I am sorry, paapanaasam is a remake. So is thoongavanam. You are talking as if he is coming up with some original plot. BTW, Viswaroopam is another hero-villain story only too! The fact is you admire him and love him a lot, so even if he comes up with some remakes that looks so original to you. That's all!

No, absolutely nothing wrong with remakes. I did not say he always comes up with original plot - that is your interpretation. I said he does movies in his own terms and makes very different choices. Movies that are different and yet strike the mark in terms of box office, most times. Even Uttama Villain which did not do so well at the box office was quite refreshing, imo. Regarding Vishwaroopam, you are correct in that it is also a hero story but its context and execution was very different. Something like Enthiran which was different and enjoyable. Frankly, if KH is able to make 2-3 movies per year, it would truly be a golden period. He can then afford to try even more, different things.

See, it is very easy to pass subjective comments without much substantiation. It is hard to argue and settle anything. We will all end up wasting a lot of time, without achieving anything.

Well, I am not going to argue anything against your perspective. You can be yourself and believe in your judgment. Believe in your judgement about quality of a movie or an actor.

One of the best and correct point Venki..When it comes to BO they want only rajni..if kamal or these generation actors like Vijay,Ajith movies rocks at BO then ivingalukku vayiru eriyuthu..

rsubras, agree that rajini himself has agreed that he is many steps below kamal, in terms of acting talent and even other talent. But same time thats not the only thing rajini has openly expressed. there is more to it. in fact there is more to everything what both kamal and rajini does! what u see is just a outer most top layer which is the only layer visible for normal eyes. if u look deeply there are multiple things visible! but they are only for the keen eyes! iam glad to explain to the interested parties! ;)

நாயகன் படம் - நான் முன்னாடி இதை பதிவு செஞ்சிருக்கேன் - வெளியான முதல் ரெண்டு வாரம் - ஈ காக்கா theatre பக்கம் போகல - by sheer word of mouth படம் pickup ஆனது - those days, no stupid meaningless audio release functions, teaser trailer release functions on youtube, twitter and other social media - only through word of mouth - at a time when Reliance Cricket World Cup fever had not yet died down - a film by an unknown director/cameraman - totally anti-formulaic in every way - hero marrying a young prostitute being an integral part of the story!! unheard of in mother sentiment filled Tamil cinema..

Having missed it in theaters the first 100 days (no chance of getting tickets in 'Udhayam') - could watch it only after it was re-released 8-10 months later in Nagesh theater (paandi bazaar) - it was a packed house during the weekday!

Later on, while visiting Madurai, in a nondescript theater near Thirunagar, huge crowd on a sunday afternoon in front of the theater - thought it was some MGR/Sivaji film being re-run - the poster said it all - Nayagan!

'Aboorva Sago' வணிகம் plus popularity ரீதில இதையெல்லாம் தூக்கி சாப்பிட்டிருச்சு - அது வேற மேட்டர் - உதரணத்துக்கு - பெங்களூர் - ஹோசூர் areaவுல whenever it was re-released, it ran to packed houses for weeks!

Its quite funny that Rajni fans disown Shivaji to a certain extent. Rajni is very close to Shivaji in acting style than to other actos. It comes out very apparent in a lot of movies. In fact I have seen Shivaji more in Rajni than in Kamal, especially body language.

25 years of a Magnum Opus - Michael Madana Kama Rajan (MMKR) ★★★★★ :clap: :thumbsup:


There are only some movies which can claim to be downright rib-ticklingly funny on so many counts. Michael Madana Kama Rajan (MMKR) is one for the ages and can never be replicated.The kind of all round performance on virtually every front makes it firmly etched as one of Tamizh cinema's greatest creations. Seldom have films been so everlastingly entertaining and MMKR rightly falls into the place of all time great cinema.
It's been a quarter century since its release on Diwali day - 17th October 1990 but even to this day references are made with regard to the characterization's and dialogues. MMKR chestnuts are one of a kind and every now and then you would inevitably associate a fleeting presence of this movie in some form or the other sometimes even acting as an ice-breaker.
There are just too many things to marvel about MMKR ranging from the spectacular performances, timed to perfection dialogues, scintillating screenplay causing confusion aplenty, story with plethora of twists and turns, direction at pace with the events and the brilliant music and BGM. The subtlety and poise in each of the quadruplet roles portrayed by Kamal is breathtaking and each of the artists induce so much life to the characters and add to the fun quotient. The humorous dialogues and wordplay never ceases to invoke the funny bones, remember - Yaarukku kalyanam? Nekka? Nokka? Nekkum nokkumaa?, Indha Avinashi oru visuvaasi, Thripurasundari illai thiruttu sundari nee etc to just name a few. A pulse racing story line backed up a gripping screenplay and deftly handled direction causing nerve wracking excitement to go along with the pot boiling mixture of chaos, mayhem and hullabaloo over mistaken identity. And what fabulous array of songs in different dimensions making it such a memorable soundtrack and one cannot shy away from mentioning the precision of the re-recording which reigns supreme in elevating the scenes to a higher pedestal. It's seriously hard to pinpoint one flaw.
The synergy effect works perfectly in Michael Madana Kama Rajan where every individual in the movie is a hero but the movie ends up becoming the biggest hero of em all. A comic caper catering to the masses and the classes and to the young and old, this one's a cult classic in every way. Many of us grew up in the 90's with this film and for many of the movie buffs this laugh riot remains one of the most watched movies ever. One won't be surprised even if it has been seen over a triple digit times as it offers so much unlimited entertainment guaranteed.
25 years has passed since the saga of Michael Madana Kama Rajan and it's place as one of the undisputed comical giants of the silver screen will forever remain. Remembering everyone's favorite MMKR for completing a landmark silver jubilee. There are great movies and there is Michael Madana Kama Rajan - a riveting laughathon like never seen before and perhaps never ever after!.
Some tit-bits & trivia on MMKR:
● It was the second association of the Kamal Hassan and Crazy Mohan combo after the immensely successful Apoorva Sagotharargal (1989).
● MMKR was a Diwali release of 1990 and incidentally there were 5 other films releasing the same day with Ilaiyaraaja as the music director - Amman Kovil Thiruvizha, Mallu Vetti Minor, Puthu Paattu, Chatriyan and Sirayil Sila Raagangal
● Sundari Neeyum song was picturized by playing the song at twice the original speed in order for Kamal and Oorvasi to lip sync correctly.
● The song Sundari Neeyum was supposed to be sung by KJ Yesudas but dates played foil eventually leading to Kamal singing himself. Infact in an interesting tale, YG Mahendra actually congratulated Yesudas on the song and when KJY quipped that credit should go to Kamal, it left the former completely stumped.
● MMKR was perhaps the first Tamil or even Indian Film to feature a laptop as early as 1990.
● It was the first film to have 'Face Morphing Technology' in Tamil Film Industry.
● The Bheem boy character who is the body guard for Kamal Hassan is played by Praveen Kumar Sobti, an Indian athelete who was 6'7" and a Double gold medalist in discus throwing in the 1966 and 1970 Asian Games.
● There were 2 songs in the movie which were not shot but part of the audio records viz Aadi Pattam Thedi sung by Mano, Chitra & chorus and Maththa Poovu Oru Penna rendered by Chitra, both penned by Vaali.

