- didn't felt bored for entire length.. amazing to see Kamal's dialogue delivery @ the age of ~25
- debut for Dileep & S V Sekar..

One of Kamal's best movie, songs were too good! Esp "Sitrpi irukuthu muthum irukuthu" !

i was wondering is that the real situation in late 70's & early 80's.. unemployment.. people used to say "andha kaalathula ellam govt.la easy'ah velai kidaichadhu"

தீபாவளி - தியேட்டருக்குள் நுழைந்தாயிற்று. பலத்த கூட்டம், அடிதடி, பட்டாசு சத்தம், நெரிசல். ஆனால், எனக்கு ஆள் தெரியும் என்பதால் சர்வ சாதாரணமாய் பால்கனிக்குள் நுழைந்தாயிற்று. முதல் காட்சி - "அப்படி இப்படின்னீங்க...யாரையும் காணும்" என்று கௌதமி சொல்ல, "இப்போ பாரு!" என்று பங்க் ஸ்டைலோடு கருப்பு உடையில் கமல்ஹாசன் குதிக்க, 'தேவர் மகன்' ஆரம்பமானது. காட்சிகள் ஒவ்வொன்றும் மெதுவாய் நகர, ஒரு 'கிளாசிக்'கைப் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருக்கிறோம் என்கிற பிரக்ஞையே இல்லாமல் பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். இடைவேளை முடிந்து படம் ஆரம்பித்ததும், கமல் கௌதமி காட்சிகள் - ஒரு முதிர்ச்சியான காதல் தோல்வி. தியேட்டரில் சிலர் சத்தம் போட்டனர். நான் படம் காலி என்று நினைத்தேன். படம் கடைசியில் "போய் புள்ள குட்டிங்கள படிக்க வைங்கடா!" என்ற வசனத்தோடு, இளையராஜாவின் அம்சமான இசையோடு முடிந்தது.

சிவாஜி என்ற நடிகனின் ஆளுமை, பி.சி.ஸ்ரீராமின் ஒளிப்பதிவு, இயல்பான இசை, அருமையான வசனங்கள், பரதனின் இயக்கம் - கமல்ஹாசன் எனும் தயாரிப்பாளர் மற்றும் நடிகனின் கனவு - எல்லாம் எனக்கு பிடித்திருந்தது. ஆனால், அந்தப் படம் மக்களுக்குப் பிடிக்காதோ என்று மன உளைச்சல். ஒரே படபடப்பு. சீர்காழியில் எனது நண்பர்கள் "படம் எப்படி" என்று கேட்டார்கள், "எனக்கு புடிச்சுது!" என்று பதில் சொன்னேன். அடுத்த கேள்வி "ஓடுமா" என்றார்கள். எனக்குப் பிடிக்காத கேள்வி அது என்றாலும், "தெரியலை" என்ற ஒற்றை வார்த்தை பதிலை சொல்லி வைத்தேன். ஆனால், ஏதோ நானே படம் எடுத்து வெளியிட்டது போல ஏகமாய் சிந்தனைகள். யோசிக்க யோசிக்க ஜுரமே வந்து விட்டது. இழுத்து போர்த்தி படுத்து விட்டேன்.

ஆனால், இரண்டு மூன்று நாட்களில் கட்டுக்கடங்கா கூட்டம்...படம் ஹிட். இன்றும் கூட, "நீ படிச்சவனாச்சே...கூட்டுட்டு வா, அந்தப் பய மெதுவாத் தான் வருவான்!" என்று பேசுவது நண்பர் குழாமில் சகஜமான விஷயம். வடிவேலுவின் இசக்கி கேரக்டர், மதன் பாப்பின் வக்கீல் காரெக்டர், 'சந்தனம் மிஞ்சிச்சுன்னா குண்டீலே பூசுவாங்களாம்' என்ற நாசரின் நக்கல், காக்கா ராதாகிருஷ்ணனின் கோணல் வாய் அங்கலாய்ப்புகள் மற்றும் திமிர், கள்ளபார்ட் நடராஜனின் "நல்லா செஞ்சுட்டீக அய்யா" வசனம், ரேவதியின் 'லிஸ்ப்டிக்...எனக்கொண்ணுமில்லை...இந்த ஊர்க்காரப் பயலுக தான்' எல்லாம் பசுமையாய் நிற்கிறது -

இப்படியாக சில தீபாவளி படங்களும், அதனூடான நினைவுகளும் என்னைப் போன்றவர்களுக்கிருக்கிறது என்பதை இன்றைய யூத்துகளுக்கு பிரகடனப்படுத்தத் தான் இந்தப் பகிர்வு

Small doubt about "Punnagai mannan". Those scenes involving Revathy, where they really shot in Kandy?? Or was it in places like "ooty/Kodaikanal" etc ?

Nizhalkal was released same time - talking about unemployment itself (it had Kamal's involvement as well !!)
Kamal had told he like nizhalgal more than VNS.. but in BO VNS was the winner

unemployment was a major problem during the late 70s and early 80s - public sector companies took up majority ppl earlier decades and unless the govt printed extra money to pay for extra employees, there was no way they could afford employing more makkals. they eventually did print and circulate money during our social era, causing inflation egurufying every year.

"yenakku andha companila oru machhaan irukkaaru, indha companila oru chithhappu irukku" rangela recommendation vangithaan vela kedakkin - adhula, namma ooru middle-class value system summaaa velai illaadhavana kurai solradhum, dignity of labor appadeengara matterukku madhippu konjam kooda illaamavum irundhuchhu - thus, KB showcasing his hero as a barber was a nice touch!

however, VNS - though it had its moments, was KB's melo-dramatization of a problem

In VNS, the irresponsible and cunning character of “oru viral krishnarao”, a lesser known charecter, is notable one. The way he threatens Sridvei to get money, asks cigarette from public and having food right after his mom's death....everything has KB's touch... The comedy scene I like the most is Kamal and his friends are acting as they are having nice food in their home while Sridevi was waiting outside. S V sekar "dai sapattai methuva pesaingada... rasam kannula therikuthu"....All the songs are excellent, Chippi Irukkuthu, Theerthakkarayinile, Ranga Rangiah, Nallathor Veenai, Paattu Onnu Paadu Thambi. My favorites are theertha karyinile and nallathor veenai.. It doesn't mean that the other songs are lesser quality. It's lyrics that stands taller than others. I even watched this movie in hindi...IMO, thamizh version is the best.

btw, this was before Kamal took to method acting - which included playing / looking the part of the character (16 vayadhinile was an exception though) - for someone who is unemployed and eating once in a while, Kamal paakaradhukku kizhangu madhiri illa ?!
