What great acting even in so-called 'chase sequence'. BM also has fun shooting sequences like this. Specially like the med shot from side angle with clear geography, all three characters in the frame, the conversation very clear, very enjoyable. You could see KH channeling his inner Buster Keaton/Chaplin here..

I can't write long posts.
Mohanlal's comic abilities in saying the lines as characters would say them, making it interesting despite it seem so natural, Kamal is more obsessed about the impact on the audience, he'd like to underline more.

Bockiarach, Mani annan laam Coimbatore-karainga. kandippa avinga accent-top panna mudiyuma? Thalaivan rendoru edathula slip airukkalaam, overa azhuthiyirukkalaam. Idhellaam oru prachanaiya?
Humor was totally in character and I didn't see inconsistency in the character. Even the slapstick moments. Categorically disagree with you on this
As for your larger point, the bottom lone is this - what you refer to as natural skill is the default setting or comfort zone of others. Thala goes well beyond that. Doesn't mean he doesn't have the skill. More importantly, IMO you are highlighting a limitation as a strength

Lot of it must not have been scripted, even by Crazy. Is my guess.

Yes, tonal consistency as an actor even in non-directed films(when he's invested) is his biggest strength. For KK, he'd uniformly role out the non-nonchalant playful tone. Thenali, he'd have to do a tragicomic tone through out, obviously the film itself didn't work for some, but you can't deny he abided by that one mode (not to be confused with 'method') that would operate the film. For MX, he's more of a spectator, as understated as you'd ever find. KH has done variety of styles, no wonder there are divided opinions over what kind of KH one would ideally prefer, what genre, his writing/direction, pre/post Nayagan, etc..etc

"aacha?aacha? Moocha aacha? Kaathundrkkomonno?" (throwback to Pushpak) - what's funny in the line per se? It's hilarity in the film
(not about Kamal the actor here but I'm talking about his humor)
The entry itself maybe Chaplinesque but he takes it beyond that. He makes it Counbatore but not (just) by accent
