May be 7A did much better business and generated more revenue than VELA or MAGAATHA as the producer claimed...
But better in entertainment/public appreciation...

gen question of bo collections:
Tamil movies ku irukara areas : NSC(incl chennai),Cbe,Salem,Madurai,Trichy,Rest, Kerala, Andhra market, Overseas.
Overseas max is ~3 million for endhiran I think.
Larger Chennai area has a population of 80 lakhs which is 1/10 of total tamil population with higher ticket prices compared to the rest of the state.
Assuming a average hit tamil film can make 7-8 times the amt it grosses in larger chennai area seems fair unless its a superhit in andhra .
I think tamil movies 50 crore thaandaradhu kastam based on above scenario.
100 C looks impossible , the numbers look over inflated.. any opinions?
Mankatha 100 crores thandichu, 1 week la nanban 40crores ellam eppadi , doesnt add up at all.

I think the numbers are inflated - No body can know the actual collection of a movie - even the producer since first couple of days fans buy black tickets paying way more than the ticket prices.
even the actual production cost IMO may be inflated we donot know the Remuneration the stars and co-stars recieve.

if i'm not wrong endhiran might have collected about 50-60% of gross revenue outside of tamil nadu. For endhiran approximately, CHENNAI=MALAYSIA=North America

The first half of 2012 has been an interesting period for Kollywood. It has been the year of the underdog, with small budget movies doing well at the box-office.
There have been 73 straight Tamil releases. The hits are purely based on Return on Investment (ROI) and classified accordingly. The number one hit taking into consideration only theatrical collections, it is Udhayanidhi Stalin’s debut film Oru Kal Oru Kannadi (OKOK), followed by Kalkalappu @ Masala Cafe. Both these films from theatrical alone have made their profits.
OKOK said to be made on a budget of Rs 13 Cr is said to have got an estimated share of Rs 25 Cr from theatricals alone. If you take into consideration its satellite rights, overseas, audio and Telugu dubbing rights’ the film can be classified as a blockbuster.
Sundar C’s Kalakalappu @Masala Cafe made on a budget of Rs 6.5 Cr is estimated to have taken a theatrical share of Rs 11 Cr, making it a super hit if satellite rights are also included.
Three small budget films which can be classified as hits are Pandiraj’s Marina, Balaji Mohan’s Kadhalil Sodappavadhu Eppadi and Ezhil’s Manam Kothi Paravai, which are profitable if theatricals and other rights are taken into consideration. These films did reasonably well in theatres but will turn profitable only if other rights are also included.
The other films which are average or break even for the producers concerned taking into consideration theatrical and other rights are – 3, Ambuli, , Kazhugu, Vazhakku En 18/9, Vettai and Saguni
The highest grossing film at the box-office during the first half of the year is Nanban, which is said to have made Rs 28.5 Cr from theatricals, but was made on a budget of Rs 55 Cr.

Return on investment for Vijay movie 50%. 200 days mukki mukki odiyum made only 28Cr. Ippo valikaadha maadhiri siri paapom
Nanban..... only blockbuster to lose 25+ Cr

Bro,
A film's total revenue doesn't include only theatrical revenue but also the satellite rights (Vijay TV bought it for 12 C),audio rights, dubbing rights (the film was dubbed in Telugu as Snehithudu) and other sponsorships (Tata Docomo, etc)
