnny on Raj Digital. Seen the film 10+ times but never noticed this piece of dialogue by Rajini. "Make it snappy" in the first con scene at the jewelry. And thats exactly how Mahendran has made the film. Crisp, racy (not the jump cuts / fast forwards racy), not wasting a single frame.

1st scene in which he records the folk music establishes Johnny as a music lover. And then the radio announcement makes the viewer come to know that he is a music loving theif. And the jewelry scene shows the clever side of Johnny and the scene with his father shows whats driving him. Similar beautiful scenes define Vidyasagar and Archana. Now this is how you establish characters.

The jewelry scene is extremely well executed. The cut from Johnny calling the police to the police calling the bank manager is superb. I mean he does not show the the police jeep / tires screetching / Johnny explaining the situation etc.

I guess we are all familiar with the 'appadiththaan pEsuvEn' scene. There is a similar / cute scene in the first 40 mins. Johnny's first meeting with Sridevi in the beach.

SD: Sorry annaikku dhaan ungaLaala boquet kudukka mudiyaama pOchu
    Rajini: Adhukkuththaan oru poonthOttamE anuppittEnE
    SD: * adhu neegaLA
    Rajini: *

Nerd As I read your post, I can also hear the soundtrack....

Jhonny is indeed an amazing movie, not to mention IR's song, BGM, etec etc, my most fav moment of the movie is the "Love scene" beetween RK & SD prior to "en vaanilE "song!

ah, johny! one of my top favorites of rajini's performances. what ease, what charm!
Coincidentally, the 'barber character' look happens to be my all-time favorite 'getup' of his, maybe 2nd only to sivaji's mottaboss. Uber cool looks, these two!
and goes without saying... mahendran, raaja

Raaja paththiyellaam sollavE thEvaiyillai. Two of Raaja's top 10 ever (songs + BGM) are for a Rajini film

Except the few minutes of deceit/murder/fight/forest scenes, 10/10, the film is. And the final 'freeze-frames' with the main theme followed by the flute theme ending with 'Music the Life Giver'. Sooberabbu, one of the best endings ever.

I feel this film had the best RK + SD chemistry!

I revisit Johnny more than the vastly nuanced Aparan (that film misses IR), superiorly conceived/made film IMO.

Have written about that unadulterated style of RK working best. As much of a love story between IR-JM as SD-RK..

That Rajini is a real magnet on screen - even a mundane scene of him stretching out by a swimming pool looks interesting for his casual demeanor. The guy really defines 'cool'.
