joe sir, in case of Vishwaroopam, it was clear that JJ wanted Kamal to come to her first before going to court. She stated that openly in her press meet.

I dont think she will be much bothered abt Vijay and his movie. As usual she must have insulted SAC badly if he had gone to her asking for a seat.

Here the govt has not banned the movie. infact, nobody has banned it.. Just that theatre owners are afraid to release it .. could be a hoax call also.. the opposing group was never heard ever before..

Just got home from FDFS here in Singapore.

Movie started with a thank you note to a few directors including Mani Ratnam from ALV. First half was full comedy and romance except for a few scenes in the beginning and end. Santhanam was excellent. Every line he uttered was hilarious. Amala Paul was bearable. 2nd half was full on action and drama with tiny bits of comedy. Vijay was excellent. His range of emotions were a joy to watch. If I was to be completely honest, there weren't as many 'wow' moments like in Thuppakki. That being said, I enjoyed this film more than Thuppakki. Sathyaraj also did his role justice. The movie reminded me of Sarkar in more ways than one. Sarkar is to Thalaivaa like how I am Sam is to Deivathirumagal, no matter what ALV says. Even my dad, who thought Thuppakki was an average film, admits this was good. That's enough for me.

100cr isn't a problem. ALV didn't screw this up. First half seemed a tiny bit lengthy but second half was taut and crisp. Choreography of all songs were commendable, especially Tamil Pasanga. 2013 is Vijay's year too. :)

Anban,

Stopping a movie release for a hoax call has never ever happened in the history of TN. If at all a theatre receives such a call, its the duty of the government to make sure that the security is beefed up. For a govt which boasts of 'perfect law and order', this is not at all a big issue.

JJ is not going to provide police force for cinema .. that she has made clear a lot of times .. sandiyar shooting and vishwaroopam release are examples.. but here, the movie is not banned.. there is no legal/political stay on the movie.. just that the theatre fellows are afraid..

one more thing, i think they want protection and tax exemption .. ethaavathu onnu thaan kedaikka vaaippu irukku .. tax kattaatha movie-a ethukku sir protection-nu govt kettaa enna bathil sollrathu ??

Its not that theatres are afraid. The theatres I went yesterday for tickets informed that they will issue the tickets once they get the nod. And this hoax call was reportedly received on Wednesday morn. But many theatres which were supposed to start the booking the previous night didn't open the booking. It was as if they were waiting for something to happen.

Reminded me of Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah from Jodhaa Akbar. But it wasn't just with dance. There was story progression too, like Magudi in Kadal.

AL Vijay : (We are doing all possible things to release Thalaivaa film on Aug 9th. I tried to meet CM but couldn't, due to appointment issue. Vijay Sir and SAC met government officials in kodanaadu. Also a preview show was arranged for government officials on aug 8th. The release deals with more complex issues in producers and distributors side. But the important thing is film releases on Aug 9th.)

Even though film bookings are cancelled, there are more chances for Thalaivaa to be released latter today eve after talks as it happened for kavalan. Lets's hope for the best.

Just saw the latest teaser on Sun Music. Reminded of the action scenes. This is one area that I liked in Thuppakki more. There were some 'flying' moments in this film that reminded me of his earlier films. Not the realistic action like in Thuppakki. However, these scenes do not occur too many times.

http://behindwoods.com/tamil-movies-cinema-fans-column/thalaivaa-singapore-review-thalaivaa-thalaiva.html

Thalaiva released today amidst gargantuan hype and high fan frenzy. The expectation is high from this Vijay – Vijay duo association which has a regular A.L. Vijay crew comprising cameraman Nirav Shah, editor Anthony and music director G. V. Prakash Kumar and produced by Chandra Prakash Jain. Has the team succeeded in giving the perfect entertainer?