Why you think so? Before Sarath stepping into movie industry, both Sivakumar and Radhika got to know each other and they had a good rapport. So, Sivakumar casual inquiring Radhika about how Sarath's loss had been managed. There is nothing wrong in asking something to your close circle. what use of just maintaining and not doing anything useful? during the roopam issue, 1st kamal faced problems from theater ppls. kamal didnot expect anyone to support him for this issue and dealt it single handedly and it got solved too. but then, when govt itself banned the movie, sarath as nadigar sangam chief, didnt move a stone. when vishal questioned this, sarath only got angry and said "இந்த இடத்துல இருந்து பார்த்தா தான் பிரச்சனை என்னன்னு புரியும்” thats exactly what vishal is trying to do now!:lol: and sarath absolutely didnt to nothing for roopam issue. he totally kept mum being afraid of J, then when situation came to do peace btw both parties, he came and praised TN govt( for solving the problem which is made by itself) இதுக்கு பேர் தான் பிரச்சனையை தீர்த்து வைக்குறதா?!? even if sarath had not come, the issue still wud have got solved

I take your point. Actually, more than the insults over the end, KH's support earlier to the Nasser/Vishal team meant a lot. Many times people say why KH is wasting time attending so many functions. But it helps broaden his reach and enlarge his friends/admirers/supporters. It is that support that lent credibility to the young team (Vishal & Karthi). Sarath was trying to portray these people as trouble makers and could have swayed the results his way if not for KH's support. It is only because he understood this, he began attacking Kamal in a more personal way. But is backfired even more. Sarath/Thanu were instrumental in pushing KH in a corner by extracting a written promise to do a cheaper film for Lingu on the eve of the release date. They created a lot of trouble for KH.

Frankly, I am not sure about Vishal either. He seems somewhat immature at times. Hope he learns to work under Nasser and not have internal fights within themselves in a few months/years!

It is very strange that despite the brazenness with which Sarath and co have been shown to have mishandled and misappropriated funds/land - this fact - though it came out in the open - is being poosi mazhuppified by everyone including the media once the election was over!

Sarath now wants Poochi Murugan to withdraw the case (according to that video of his doing the ujala balti!)- for all we know, through some background dealing - keeping in mind the larger interests of the showbiz world - PM might even be persuaded to withdraw the case by offering him monetary compensation - or even without that, Nassar and co might persuade him to do so, with a deal with Sarath Kumar to come clean with misdoings and then set things right from henceforth!

Thats the problem with showbiz - look at the Lingaa distributor-producers council mediation - absolute chaos - it began with 15 crores and ended with 50 plus crores loss compensation to the distributors - which if I understand it correctly is only part of the loss that was compensated - why this desperate effort to cover up a film's loss? I mean what will happen if the loss was declared openly? at the most, he would have gained credibility for honesty..

Btw, I have my theory about Rajini not taking a stand in this nadigar sangam election issue until the last moment - Rajini is in very good terms with Vijay Kumar and family - add to this the Dhanu-Sarath combo bailing him out from the Lingaa fiasco - he had to play his cards carefully and close to his chest for fearing of losing favor with that group (Sarath, VK and Radharavi) - perhaps thats why he announced his support to that group at the last minute!

And if he did so, knowing fully well the wrongdoings of Sarath and Radharavi, then he will likely get dragged into this - assuming this whole thing will blow up if Poochi Murugan chooses to pursue with the case..

Am assuming Rajini had no clue of what the maman-machan were doing, but Dhanu - being the business savvy guy he is - would have likely known about it - well i dont know the chemistry dynamics of these big names in showbiz, but am assuming Rajini is/was not privy to this whole 420 drama. Let us see..

Yes. It's the FEFSI issue during 1997. Actually, the "flower bokeh" issue was started by Parthiban. But, somehow, he patched up with Kamal later. The "kadhalae Kadhalae" was supposed to be directed by K.S.RaviKumar and he backed off. If I think back, that issue looked very threatening and almost entire film fraternity was against Kamal. All the tamil weeklies used to talk bad about Kamal. He didn't compromise with anyone. He stood firm and it got over.

Getting into the trouble and standing firm is Kamal's attitude. Watching the things bit nervously and admire later is the fan's attitude (Atleast mine). Got used to it.

