i don't have high hopes on this album. Engae Pogudho Vaanam sounded more like a desperate attempt to recreate oruvan oruvan magic. And it only worked to an extent because of SPB.

Hope I am wrong !

Oh Btw Diamond Pearl ! Question You have written a line "Aagaayam Thaduthal Paayum Paravai Aavom" i thought only mammals and fish can jump even birds too in mid air ?

Atleast Vairamuthu refered to a living thing, no !

Paayum here is not leap or jump, but soaring (as in soaring eagle).
And Bharathi's paayum refers to the flood of light.

Its pure poetry.

So Soaring doesn't have another word in Tamil ?

The closest tamil word that I can come up with is Ezhu (like in Nenje Ezhu [but here it means rise - as in spiritual rising]).
"Filght of a bird" in tamil, I have no idea.

Aagaayam Thaduthal Paayum Paravai Aavom
Basically the song emphasises on over-coming obstacles. Just like in Panchatantra tales, the animals are assosiated to produce a better understanding. As per your above comment - the poem can be coined as "Aagaayam Thaduthal, Naam Paravai Pol Ezhuvom". But when these poems take a poetical structure with a musical tune assosiated to it, the whole lyrics has to be fine tuned to satisfy both the melody & the rythm as well as the core message it tries to convey (without repetition of words - in this case Naam which is used in the thematic stanza). Thus it is coined as you hear it, giving it some more beauty.

I will wait for Varaimuthu to sprinkle some words on these lyrics. He is the one who crisply details his poems. Even in Sivaji - Va ji Va ji song - "Pala kavignargal karpanai thavidupodi" was explained thouroughly by Vairamuthu and how Shankar gave a touch on the visuals by making a smoke of dust rising from Rajini when he slaps his laps, symbolising the Thavidupodi. The duet between the lyrics and the visuals were excellent. These are high rates of imagination.

Thanxs Mappi, ARR First songlaa - In "Nenje" replace first to letter with "Ku" its gives much more spiritual rising. Shankar's most movies are Thavidupodi, not that song alone

I agree on melody & the rythm structure part.

Honest opinion anand sir, Ragaman garu tried too hard to mix world music in to 1 song.. WCM , American southern gospel chorus , Uilleann pipes there is only so much you can mix in maida mavu . I personally would think Na.Muthukumar would have been better choice. Again what do I know!!

Its unbelievable how many songs/BGM/tunes are simply plagiarized from the west. I would say trend started in the 70's. Lots of Hindi movie songs (much more than tamil) were simply ripped from the West. Many would have not heard the original then but with modern day internet, it becomes more easy to find. There was a hindi movie I recall that had Terminator tune when salman was walking!

'Kochadaiiyaan' vs 'Vishwaroopam 2'

In a hundred years of cinema, here comes the classic example of clash of the titans. Hold your breath for the release of the two most expected films of the year - Superstar's 'Kochadaiiyaan' and Ulaga Nayagan's 'Vishwaroopm 2' - which is rumoured to hit the big screens on the same day! While 'Vishwaroopam 2' has been wrapped up and parcelled off to post production work, progress on the film seems to happen before expected deadline. There was a news doing the rounds that the audio and trailer launch of 'Vishwaroopam 2' will happen by next month. On the other hand, 'Kochadaiiyaan' seems to be taking slightly more time than anticipated, in getting the perfect output on film. Audio launch of the movie was expected to happen this month already, but it has been pushed to the next month now, inevitably. Further, this has spread the belief that the film will hit the screens only by the third week of December, later than the initial plan on December 12th, Rajinikanth's birthday.

But this delay has driven the distributors to rejoice, as they look forward to the release of both the films on the same day. Normally, the distributors would not want movies of big heroes to release on the same day, as it may lead to unnecessary clash and stiff decisions. But the story is not the same when it is between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. A competition between the two is a welcome sight to watch, as both films will fare equally brilliant from release. Encashing the mass value these two heroes of Kollywood hold, the entire film fraternity is awaiting in a nail biting run-up to the release of the two films, much awaited to be on the same day.