It was so hard to get tickets in Singapore as the theatre owners were not sure about the release. Tickets reservation started on the 7th august and Singapore's Indians got a chance to experience the premier show on the 8th August itself .With Singapore`s national day holiday and Hari Raya (Ramzan) holiday, it is expected for family audience to be mixed around with Vijay fans . Now let’s get into the review (Spoiler -Free)

Thalaiva is basically about Viswa (Vijay), a dancer, who is leading a dance group "Thamizh Pasanga" as well as taking care of his "Ganga" water bottle business in Australia. While being busy balancing both his passion and business, our hero falls in love with our Heroine. Guess what! It’s not only him but Santhanam and a number of Australian Indians fall for Amala Paul too. As usual after some cat and mouse games, love blossoms between Vijay and Amala Paul.(watch out for one of our Indian Youtube sensation in the film) What’s next ? Amala Paul Father (Suresh) wants to see Vijay's father in regards of the wedding plan. The rest of the film is about Vijay’s father (Sathyaraj), what happened to him? How Vijay became Thalaiva forms the rest of the story.

The film is very slow in pace throughout the movie. The romantic episodes with Amala Paul are cute and lovely especially during the dance practice between the love duo.

Amala Paul has a good scope in first half however she is missed in the second half. However she is not the typical commercial cinema heroine who makes glamorous appearances in songs or dance. It’s great that she did the dubbing for herself and there is no problem with it. It is more natural and suitable for her character. Bravo! As usual Santhanam rocked the screen with his great comedy line and made the audience burst into laughter.

The Villain has nothing to do in the film except for meditating and chanting his enemy name.

Coming back to our main man Vijay, he looks as youthful as ever. His costumes have changed after Thuppakki. He is more stylish and lovely as ever. Its lovely to see him change his get ups throughout the film. We got a dancer Vijay who has great costume, a depression Vijay with stubble, a Thalaiva Vijay with white shirt and thick moustache as well as his final form as a Thalaivar at the end of the movie. There is no punch dialogue. This is one of his settled performance. His prowess at dance and fights is well-known. There is no complain about them. Thanks to the fight master Silva, we don't have Vijay doing unnecessary flying stunts like in the movie Kuruvi.

Now, for the other Vijay, this film is inspired by Nayagan and Hindi film Saktar. The screen play is slow. Don’t expect a very pacy screen play like Thuppakki however he put great twist in the films. Look out for the one before the interval. Performances and scenes were okay. One can feel that he is better doing subjective films like Theivathirumagan and Madrasipattinam

G. V. Prakash Kumar songs are a hit already especially Vanganna Vanakangana. However the bgm is a let down.

Nirav Shah camerawork is flawless and has captured the Mumbai and Australia very well.

Editor Anthony work is also not pleasing as an action film, it is super long and slow. We can't blame him either as the scenes are such.

To end it up, Thalaiva is strictly for Vijay fans. Do not keep Thuppaki in mind while watching the movie.

Thalaivaa and feels that A slow film with a good amount of substance. More class, less mass. Read full review here....IlayathalapathyVijay is back with hisone and only release in 2013, Thalaivaa. Joining hands with director Vijay for the first time, Thalaivaa stars Amala Paul, Santhanam, Sathyaraj, Ponvannan and many others. Produced by Mishri Productions, Thalaivaa has cinematography by Nirav Shah and music by GV.Prakash.Thalaivaa is a 3 hour biopic of a common man who turns into a leader. The movie starts off in Mumbai with Sathyaraj's character being introduced.

It quickly jumps onto Australia, where we have Vijay's entry with TamizhPasanga. The screen is set ablaze with some breath-taking dance moves. Amala Paul and Santhanam make their entry, and the first half moves filled with fun, while looking colorful. There is a hilarious surprise too. Thelove track is well etched and special credits have to be given to the song picturisations. As the movie moves to Mumbai, more facts are unveiled, with the mother of them all at the interval block.Into the second half, and Thalaivaa begins to drag around a bit. The unimpressive villain, a few clich-ridden old fashioned scenes and a needless second heroine all work against the film. But AL Vijay does garner your attention with some brainy scenes and a good climax.

VaanganaVanakangana is an added delight.Thalaivaa is undoubtedly one of Vijay's best performances till date. His casual acts as the chic and trendy dancer as well as the spirited leader are a treat to watch. He has truly matured as an actor. Amala Paul fits in her shoes to the T, and is soon reaching out to be one of the dusky beauties of Tamil Cinema. Sathyaraj has a powerful role here, and makes his presence felt while he's onscreen. Santhanam packs a punch with his one-liners and is sure to put a smile on your face with every appearance. The supporting actors have done justice to their roles, Ponvannan and Rajeev Pillai stand out among the rest.Nirav Shah's professionalismwith the camera is felt in every frame. He is one of the lynchpins of the movie and has put in a superb effort. Even though the editing is good, some effort could have been put in to make the movie crispier. Stunts by Stunt Silva are fine, however they arescarce.AL Vijay always opts for a slow moving screenplay and Thalaivaa is no different. The movie takes its owntime to unfold.

