& let me know any of you find some similarities with Annan's acting style (or) is this the other way, Annan had some influence of suruli (or) both were together in some drama troupe..

Modhalla idhukku theLivaana oru badhila kodukkalaam. Else honest will always be confused . In fact I just crawled the old thread and got the below. It may look lengthy, but very good discussion:

    P_R…….. nEyar viruppam:
Compare the body language (adhaanga.. indha kayya kaala aatturadhu) of Gounder & Surulirajan?
This question is as a result of "Anbukku Nan Adimai".

First I thought of asking, compare & contrast.. Then I realised "contrast" is abatham.

    Hub Statisticians.. help'unga:
What was the career span of Surulirajan? Which year he died? Is he elder than Gounder?

    avvaLo unnippA gavanichadhillai.

He was 1938 born according to wiki. So must be more or less the same age as GM. He died in1982.

Any further discussion on the lines of vaccuum being filled by GM etc. will meet with my violent disapproval.

Exactly. Suruli had his moments, and yeah, RIP and all that, but he was not a great comedian. He can hardly compete with Tenggai who is a class of his own, less so with another brilliant character artist/comedian VKR who needs a thread of his own, if you ask me.

If Suruli had stayed on, GM would have still happenned. That's a force you can't stop, slow, but sure growth we saw would still have happened and Suruli would have joined the ranks of OKN or Oru Viral dude = butt end of Annan's jokes & kicks.

Honest, I remember Suruli the earliest in Kaase dhAn with that famous "ombOdhu(1-8kULLa oru number-AmAm!)". I dont think he was a leading comedian ever except possibly for a brief period of 2-3 hits in a year. By the time he died, YGM was sharing the big heroes' movies with him, and infact taking the lions' share. Before that, thengai was an equal partner in grabbing the big movies.
He doesnt have too many memorable moments either.

Well, someone who couldnt decisively beat YGM can hardly be a competition for Gounder?

Suruli is mostly unfunny... I used to call someone, sometimes as "dei suruliraaja" (ah calling by names)

but when I saw Anbukku Nan Adimai... ennayum ariyama avarudaya udal mozhi annan'i nyabaga paduthiyadhu

    Yeah I remember.
There was one blogger who tried to say that GM caught the place of SuruLi, which IMO was an absurd thing to say.

I too find Suruli largely unfunny. But one thing has to be said was that his humour was not coming from wordplay or facial contortions but largely from his raspy voice. oru vELai andha maadhiri edhuvum solraarO.

For starters I can't quite think of GM laughing so hard !

Rgearding Suruli, I think we should not deny his position during late 70s. I also have a thought that it was SuruLi who made insult as a comedy. I am not able to substantiate this because I do not remember most of his comedies today which look very unfunny as aon date and did not stand the test of time. For instance his performance in Vandi Chakkaram looked very comical then but not now. Surli passed away while at peak and his place was taken by YGM. With or without SuruLi the phenomenon called GM was bound to happen.

    Sariyaa paarkalayE raasa..

    Jokes apart, I did.

I was sad that some honest opinion was misconstrued. At the same time I was also proud that despite the situation, we can use aNNan's quote to pull some one's leg, because of the confidence we have in each other. May be if some guys come here and see they may be surprised at our paNbaadu.

The quotes you used and the response by PR were stuff