In the making for a good lot of demanding months, the magnum opus of Kollywood are pushed sadly to next year, making us wait some more time. But not for too long though, as Superstar's 'Kochadaiyaan' and Ulaga Nayagan's 'Vishwaroopam 2' are to hit the screens in early 2014, as early as Pongal! So are they locking horns with release clash of the younger heroes - Ajith's 'Veeram' and Vijay's 'Jilla'? We don't know yet, but may be even not.

Though the big budgets are looking forward to encash on the festive season, they may as well give the other releases a breather, to lock horns on Republic Day. While 'Kochadaiyaan' may in fact hit the screens for Pongal, 'Vishwaroopam 2' is most likely to utilize January 26th for a worldwide release. Sounds familiar? Well, that is when the first part was released, exactly a year earlier. All said and done, there is a lot to look out for in January 2014, giving the year a jump start.

SamaNam and Bouththam (Budhism) were anti-vedic religion and their influence in the thamizh naadu was only natural since their spread in Norther parts of Indian sub continent was very strong during the pre-christian and early christian era. That the vedism in thamizh naadu could not take root during Sangam era until the end of it, was an obvious fact. The spread of Jainism and Budhism as an anti thesis to the (then) campaigning of Vedic "varna" religion was a natural / expected phenomenon.

That the Jains now do not evince any interest in anti-vedism of their basic roots - would not mean that Jainism was not found as an anti-dote to the poison of Vedic invader religion. So it goes for Budhism too.

budhdha was the First periyar and Periya was only the 20th century budhdha - which would be quite obvious to any keen reader/thinkers.

Vedism, jainism and Budhdhism - none of these had their origin in thamizhnaadu. All of them are vanthERi theologies. But the Latter 2 were necessary to fight the first one - during that time period.

KuRumbar, vELir and other ancient tribes of thamizh naadu - who were sought to be marginalised by the increasingly Vedism following Kings - rebelled against the injust Varna religion which was imposed upon the thamizh country and the Life and Social setup. They used and embraced the then - stridently antii-vedic religions of Jainism (samaNam) and Budhism to fight vedic villains. This is the correct interpretation of the end of Latter Sangam era.

kOchadaiyaan aka nedunchadaiyaan - a latter 6th Century CE pandiyan King was the one who - again gave a refreshing re-birth to the Varna vedic pArpana society in thamizhnaadu - by reclaiming the lands from the common pool of agriocultural lands owned by all the people and giving them as "சதுர் வேதி மங்கலம்" lands which were given as a Free gift to the pArpanars for their "divine" qualities!

Thamizh country was never completely conquered and there in lies the tragedy of the Aryan lies!

Honestly Vadivelu spoiled his name during the last Election by opening his big mouth too much. But it has nothing to do with Cinema. It was all politics.

He is unique and one of the greatest talents Tamil cinema has seen till today. Shutting him down when is healthy and ready to entertain us is unacceptable.

Nagesh resurrected in Kochadaiyaan

The limitless opportunities and options that the motion capture technology can provide will be well on display in Superstar Rajinikanth’s Kochadaiyaan. The film’s director Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin recently revealed that technology has enabled them to revive the late great thespian Nagesh in her animated magnum opus.

It is learnt that an actor was made to re-enact the classic mannerisms of Nagesh, who had passed away in 2009, and the movements have been translated in a life-like manner on screen for the character.

When the inevitable comparisons to similar projects such as Tintin and Avatar cropped up, Soundarya offered a valid response by saying that the characters of Tintin and Avatar were imaginary but Kochadaiyaan had the massive task of recreating real life personalities, and even with those challenges the film’s production period has been swift, she said. She went on to assert that the characters will appear like their real selves in the film.

Kochadaiyaan’s audio, composed by AR Rahman, is set to be launched in a grand manner on March 9th with the biggest stars in the country assembling for the occasion.

IMO - I prefer Immediate Music over Two steps from Hell.
Reason for preference : The choir and the orchestra are much richer in Immediate. Two steps sound very cinematic, given their choice of film they worked for.
But they both are awesome.