One does tend to loseinterest at some points. Had he worked a little harder on the execution, Thalaivaa would have gone places.GV.Prakash's songs might have done wonders, but his BGM is totallyout of place. The excitement in someinteresting scenes has been broughtdown by the bland background score. One had to wait long for the Thalaivaa theme, and it has been putto worst use at the climax.Thalaivaa is not the normal racy entertainer you will expect from Vijay. It is a movie which travels on aslower note, peppered with morale values and lessons to learn. It will entertain you and at the same time, enlighten you. A different Vijay film, by any means.

Verdict : A slow film with a good amount of substance. More class, less mass.

Review : Anna – Wasted Opportunity

Tamil Star Vijay has teamed up with director A.L.Vijay for the film ‘Anna’ .The story of the film is expected to be along the lines of Kamal Haasan’s ‘Nayakudu’. But can the film live up to the promise? Amala Paul is the heroine and Kasi Viswanadham is the producer. Let us see how the movie is.

Story :

Vishwa (Vijay) is an aspiring dancer based in Australia. He runs a mineral water plant and earns well. But his real passion is dance and he works hard to succeed in that area. One day, he comes across Meera (Amala Paul) and falls for her charms. He also manages to impress Meera’s father (Suresh).
Suresh insists upon meeting Vishwa’s father and so they travel to the city of Mumbai. Vijay thinks his father is a simple businessman. But he realises that his dad is a local strongman revered by thousands of poor people. He realises that he is the son of Anna (Sathyaraj).
Vijay’s world is shattered. Fate conspires against him and he loses everything that is dear to him. In these circumstances, will he stand up for the people who are dependent on his family? Will he take up the mantle of Anna? That is what ‘Anna’ is all about.

Plus Points :

Vijay has given a decent performance as Vishwa. Amala Paul has a key role in the film and she looks pretty. Sathyaraj has very good screen presence and he has done justice to the role of Anna. In fact, Sathyaraj’s scenes are easily the best sequences in the film. Veteran actor Suresh has performed well.
The interval twist is good and the film gains momentum here. Santhanam brings much needed comic relief and his one liners work most of the time. He has some nice lines, like “Orey, vere vaadi auto ki nuvvu ayudha pooja cheyali anukovatam thappu ra”.

Minus Points :

The basic story line is similar to Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s ‘Nayakudu’. Except for the interval twist, the story proceeds along expected lines.
The treatment of the hero’s character could have been a lot better. Vijay never really rises from Vishwa to Anna in the film. The aspect of ‘hero elevation’ is sorely missing and the director wasted many chances where this could have easily been achieved. For stories of this kind to work, viewers have to be drawn in emotionally. A.L.Vijay’s narration does not achieve this objective.
Except for Santhanam’s one liners, the entertainment quotient in the film is zero. The film’s run time, which is in excess of 3 hours, is a major minus point. The patience of viewers will get tested at times, especially in the second half.
There are a lot of loopholes in the plot. It is not possible to elaborate on this point anymore, as this would reveal the twists in the story. Songs are a major minus point for the movie. None of them manage to create an impact.

Technical Aspects :

Nirav Shah’s cinematography is decent. Editing is bad. A lot of scenes in the second half could have been trimmed. Background score by G.V.Prakash is not up to the mark. Dialogues are just about ok.
A.L.Vijay is a mismatch for this subject. A director with a good ‘mass pulse’ would have done justice for this movie.

Verdict :

‘Anna’ is a disappointment. In fact, it is a wasted opportunity. With that kind of a story line, the film should have ended up as a solid commercial drama. But all it manages to do is drag on and on. The Box Office prospects for this film look quite bleak in Andhra Pradesh.

