While I’m still on a mission in reading all the posts on NT from ‘NT part 1’, time to time I find interesting write-ups and info which I cut and paste in order to read them in a later time. Thorough analyses from Mr Murali Srinivas are treats to read. And Saradha, (where is she now?) her articles are brilliant too. Here is one of Mr Murali’s remark he made on 26 March 2007 (NT part 2 page 102) when answering posts by some useless ‘mood changers’. I quote: ‘Balumahendra is not the type of person who will do remake’ (referring NT movie ‘Vellai Roja’)
I have a question to those ‘mood changers’: why NT’s movie career has to be assessed under the value of Balu mahendra or Bharathiraja or etc? Then what about Krishnan Panchu, KSG, BR Bandulu or APN and Sridhar? Weren’t they fantastic directors at their time? Nobody should be bothered to answer to the people with half - baked knowledge of NT movie career.
Coming to Mr Murali’s earlier comment on BM didn’t like remakes, are you sure? I’m not a fan of BM, but I thought he was a good director too until I watched ‘Julie Ganapathy’!! What a carbon copy!! Does the movie ‘Misery’ rings a bell? In which James Caan and Kathy Bates acted and Kathy Bates received an Oscar for her role in it. BM even copied ‘Julie Ganapathy’s screenplay and dialogues!!! Watch it few times, you will realize it.
That was during my life in UK, I was having a chat with my English friend in the office and happened to mention the movie (Julie Ganapathy) I watched the previous night. When I started narrating the story line, she stopped me and said “it’s Misery, isn’t it?” I got embarrassed. Then I borrowed the vhs video cassette of ‘Misery’ from the local library and watched it. Except the ‘masala’ items for the Tamil viewers, the movie’s screenplay, and even some dialogues are exactly as in ‘Misery’. Snow in the original movie has changed to rain in the ‘remake’. Instead of pig, it’s a dog, plus an ‘inviting’ dance from Ramya Krishnan.
To make my fury worse, on the title of Julie Ganapathy, it states ‘story, screenplay, dialogues and direction- balu mahendra!!!” After that, my least respect for BM was gone and started thinking that his other movies could be also ‘kind of’ remake too, like the current directors do, picking stories from ‘here and there’.
What I’m trying to point out here is; people come to this thread just want to pour out whatever (little) they know about NT and it doesn’t mean they are all experts. They don’t need to be answered.
By the way, this is an over-due response, but I only found out about this thread and joined with you, kindred spirits recently!

Whether NT over-played or under-played he always made sure the respected scenes are thoroughly enjoyable. If we take his romantic scenes as examples; I can mention one for each. I watched ‘Irumbu thirai’ recently and it is one of the movies where NT showed his subtle but superb performance. There is a scene when NT describes Vyjayanthimala about his lady love and how he met her. It was funny but very sweet to watch. As NT describes it, Vyjayanthimala gets really jealous and knowing that, he carries on until he tells her how old they were then. Fantastic scene. Secondly, one of NT’s over-played romantic scenes is (there are many, but one I could remember at the moment ) in ‘Deivamagan’ where NT goes after Jayalalitha and makes funny moves to attract her attention. His body language is more than subtle but equally enjoyable and sweet!