Watched Reinhard Klooss's Tarzan last week. Amazing, the motion capture was like flawless when it meets the eyes. Tarzan's hair is real beauty, thought it was well conceived and executed. May not my expection be such high, but Kochadaiyan can come up with something similar.

Even the forehead in this picture does not match with the other pictures released earlier

Yes, the images should have undergone several corrections, its an enormous job. I still don't have any clue over the processing details and other post production amelioration technics carried out by the team for this specfic TFI venture, wish they give some striking informations on that during thier promotions & interviews.

Altogether its getting more appeling day to day.

Blaring horns, the rich strings section, resounding percussion and a well-utilized chorus – Engae Pogudho Vaanam is probably the most majestic a Rajni-SPB song has ever sounded. All that majesty still doesn’t make the song best in the category however; the song is fraught with too much heard-before-ness for that. Nevertheless, it is heartening to hear SPB’s voice teeming with energy and flawless as ever, the man hadn’t been looking that great of late. Rahman later builds on the title hook of the song, accentuating the period feel around it to produce the pensive instrumental piece called Rana’s Dream, played by the London Sessions Orchestra. In keeping with the dream theme, the composer keeps it tranquil – strings and woodwinds washing over each other in an enchanting fashion. The title song is another elaborately orchestrated piece, sung by the Kochadaiiyan Ensemble. It is the orchestration that rules this one though, particularly the multifarious percussion (chenda, edaykka, pakhawaj, temple bells to name a few) that form a killer combination with the deftly incorporated synth elements. Maattram Ondrudhaan Maaraadhadhu is essentially Rajinikanth rendering some punch-lines to an orchestral background, with the occasional recess filled by Haricharan and chorus’ singing. In the end there is a minute-long konnakol session by Umashankar VInayakram which doesn’t seem to bear any particular connection to what preceded it, maybe the visuals turn out more explanatory.

The guitar strains that kick off Medhuvaagathaan sounds almost exactly like the opening of Maahi Ve! Fortunately that phase passes soon enough, revealing a beautiful kalyani/yaman-based melodic piece instead. With SPB and Sadhana Sargam doing a fab job on vocals as well, there are times when you are taken back to the ARR music of 90s. Seeing the name Latha Rajinikanth on the vocal credits, I wasn’t very sure about Manappennin Sathiyam. The lady however does manage an endearingly earnest rendition of the charming melody that is predominantly dwijawanthi raaga, with the occasional hint of hamir kalyani (I think) in places. The other highlight of the song is the lovely use of naadaswaram. The male version titled Manamaganini Sathiyam has Haricharan in the lead, and expectedly does a better job of the singing. Idhayam is a curious composition, the most classically-oriented and period-sounding of all – starting off on panthuvarali and goes through multiple raaga shifts before closing with shivaranjani (both raaga details supplied by @vijaynarain). The arrangement is clearly Hindustani-based, which adds to the intrigue. If there is one person who well and truly owns the song though, that is Chinmayee, making what is undeniably a complicated rendition sound like a walk in the park. The male vocal credits have been given only to Srinivas (haven’t seen that name on ARR’s vocal credits in a long time) though there seem to be others. Finally there is Karma Veeran, another grandiose anthemic piece sung by the composer and sister A R Raihanah. But this one too winds up as one of the weaker songs of the soundtrack, mainly owing to two reasons – the déjà vu factor, and Raihanah’s singing.

When I started listening to Kochadaiiyaan I wasn’t pinning a lot of hopes on it. But I am delighted to have been proven wrong. Easily one of the best soundtracks that A R Rahman has produced for the Superstar!