'Anna' (Thalaiva) Review: Tests Patience

Vijay, who received good reviews with 'Thupaki' has come up with Thalaiva in Tamilnadu that has released as 'Anna' in Telugu. The point to be underlined is that the film released in Telugu prior to that of Tamil. Though Vijay is yet to find his grip on Telugu market unlike Vikram and Surya, the makers have expected lot with this release. But the film tests the patience for 3 hours.

Story:

Ram Murty becomes the savior of all poor people in Mumbai. People call him Anna (Satya Raj). He feels that it's dangerous for his son Vishwa (Vijay) to stay in Mumbai with him. Hence he sends him Australia. He runs his own business there and also participates in dance competitions as hobby. He falls in love with Meera (Amala) and comes back to India with her to take permission from father to marry her. Only then Vishwa comes to know what his father has been doing. With various twists and turns, Vishwa becomes Anna.

Performances:

Vijay's performance is just ok. There is no change in get up in big way between the jovial character in first half and serious role in the 2nd. Tamil fans of Vijay may feel his performance great but it will not appeal for Telugu audience.

Amala Paul got an opportunity to perform. She did well. Satya Raj and Abhimanyu Singh are ok. Santhanam as usual delivered his mark of punch dialogues. Ponnambalam, Naresh etc did justice for their characters.

GV Prakash Kumar's music is spineless. Background ground disappointed fully. Songs are dull. The major drawback for this film is music. Cinematography is good but same mood was followed throughout the film. The dark tone is not required for the jovial episodes in Australia. The length of the film marred the entire show.

Tamil director Vijay carved a nice story like his previous film 'Thanadavam'. But he failed in execution. The required intensity in narration was missing. Forced comedy and unnecessary sub plots killed the film. Had this story was given to Telugu directors, they would have made a powerful commercial entertainer with great elevation for hero that brings hysteria for fans.

Highlights:

Interval episode
Santhanam's comedy punches

Draw Backs:

Run Time
Screenplay
Direction
Analysis:
Director failed in all the ways in projecting the protagonist as hero. The love track in first half need not be made so lengthy. He could have given interval 20 minutes before itself. The director couldn’t reach the expectations even with second half by giving real elevation for Anna.

Once hero becomes Anna, the story should run but shouldn’t crawl. The police station scene and the court scene are the unnecessary ones those marred the interest levels of audience. Adding to this, the second heroine track disturbs totally. Santhanam's comedy in second half didn’t gel well with the main plot.

While the audience experiences the pain of lengthy narration, the scene where Vijay controls himself to dance before a song comes as a knockout blow.

There will be many films with 3 hours duration, but Anna is a 3 hour film which gives an experience to audience that they have watched a movie with 3 days duration. Though the openings are good due to no direct releases, the result need not be predicted again.

Bottom Line: Painful
Rating: 2/5

Vijay.... definitely tried giving his best to this otherwise boring and lull screenplay..... Absolute delight to see him dance in 2 episodes (Manada Mayilada mathiri erunthuchungrathu vera visheyam :( ) Emotes well during the interval block and the scene before that with Sathyaraj.....

Amala Paul.... She says"I am not fit in this field (police)... towards the climax" aana unmai ennavo "She is not fit for this industry"..... heroines like Anushka would have pulled this role effortlessly and made it a splendid performance... another let down by AL Vijay...

Shantham, as always  how many films can be depended on him... this is definitely not healthy.... Herova nambi padam edungappa....
His chemistry with Amala Paul was more refreshing than the lead pair.....

Sathyraj he is definitely going to be a great character artist for the coming years..... AL Vijay doesnt know how to use such strong personalities, non of the scene created impact....!

GVP -- Good Songs.. and Nice BGM (in few places) few song placements could have been better... (He should stop stereotyping poor Saindhavi, she is definitely a versatile singer... stop giving her the same kind of songs... dont want another Bombay Jayashree)

ALVIJAY nee mattum en kaile maatikitte setha da... Oru nalla titleaa WASTE panniteyeee :banghead:

Make way for Vijay the Great http://www.livemint.com/rf/Image-621x414/LiveMint/Period1/2013/08/10/Photos/thalaiva--621x414.jpg

features two-and-a-half Vijays. One is the Tamil superstar, whose mere presence is usually accompanied by a cacophony of whistles, cheers and ringing cash registers. The second is the director, whose movies includeMadrasapattinam and Deiva Thirumagal. The half bit is the ghost of the character played by Amitabh Bachchan (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Amitabh%20Bachchan) in so many movies in the seventies and eighties that the name became synonymous with a grumpy vigilante with parental issues.
Thalaivaa doesn’t only reference Bachchan movies like Deewar. This is film as bibliography, so there are citations from Francis Ford Coppola (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Francis%20Ford%20Coppola)’s The Godfather, Mani Ratnam (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Mani%20Ratnam)’s Nayakan (based on The Godfather), Ram Gopal Varma (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Ram%20Gopal%20Varma)’s Sarkar (also inspired by The Godfather) and Vijay (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Vijay)’s own back catalogue. No wonder the movie clocks at three hours and two minutes.
http://www.livemint.com/r/LiveMint/Period1/2013/08/10/Photos/thaliva--330x220.jpg

Vijay plays, or rather poses as, Vishwa, who’s leading a cosy life in Australia, supplying bottled water and dancing in a hip-hop crew, until he falls for Meera (Amala Paul (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Amala%20Paul)). Moved by his love for Meera, Vishwa makes a trip to Mumbai to confabulate with his father, who has up until now been no more than a voice on the other end of the phone. Anna (Sathyaraj) is actually an gangster, who, in the vein of Nayakan’s anti-hero, has been running his own little Tamil Nadu in and around Dharavi. A series of plot twists put Vishwa in Michael Corleone (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Michael%20Corleone) mode, taking over from his father and matching wits and sinew with rival don Bhima (Abhimanyu Singh (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Abhimanyu%20Singh)).
N Santhanam (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/N%20Santhanam)’s off-kilter comedy makes it easier to sit through the slack opening set-up, which showcases Vijay’s dancing skills, while the superstar comes into his own when Thalaivaa enters action mode. The filmmaker gives the movie a lived-in texture by shooting on location in several places in Mumbai—he makes good use of Worli Fort and the fishing village, in particular—and some scenes are snappily directed, but it is truly amazing that he takes as long as he does to get to the inevitable and predictable climax. The idea, presumably, is to give Vijay devotees an epic experience, so non-fans of the actor, who masks his limited acting range by adopting a cool and detached air, can safely stay at home. The opening credits, a roll call of historical personalities ranging from Mahatma Gandhi (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Mahatma%20Gandhi) to Mao Zedong (http://www.livemint.com/Search/Link/Keyword/Mao%20Zedong), make it clear that Vishwa is in good company

BLESSING IN DISGUISE

When our family planned a trip to Mysore for the Ramadan Weekend one month ago, nothing looked particularly concerning. The moment Thalaivaa’s release date was confirmed, I was cursing my luck of missing FDFS in Chennai. However, with the turn of events of the last few days, I was counting my stars today morning, while catching up the movie FDFS in Sathyam Cinemas, Mysore to a rousing response by the audience here. The theater was 70 percent full, largely Tamil-speaking and they were quite lousy.

I went to the theaters with zero expectations, because of 2 reasons:

1. Vijay’s HOT-COLD Record:

Vijay has this habit of delivering super-natural duds after a stupendous success. While Maduray, the successor to Ghilli tore my ear-drums, the SAC supervised, Aadhi, which followed the success of Pokkiri brought me migraines. When Vijay in Aadhi pre-interval sequence jumps from a bridge to cut off villain’s head, I for a moment thought I lost mine.

2. AL. Vijay’s COLD-COLD Record:

AL. Vijay is a director who religiously follows his guru, Priyadharshan and hence each and every movie of his is either inspired/copied from a Hollywood flick. Because he has a killer team, his products usually comes out as a decent one and despite that, I was reserved/doubtful in his ability to handle a mass hero.

Thalaivaa neither falls into Vijay’s HOT-COLD category, nor fits into AL Vijay’s COLD-COLD stuff. It is definitely a good attempt with sound basics and with Vijay looking super-fresh and fit, I, an ardent Vijay fan enjoyed the movie to the hilt.

Yes, the movie was slow-paced, but I never really bothered because Illayathalapathy was at this best. Vijay’s physique, dresses and body language all brought back memories of Vijay of old. Loved him in the flick.