Charu Haasan matter is sondha kudumba matter - from the days of split with Vaniji! even Suhasini (whose acting skills I admire, and whose bad-mouthing skills are puke-worthy) had major issues with Hassar. Gangai Amaran no clue about him and Hassar - given that GA every now and then bad mouths his illustrious elder brother, it is not surprising - in fact, I often find AR Rahman talking more like IR's younger brother than GA himself!

Why should the producer compensate? Profit and loss is a common thing in business. When a film has a good run, no distributor pays back the money he earned over the buying price to the producer or actor. Then on what moral grounds, does he ask for a compensation? If he feels a film is overpriced, he shouldn't have bought the film. When there are no buyers, the producers will automatically reduce the rate. You buy the film at higher rates because you know the star's potential and when u incur an occasional loss, u ask for compensation? Good. :)

It is revealed that stalwart Kamal Haasan is in talks with Director Gautham Menon for his next project. It is well-known that the same duo created wonders at the box-office with ‘Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu’.

A little birdie tell us that the director recently talked about an awesome story-line to Kamal Haasan, who gave his nod for it. Currently, Gautham Menon is buzzed to be working on its pre-production. ‘Kamal Haasan is known for his last minute retreats and unless he confirms officially, anything can happen with the project’ states a source close to the actor. It is left to guesses if Gautham Menon will direct Kamal Haasan’s next after ‘Thoongavanam’.

As already reported, Kamal Haasan might play an officer from the Narcotics Control Bureau wing in ‘Thoongavanam‘. It is also buzzed that the story line revolves around Ulaganayagan Kamal who goes in search of his son who is kidnapped by some goons, from the world of narcotics.

Though media reports indicated that the film is an official remake of the French blockbuster movie, ‘Sleepless Night’ it is buzzed that ‘Thoongavanam‘ is not a remake but only an adaptation and that it has been rewritten to suit the Indian audience most amicably. With two leading ladies, Trisha and Madhu Shalini in lead the flick is generating so much buzz already. This project features Prakash Raj, Madhu Shalini, Sampath Raj, Kishore and Asha Sharath in the lead roles. ‘Thoongavanam’ is also being simultaneously made in Telugu titled as ‘Cheekati Rajyam’.

Southern superstar Kamal Haasan on Friday met Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray here.

Mr. Haasan visited Mr. Thackeray at his residence at around 9:20 am and also met his wife Sharmila and daughter Urvashi.

The 60-year-old actor was welcomed with a shawl and bouquet.

“We are old friends and I just came to meet him...shake hands,” Mr. Hassan said.

“He (Raj Thackeray) welcomed Mr. Kamal Hassan with shawl and flowers. It was just a casual meeting... there was no agenda behind it. They are friends, so he (Hassan) just came to meet him (Thackeray),” MNS spokesperson Sandip Deshpande said.

The meeting between the two bigwigs lasted for at least half an hour.

It's confirmed, Kamal Haasan and Amala Akkineni, who have earlier acted together in blockbuster films including Sathya and Pesum Padam will be coming together for a Tamil-Telugu bilingual , which will be directed by award winning filmmaker, TK Rajeev Kumar.

At Hyderabad press meet, Kamal Haasan said "After a long time will be acting with Amala garu in an upcoming Tamil-Telugu bilingual. Zarina Wahab will be playing important role in the film. We are also in talks with another leading heroine, will reveal in coming days".

Kamal Haasan has also said that the film might also be simultaneously made in Hindi for which producers have already approached the actor. "We are planning to complete the film in three months.Official shooting will commence in January in USA", concluded Kamal Haasan.

As Shah Rukh Khan turned 50 on Monday the Tamil maverick actor Kamal Haasan paid the actor, who played a Pathan free of fee for Kamal in Hey Ram, lavish compliments for his qualities of humility, practicality and apolitical astuteness.

Says Kamal Haasan, "Probably Shah Rukh knew where he was headed. Probably he did not know where he'd end up on the ladder but was willing to climb till he could no more. With that mindset, humility is something you had to train on right from the word go. Shah Rukh first practiced on a quality that most successful people try to practice when it is too late. Early trainers like him suffer least humility lessons, at the top late trainers learn the hard way. Humility is taught through humiliating lessons."