Music Aloud Rating: 9/10

Top Recos: Medhuvaagathaan, Manamaganini Sathiyam, Idhayam, Engal Kochadaiiyaan

KOCHADAIYAAN SONGS REVIEW

Kochadaiiyaan is the upcoming animated magnum opus featuring Superstar Rajinikanth. Directed by his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin, the film boasts of a high profile ensemble cast that includes Deepika Padukone, Sarath Kumar, Shobana and Jackie Shroff to name a few. Music is by A.R.Rahman with Vairamuthu and Vaalee sharing the song writing credits.
Engae Pogudho Vaanam
Singers: SP Balasubramaniam
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

The album begins with grandeur featuring vocals by the living legend S. P. Balasubramaniam and fantastic orchestration equipped with superior string section, violin, trumpets and celtic styled interludes. The track is like a musical journey through a glorious life of a warrior, playing along with Rajini's image and philosophies, put to words by Vairamuthu. S. P. Balasubramaniam is effortless in his higher octave singing and marks the beginning of an enthralling album.
Medhuvaagathaan
Singers: Sadhana Sargam, SP Balasubramaniam
Lyrics: Vaalee

After a power packed opening track, it is time to slow down with a beautiful melody laden with sitar, and mellowed rhythm. The mellifluous voice of Sadhana Sargam takes the track forward with flawless perfection and S. P. Balasubramaniam wonderfully joins the duet. The track gains its momentum as it moves forward with mridangam, string section and relaxing bass work. It has a sparkling Indian flavor throughout its progress making it a welcome change in the era of modern film music!
Maattram Ondrudhaan Maaraadhadhu
Singers: Haricharan, Rajinikanth, V. Umashankar
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

A heroic track arrives next with appealing orchestration housing a fresh voice of Haricharan in the midst of a progressive rhythm. The track keeps the listeners alert and highly engaged with the dialogues of Superstar Rajnikanth in his distinct voice. Ultimately, the crafty orchestration and uplifting chorus can only play second fiddle to this Rajini show !
Manappenin Sathiyam
Singers: Latha Rajinikanth
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

An amazing traditional track arrives with flashes of breezy piano and touches upon beautiful raagas like Raag Kaapi, Desh and Maand- some of A.R.Rahman’s favorites right from his Roja days. The presence of Naadaswaram in the interlude adds yet another highlight to the track. Latha Rajnikanth supports this classy composition with a great performance.
Idhayam
Singers: Chinmayi, Srinivas
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

An eerie track composed in Carnatic style strikes a balance between danger and romance. This is perhaps one of the most challenging tracks for Chinmayi to perform for the complex layers and the demanding nature of the composition. Srinivas too is up to the task with his own masterful voice. The track itself can be seen as one of Rahman's best efforts in recent times to push the boundaries of Carnatic tunes.
Engal Kochadaiiyaan
Singers: Kochadaiiyaan Ensemble
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

A racy track with commanding chorus and an orchestra with a plethora of historic instruments arrives now. The track carries an undercurrent energy and creates an imaginary ambience in the mind of the listener. The track is exceptionally woven with traditional instruments alongside the bursts of distortion. The track is best approached as a background theme.
Manamaganin Sathiyam
Singers: Haricharan
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

The lilting song Manappenin Sathiyam arrives again in the voice of Haricharan sounding as mellifluous as the previous version. While the first version was soothing, Haricharan’s earthy voice makes his version very reaffirming . A special mention for the fantastic lyrical contributions of Vairamuthu throughout this album.
Rana's Dream
Singers: Londons Session Orchestra
Lyrics:

The only instrumental track on the album is performed by the internationally acclaimed London Symphony Orchestra. It travels like a dream world with pan flute, mellowed string section, viola, and plenty more, all playing a splendid rearrangement of 'Engae Pogudho Vaanam'. The London Symphony Orchestra certainly brings a global flavor with their unfaltering skills.
Karma Veeran
Singers: AR Rahman, AR Raihanah
Lyrics: Vairamuthu

The grand finale begins with A.R.Reihana’s booming voice in higher octave and a sea of string section. A.R.Rahman joins the feast in this heavenly composition with his own inimitable and impactful best. The interludes are sure to leave the listener enthralled. The track spells heroism by means of its confident presentation and breathtaking orchestration.
Verdict: Mozart of Madras' show of magnificence and mastery.

Or this movie gets extremely good collection and gets a good market for computer animation in the future. It's well animated and designed for what they had to work with. Here is hoping for more animated movies to follow after the success of this film.