Plus, the script does not look a carbon-copy of any movie (in my knowledge). Sure it has shades of Nayagan/God Father/ Sarkar, but it is certain that AL. Vijay has put in a lot of quality effort for this movie. Kudos ALV.

Credit should be given where it’s due, and just because, we fans expect another Thuppakki, nothing can be taken away from the honest effort of AL Vijay. Thuppakki and Thalaivaa are films with 2 different themes, and it will be a gross sin to compare both.

Enjoy Thalaivaa for what it is worth and I for certain, did that.

All Vijay fans who complain about the movie and question ALV’s effort should give a second thought.

HIGHLIGHTS

Vijay’s dancing for Tamil Pasanga, the scintillating ‘Yaar-intha-salai-orum’ melody with the ever-graceful hero, the beautifully-pictured ecstasy of dance, are all testimony to Vijay’s graceful and ever-delightful screen presence. Loved it.

Santhanam was at this best. His one-liners were enjoyable and he definitely added a lot of flavor to the movie.

Amala Paul, despite being abused by fans for being cast opposite Vijay, was not bad. She, was o.k.

Sathyaraj was super-cool and the entire gang (Rajiv Pillain & Co) were commendable.

BOX OFFICE

Most of Vijay’s mass/gangster/don movies of the past such as Bagavathi, Maduray, Thirupaaachi, Sivakasi, Vettaikaran and Sura suffered from a less-than-emphatic directors, mindless casting and poor story-lines. These movies relied solely on Vijay’s mass charm/appeal. Plus, the transformation of Vijay into a don/gangster were either rushed or shown in poor light. Vijay, also for this part, looked too young to fit into those roles. On the contrary, right from the early days, the don/gangster roles, fits best for Ajith.

But Thalaivaa is a product from a quality team, the casting looks good and more importantly, the transformation of Vijay into a leader/don/gangster is a lot more logical and shown much much better and Vijay looks super-fit and matured to take up the role of a leader/don/gangster, this time.

1, Vijay fans will have no complains, they will cherish this dancing version of their Thalaivaa.

2. Neutrals definitely would not hate the movie in the way they did the above listed past mass movies of Vijay. They might find it to be slow, but there ends the discomfort and

3. The third most important group, the relentless lovers (haters) of Vijay would also not hurt big. In fact, a significant portion of this group, always make it a point to visit the theaters to at least hurt/mock Vijay. With the movie deemed ‘slow’, there is extra-incentive for this group and they might even watch the movie more than once:-D. I think at least 10 to 15 percent of Vijay’s movie revenues for all his movies, are from this group.

So, the movie should do well and if the problems in TN are sorted out at the earliest, Thalaivaa should and will be counted as a good/honest effort from both the Vijay’s.

Hence, I don’t think this movie will do mediocre business. Thuppakki's benchmark is far-off at this point, but sure this might turn out to be another Velayutham/Nanban kind-off success.

PAIN

Vijay has flirted with danger by rubbing shoulders with both the big political parties of Tamilnadu. He will continue to pay the price. He is too young for politics and SAC should call it a day. We have had, enough of him.

Vijay, please don’t fiddle with both movies and politics. I know, you are much better these days, but still you need to do even better. Stay focused with movies, you will always be one among the best, if not the best.

HOPE

Watching Thalaivaa, you never quite feel that this man is 39. He looks good for so many more years and that is a big hope.

Lot’s more to come from my Thalaivaa.

Ellam ok.. but AL Vijay credit kodukuratha othukkave mudiyathunga...

Enna oru impactful sceneaa erunthukanum, when Vijay asks Sathyaraj yaarukupa ithellam panreenga.. and then the camera moves to the crowd shouting Anna Anna.... theaterle oru impact kooda illa...such scenes should bring out the talent of the director... Esp when we have seen such scenes in many movies which created a chill in the spine when it is depicted (Iruvar, Mudhalvan, Guru.....) Either u should think new and show it on the screen OR when u decide to be inspired from a legendary scene u should definitely do it better or atleast match the steps ... if u dont do either then u are a big failure (The Cassette tracking episode - was more like a nalaiya iyakunar material.... and the musical-dance episode of Amala and Vijay (No question on the choreo...) but it was so amatuerish.....

