Forgive me, but I never knew of that word Lambretta before you used it on forum. And even then, I never knew that name related to your scooter you had in your avatar. That's the truth Lamby and I am sorry about it. Now you know how bad I had felt. :( :(

Digression:
Rachel,
You too thought of sheep when you see lamby? That's exactly what had happened to em - was thinking about a white fluffy pet one and Lamby was shocked and he said he quenched when he found ou the meaning behind Lammy (see hubber's event thread). At least I am not alone in such those thoughts to be taken strangely.
what is it?
Well I knew it as short for Lambretta in the west:
http://images.google.co.in/images?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&q=series+2+lammy&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images
But she knew it as......well, shez already mentioned it....
what do u mean? sheep?

Dign.
Yes Lamby, you used that word or something like that in either the Hubbers event thread or the shame thread - where I called you "Shy".
It's time to forget it, just mentioned it since Rachel came up with something similar.

I read your reply regarding my comments on KERALA SAREE.
To be precise,
It is a light yellow coloured saree with RED colour silk border. You can see this in many Malayalam movies. Actresses will be using this one in temple scenes etc :P
I think it is one type of saree which could kill everybody seeing such women :P I mean a perfect HOMELY, RICH LOOKING one indeed. :P

Talking about Sarees, the combined total of Sarees that both my Mum and Sister have is 136 and they are planning to buy some more. Although i hope the reason why they have sarees is to look different on each occasion they go, can someone explain to me why such a huge number of sarees is needed?
And on sarees, My mum looks at the design on the munthani to see if it fits the saree usually and my sister has the same taste as my mother. How do any other girls/women choose sarees? Oru explanation koduthaenge na yenodeiya future pondadiku saree vanga uthavum.

18th April 2006, 06:26 AM
Hulkster :
It really depends on each woman's taste.
My mom and I like soft, light material. Even when we're shopping for silk sarees, this is the criteria we use. And, I like small borders. And, mundhanai is very important as sometimes the colour combinations may not be striking/matching. Some have beautiful pattern on the body but mundhanai would be very plain and vice versa......some people like white zarugai, some like it in gold...so it all depends really.....
Hulkster
18th April 2006, 06:30 AM
So i other words the mundhanai must suit the pattern or colour of the body of the saree?
Yeah i too like soft, light material of the sarees as the thin and crass ones feel abit uncomfortable(im imagining if i wore a saree).
NM
18th April 2006, 07:06 AM
yup...definately. I saw this beautiful dark purple saree once but the mundhanai was so disappointing! they had mixed dark purple and black !! it didn't bring out the dign on the mudhanai at all!

ok, how do i choose saree: material depends on the occasion the saree is for and who the saree is for. if it's for my mum, silk, printed silk, kanchi silk, etc for parties and cottons for everyday wear. if it's for my sis, then georgette, chiffon.
design: i like embroidery very much, esp embroidery on chiffon. but i search for nice embroidery in any material, including silk and cotton.
then, i also like choosing the best out of the latest designs. it's very important to keep up with the latest fashion! but i also try to get sth that is of the latest design but slightly different from the rest, usually from designer pieces, so that one can stand out from the rest!
ok, can;t think of what else abt sarees other than material and design.
for blouses, i like to get sarees with blouse material included so that it matches the saree and i only like plain stitching of blouses, no windows, strings etc. but of course the blouse will have design matching the saree.

OK I think I cud give a tip here :) - wen u buy a cotton Saree, inskirt or even blouse, its sure to hav too much dye in it....so as soon as u take it home after buying, soak it in a bucket of water for a while, b4 u wear it for the 1st time.....my mother wud do tat wenever she bought cotton sarees/inskirts/blouses......let it loose the unwanted dye....cos if u wear it straightaway, the colour from the dye is sure to stick on to ur body.....

Hmm.....but wud cotton come under 'latest' fashion? :?
could as well actually, depends on the design. embroidery and stuff. but mostly, if it's cotton, it doesn't have to be latest fashion cos only for daily wear. i think vengatagiri, magalgiri designs are nice. and bengal cotton? no, actually, i think it's called sth else. i've to ask my cousin sis. i forgot the name. the designs in that type is really nice. and there's also new stuff in silk cotton as i was saying the other day (haven't found the name of that saree as well), but that is not pure cotton.