Listened to the songs. Excluding Kuselan, this is the very first Rajini movie album where there are no catchy songs for Rajini's mass IMO. In that aspect, its a let down. How well the free flowing Rahman tunes fit into the screen play, let me wait and see. To me, Idhayam is the only winner so far. That too, it could have been much better if Chinmayi replaced with any highly talented singers like Chitra/Shreya. Rahman nowadays shown interest in composing songs without proper structure with strings background. But when comes to lyrical portions for such compositions, the chemistry between sandham and lyrics often lose their scope/merits. Somehow, I find a big listening resistance in me. And, last but not least, I am not impressed with Vairamuthu's words. Liked here and there but overall, its a letdown as the lyricist often tries to mix-up with template based phrases and jumping from past/present to present/past and his "hey! look at my writing!" skill only exposed.

My take:

For the masses currently enjoying GVP, Imaan, Harris' hits, this album will definitely sound impressive as it's musically rich and has some grandeur in it. For the rest of us, the songs are unfortunately stale. The dwijavathi's, pooriya dhanashree's, vasantha's... we have heard them before. They only give the deja vu feeling as someone wrote above. Where are you the daring, innovative ARR? Miss you terribly in this album..

The HCARR fans can only take solace in the fact that the album is much better than the previous Rajni-ARR combos. The songs will grow on them as I don't see any other musically attractive album of the this caliber being churned by anyone else these days. But my worry is: the cartoonish picturisation may spoil everything. So.. relish the songs till the movie released. At the sametime, hope that I am wrong about the movie turning to be comical for the wrong reasons, but actually is liked by everyone and the songs become chartbusters.. Still it won't change my personal disappointment thought. I guess I'll wait for some innovations/experimentations in the next ARR album, and sincerely hope that he hasn't plateaued.

computer animation

There is a wonderful book on Motion Capture and computer animation that I consulted to learn more on Kochadaiiyaan :

Understanding Motion Capture for Computer Animation by Alberto Menache

Actually there are 2 editions - 1999 (extended title - "and video games") and 2011. Basicially the 2nd edition has additional material covering movies till Avatar.

If you have a profession with computers, its a easy read, for the others it would be interesting too. The first 4 chapters are a breeze which talks about the definitions, origins, inventions, usage, Studios, terminologies, graphics, photos, pictures, diagrams and ofcoarse motion capture and computer animation in detail. From chapter 5, its gets mathematical talking about rotational and translational data with matrix including in detail capturing and feeding into computer the whole part of the body - vertebral, torso, shoulder, arm, leg, foot and bones - with illustrative diagrams. You can omitt the maths if you are not into it and you will miss nothing at all.

Funny thing is the picture [Chapter 1 pg.14 Figure 1.4 - 1992 motion capture for a commercial]. How much Motion Capture Technology has improved in 2 decades - amazing.

Found this book very interesting which allows to follow Kochadaiiyaan's visuals easily. Kochadaiiyaan team have put an enormous effort and all my appreciations just for that alone and I wish the whole team both commercial success and critical acclaim.

Kochadaiiyaan Music Review

Kochadaiiyaan is ARR’s sixth straight album for Rajinikanth. The combo has delivered phenomenal hits time and again and kept every music lover up on their toes before the album release. That’s the hype and gravity Kochadaiiyaan album is surrounded with. Add to this, the grandest audio launch planned with SRK as the Chief Guest and bigwigs in the industry joining the team.

The film has 9 soundtracks and lyrics by Vairamuthu and Vaali. Vairamuthu has written 8 songs of the album. It is worth mentioning that it is for Muthu, the triumvirate ARR, Rajinikanth and Vairamuthu joined hands for the first time.

Engae PogudhoVaanam

Whenever ARR scores music for Rajinikanth, probably the most anticipated track of the album would be the one sung by SPB. And, EngaePogudhoVaanam justifies that cultism. Reverberating strings, rich percussions and a commanding voice of SPB – WIN! One of the best soundtracks ARR has ever produced for Rajini – SPB (Or THE best?). This is the kind of soundtrack that would give fans adrenaline rush in theatres. A sealed success!