This is deifinitely another movie which could have been GREAT under a decent director.... Just My THought.....

Pokkiri
(2007 Pongal) was followed by ATM(2007 Diwali)..... Adhi(2006 Pongal)actually followed Sivakasi (Diwali 2005)

Thanks a ton BM for your lightning-speed and razer-sharp contributions to Thalaivaa's thread. You have been taking efforts to post the most important developments/statements/reviews about Thalaivaa.

While, the 300-odd page thread of Thuppakki did not contain many post of yours (obviously, you were busy or something), but you have been spending your time and energy for this thread.

Kudos, and way to go

I did not post much during sura, red card episodes, vizhupuram marathon ect times too (in fact i was free those times). Since some people are not updating reviews/news here as they searched every nook and corner and updated last year in other thread (may be now staying inside theatre and watching continuous shows). As all are busy, i am taking the pain and posting the reviews. Its too early to exchange thankyou/don't mention it, that should come much later. Btw never expected this kind of situation will come again this soon, genuinely sad and my condolences.

Critics Review: Thalaivaa Gets Mixed Response

Thalaivaa got a grand release on August 9. The movie starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay starrer is receiving mixed reviews. Thalaivaa directed by AL Vijay, has Vijay and Amala Paul in the lead roles. The movie deals with the story of a dancer (Vijay), runs a dance school in Sydney, where he meets the female lead Amala Paul. The actress joins his dance school. Soon, the duo falls in love. Vijay makes a trip to Mumbai to see his dad and ends up becoming a mass leader. Actor Vijay's Thalaivaa is getting huge response all over. Few critics claim that the movie is adaptation of Kamal Hassan's Nayagan and Ram Gopal Varma's Bollywood movie Sarkar. Thalaivaa is also an attempt from the crew to title Vijay as Thalaivaa. After saving Mumbai people from a serial bomb blast in Thuppakki as Defence Inteligence Agency (DIA) agent, Vijay has landed in the same city as mass leader. The much anticipated movie is receiving average ratings from the critics.

Watched it..kinda liked it..super-nu solla mudiyathu but ok..abit lengthy but overall watchable..glad vijay is no longer in villu/sura/kuruvi mode..his movies are now slick and well presented..
Pluses:
-Vijay and his body language
-Santhanam was surprisingly good
-Yaar intha salai visuals.. one of the best shot songs in recent times..beats the overhyped tamil pasanga
-production values
-enjoyable first half..director vijay is good in handling romance :)

Minus:
-nothing new in the story
-lengthy 2nd half
-amala ball..the north indian chick who comes in the 2nd half was much better :)

Anna off to pretty Average Start

Vijay`s Anna is off to a pretty average start at the AP Boxoffice. The film has decent Day 1 numbers in big centers but is rather poor in smaller towns. The film`s public talk isn`t encouraging enough either to pick up from here on. Anna released in more than 250 screens all over the state and is estimated to have collected a share of 75 lakhs (appx.). Vijay`s last two films had a better start here in AP probably due to other Big Names also part of the project like Shankar & Murugadoss.

Despite even a request in someone's previous post fans of other actors are hell bent on sharing news and reviews here. The least you could do is share them after the movie releases in TN. And don't immediately retaliate saying Vijay fans did the same before. There would be fans like that on either side. But hope some will have the least courtesy to wait for the movie to release in TN first. Sharing the reviews of the dubbed version of a movie. Sabbba!!!

When the movie releases movie will become mass hit!
It is very nice more class than mass film from thalapathi!
You will see a super cool vijay!
My review:i would say one of the best films to have come in the godfather genre!Neutral audience and thalapathi fans all loved it!going 2nd time tmr!
Dun worry once movie releases anti-vijaysku cake irukku(ARM style)
Actually film is quite long but for a 3hr film keeping this pace is quite a challenge!

Sify rating : 4/5

Vijay has matured as an actor of substance in commercial cinema with Thalaivaa. Not only is he a one-man entertainment troupe who can dance, fight, romance and do comedy with ease, but can also act. One of the highlights of the film is the emergence of Vijay as an actor from a star, as he excels in emotional scenes.