Kamal is all praise for Shah Rukh's powers of apolitical articulation. "Shah Rukh spoke the best part of his mind for all to hear and the worst part he digested like food and the world never saw it. No! That does not make him a politician."

Kamal Haasan is extremely fond of Shah Rukh. They go back a long way to the time when 12 years ago, Shah Rukh agreed to do an extended cameo in Kamalji's Hey Ram. Kamal Haasan who played the role of the cop on the lookout for a serial killer in the Tamil hit Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu, expressed a keen interest in Shah Rukh playing the role in the film's Hindi version. When Gautham Menon, who understandably respects Kamalji opinion, asked the thespian who should play his role in the Hindi remake, Kamalji promptly gave Shah Rukh's name.

Kamal Haasan and Shah Rukh share a mutual admiration society from the time they worked together in Hey Ram in 2000. Shah Rukh had refused to charge any money for the film claiming that the honour of working with the great Kamal Haasan was reward enough.

Says Kamal Haasan appreciatively, "Shah Rukh is a true Pathan. A man of his words. I owe him a big favour."

For a party in Chennai to celebrate Kamal Haasan's career in 2013 Shah Rukh not only flew down he danced drenched in sweat from head to toe. Says Kamal Haasan, "He danced wonderfully on stage and it looked like he had come out of the bath and forgotten to dry."

The air conditioning at the posh luxury hotel had conked off leaving SRK swathed in sweat. Says Kamal, "It was every celebrity-bash's worst nightmare come true. The air conditioning at the hotel broke down. We were all left seething and simmering in the heat, helpless, angry and bitter. Shah Rukh was fully and formally dressed in a suit for the occasion. His condition in the heat was indescribable. But look at this entertainer! He pulled off his coat, jumped on to the stage and danced, although he dripped sweat like he had just had a bath."

Shah Rukh, we are told, was pretty much completely drained out and on the verge of dehydration after his sweat-soaked performance. "But he didn't care. At that moment he forgot all his discomfort. It was just Shah Rukh Saab (that's how Kamal Haasan addresses his junior colleague) and the stage. He is a natural-born entertainer," says Kamal Haasan.

Says Kamal emotionally, "Shah Rukh is an artiste at heart and I wish my younger brother stays that way. I wish that success like it always has will sit very lightly on his shoulder. Wishing more success to him will induce only emotional sniffles but then that might be only from his detractors. Old friends like me never tire of his success. More to you, Brother, more of all that you love in life."

Jallikattu should not go extinct due to modern western thoughts: Kamal Haasan

Chennai: With festival of harvest Pongal round the corner in Tamil Nadu and demands pouring in from several groups to lift the ban on jallikattu (taming of bulls), actor Kamal Haasan also raised his voice in support of the valorous sport.

Speaking at the inauguration of a photo exhibition in the city on Monday, the veteran star said, “Many think that the bull taming sport is one where animals are ill-treated. It may be true in countries like Spain or Italy, which are famous for bullfights where the practice of killing the bulls is followed. I have watched those sports. But it is not the case here. Even a small scratch on the cattle with a pin would end up disqualifying you from the game”.

The actor who also acted as a bull tamer in his earlier film Virumaandi said, “Though it is called jallikattu, its original Tamil name is ‘Earu Vazhvudhal’. The bulls have to be tamed embracing them with a knack and not tearing their horns apart or killing them. It is our traditional valorous sport. The sport should not go extinct because of the influence of modern Western thoughts. The culture and legacy of Tamil Nadu should continue. It is also a tourist attraction. Hence, I request those influential people to consider these facts and help remove the ban on jallikattu”.

Agree with the intent behind his opinion, but the age old tradition is now polluted and the intent is now more on winning by hook or crook and not a display of might as was earlier..... in the process, the bulls are drugged and gets subjected to other cruelties