In Malaysia, there's a trend among the Malays to buy sarees (the soft versions) and stitch them into 'baju kurung', which is their traditional dress ( along skirt with an equally long, loose top). I have made salwar kameez using some old sarees, which are of soft material with small borders. They look georgeus!!

BG and Lamby : thanks for the explanation on polycot.... :D
Ur welcome! :D Under 'normal' circustances, the explaining shud've been the other way round I guess!
Lamby thambi :
I made them into salwar kameez because i just didn't have the heart to give those sarees away and we can possibly wear them cos' they're old..so, SK was the best option! :D
Yea, I understand....tats y I said "on the bright side", they wer old neways.....! :)
Well, in Singapore I noticed tat most who buy even brand new Sarees readily cut them up & make them into Salwars, (& even tops, Sarongs etc...)....u may think this a bit too much but wen I realised this happening, I didnt feel like living ther nemore! :(
But, nowadays, i don't do that anymore cos' it's so difficult to find a very good tailor. We just give them away to the needy... :D
Hmm.......well, I think I'll do the same IF my (future) wife isnt int'd in Sarees.....I currently hav all Sarees tat I originally bought for my mom from Singapore, sum of wich she doesnt wear since my father's no more.....so if my wife doesnt want them (or ne Saree), I wudnt like to hav them lying at home wher they may be cut into sumthing else! :x......so I'd think it better give them away to those who really like to wear them.....
*digr- say, ur avtaar reminds me of the song "Nenaivo oru paravai" (Sikappu Rojakkal, 1978)......was jus listening to tat song this morning....:D

no longer the case nowadays. sarees in india are a lot better, not only in material, also in designs. faster moving market so you keep getting loads of new designs all the time.

they're trying to show as much of the elaborate design as possible, most of which will be in the pallu. so they have the different ways of wearing the saree such that the pallu comes infront. they want u to look at the saree design after all. i thought the blue one in the party silks had a really nice design. if the girl had been wearing it in the normal way, we wouldn't have been able to see it.
and abt the fancy silks, i think it might be a loose name and not really silk.

speaking of website pics on sarees the other day i got a link about new blouse designs....besides i think two pics all the others had the pallu twisted around their arm...so that the blouse could show....what's the point then? All the blouses are sooo high and have windows, strings, gems. mirrors...sometimes it really takes away the elegance of the saree itself...so it looks dowdy...and one or two or those beads, gems fall off will you wear it again? my seamstress is always going on about why you so plain...wasting money on simple sarees  Though sometimes I kinda feel left out cause I never know what the latest trend is...i just buy what i like whatever the trend is...but you know people always have to comment that you are not conforming :?

Actually Fire i didn't post that site for the sarees per se, nor am i advocating buying those or other saree online I was rather pointing out the the fabric that Lambretta kept referring to, I don't really like any of them...really you can't tell the difference between the crepe silk and say chiffon/silk/nylon/satin? i can kind of tell that it's different. but there are so many different materials nowadays. so it's hard to tell which one it is. i mean of course chiffon is obvious cos it's transclucent, satin is very smooth. but u can't really tell too much abt the rest. u can get all kinds of silk as well. so i don't see how pix can be any true representation of the material.

Esp. the red & blue (in this case I dont mean the Sarees only!).....
But I wonder y the blue Saree's (page 1) referred to as Chiffon? :?
Doesnt look so at all......in the bigger version of the pic. it seems very much Crepe only....
Rather the green one & the Cream w/ dark green design look like chiffon ones; they r rather translucent.....
And the first site I've seen showing high-necked blouses!
I wonder if they r coming back into fashion (they did make a comeback once, in the '80s)......:)

Nope, those r different.....I think they r called tissue silk or sumthing.....I dont like tat texture much either! :)
anyways here's link showing what the fabric looks like:

Yea those r crepe ones, except for the orange one.....the wrinkled design makes it look more like a tissue silk one.....