However he is let down by a weak script and takes its own time to evolve, which slows down the narration. The film at 177 minutes tests your patience especially in the second half. The thread of the film is etched out of various don films where father is a don and son under difficult circumstances is forced to take over his mantle (Godfather(English), Thevar Magan, Nayagan, Naduvazhigal (Malayalam), and Sarkar(Hindi) ).

The film begins with how Anna (Sathyaraj) a Tamil in Mumbai becomes a powerful don and is revered by the locals for the way he provides instant justice and runs a parallel government. His son Vishwa (Vijay) is living a cloistered life in Sydney where he is a successful entrepreneur and has also his own Tamil dance troupe.

However, suddenly due to certain circumstances he is forced to take over his father’s empire and continue to provide instant justice to the people who had trust in his father. Will the son rise to protect his father’s legacy and take on his enemies’ forms the rest of the story

The best part of Thalaivaa is the first half set in Australia as the breezy romance between Vijay and Amala Paul peps up the mood, along with the comedy of Santhanam makes it a fun ride. However the second half, the film loses its tempo and drags big time as things get serious with no romance or comedy.

GV Prakash’s background score especially the theme music and a couple of songs are really good. “Yaar Indha Saalai..” is soothing and picturised beautifully in Australia and Vaanganna Vanakkanganna. is rocker mainly due to Vijay’s dancing and singing. Nirav Shah’s camera is picture perfect with the right colour tone.

Amala Paul shines especially in the romantic scenes in the first half and dubbing in her own voice is a major plus. In the second half her characterisation undergoes a change, and the way she manipulates the climax is fantastic. Her costumes are chic and performance is top class. Sathyaraj is terrific as the Godfather of Mumbai. Santhanam is a scream, and his one-liners with a straight face provides humour in a grim story.

The major plus of the film is Vijay. He is good in emotional scenes, the best is the point where he sees his father getting blown up. You can see that he has evolved as a fine actor with a restrained and mature performance in that particular scene. And is there a better dancer than Vijay in Tamil cinema? You can’t take your eyes off him in the Vaanganna.. song.

On the downside, the film has too many scenes inspired from Godfather mafia type movies. The film is nearly 3 hours and needs urgent trimming to make it fast. The second half is longer than the first half and the pace slackens due to slow change of scenes.

On the whole, Thalaivaa likes the curate’s egg is good in parts and would have been better if it was more racy and shorter.

Verdict - Entertaining

Sura happened three years ago.
Vizhupuram marathon, i don't understand how that could be counted into box office calculations/movie reviews. Running for cover is far better than Killing a distributor IMHO.
"This Soon"??? - 4 commercially successful movies, in a time when even delivering 2 hits in a row has become a distant dream for many experienced actors in business. Not bad at all.
Crucially, as a matter of fact, Thalaivaa's verdict in TN is not yet out and hence cannot be quite compared to some colossal failures in Tamil Cinema in the recent past.
Hence, your genuinely sad condolences makes complete sense.

Regarding the second point. It can still be celebrated. Let it release. We cannot rule out the possibility. The mixed reviews can turn out be a blessing in disguise and lower the expectations of people in TN. That can be a good thing at times.

Fan ends life after failure to watch Vijay's film 'Thalaivaa'

Coimbatore:A 20-year old man, said to be a hardcore fan of Tamil actor Vijay, allegedly committed suicide here on Saturday 'dejected' over not being able to watch the latter's new film 'Thalaivaa, whose release has been put off in Tamil Nadu, police said.

Vishnu, a construction worker residing at Thudiyalur on city outskirts, was stated to be upset over the non-release of the film on Friday and had gone to Velanthavalam in neighbouring Kerala, about 30 km from here, to watch it. However, he did not get a ticket and returned home late Friday night dejected, police said.
He ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling of a room in his house in the wee hours, they said.
The film has not been released in thestate after some theatre owners received threats from an outfit opposed to the producers.

Sorry to hear this but no one should ever take their life for anyone. If he could not watch it yesterday he could have some other time.

I have seen the movie yesterday but i do not want to review it fully because many of you guys have not watched it. If you ask me, the movie was quite lengthy i am sure AL vijay could have trimmed it and still could have got the point across very well. Vijay was outstanding but i feel that the screen play is too weak, had the movie been shorter it would have been racey. Oru thadava parkalam. 3/5.