Manappenin Sathiyam

A beautiful rendition by LathaRajinikanth. Total earworm material this one. Latha’s voice sounds as divine as it was in her popularKadavul Ullame in AnbullaRajnikanth. The song’s arrangements took me back to an old Rajinikanth song composed by Ilayaraja for Maniratnam. Remember the chorus section “Kuniththa Puruvamum Kovvaich Chevvaayil Kumizh Sirippum” in Rakkamma Kaiya Thattusong in Thalapathi? Manappenin Sathiyam is quite reminiscent of that track.

Manamaganin Sathiyam

ARR’s love for Haricharan continues. Manamaganin Sathiyamis yet another feather in the cap for Haricharan’s solo renditions. Lovely singing!

Rana’s Dream (Instrumental)

Rana’s Dream is the reflective instrumental version of Engae Pogutho Vaanamby London Sessions Orchestra. If there’s one soundtrack that stridentlyresembles the authenticity of the film’s genre, this is it.

EngalKochadaiiyaan

Engal Kochadaiiyaan sung by the Kochadaiiyaan Ensemble is perhaps the passable track in the album. Resonating orchestrations and occasional hymns in the background should serve well the visuals I believe.

Karma Veeran

Etherealvoice of Rahman and a soulful prelude to the song by AR Raihanah makes for a wonderful start to the song. The everlasting vocals sound repetitive for the album. Nevertheless, as all ARR songs do, this one might just take its time to grow on you.

Maattram Ondrudhaan Maaraadhadhu

This song is yet another substantiation that Vairamuthu is one of the most powerful writers in Tamil cinema. This is Rajinikanth’s punch-line rendition equivalent to Kamal Haasan’s poetic Kavithai song in ManmadhamAmbu. Haricharan manages well in the occasional vocals to complement Rajinikanth.

Medhuvaagathaan

A lovely melody sung by the evergreen duo SPB-SadhanaSargam and the song is written by the maverick late Vaali. Last time, he penned for Rajinikanth in Sivaji for the Athiradee song, a quintessential classic. Finally, SPB has made a flawless comeback after a lull. Sadhana sounds beautiful as always. The song is a reminiscence of Rahman in the 90s.

Idhayam

How do you make a pathos a killer? Make Chinmayee deliver it. Such an effortless singing this. One of our recommended tracks of the album. After a long time, Srinivas makes a comeback in an ARR album, a forgettable comeback.

RR, Venkkiram (ofcoarse others),

Could you please talk more about the song "Manamaganini Sathiyam" (male version), please ?
Basically I need to know the carnatic music/tala structure & instruments to which I am quite new (and trying to learn its theories).

Well, firstly, is it even Carnatic ?

Thanks.

EDIT :

Let me give you some instance of what I am thinking :
The song basically uses the Lullaby for Kid Krishna (famous concept in Carnatic Music) and masks it with romantic lyrics, still keeping the prime words that describe Krishna intact like :

'Kanney' into Kanner
Sathiyam Sathiyam Idhu Sathiyamae
Oru Kuzhanthai Polae Oru Vairam Polae
Unnidam Thorpaen
Artha Jaamam Thirudan Pola
etc...

The tune floats between diffrent rythms and the melody is quite soothing. This is here it has a fine Carnatic touch, but I am unable to infer it keeping in mind the choice of instruments. If I am not mistaken, the wind instrument that I hear is shenai. If so, its not carnatic but hindustani and add in the make over to the theme of the song it becomes a variety genre. I am more interested to know the carnatic touch (if its there) and its flow in the song => Basically, how to make it out ?

Tried really hard to like Kochaidaiyaan songs. Songs might be pretty good to others, but they certainly are not my cup of tea. Again I didnt like minsaarakanavu songs when I heard them first coupele of times, they ended up becoming major hits and earned A.R Rahman and singers awards.

mappi,

Yes it's carnatic style - predominantly. The raga being dwijavanthi/jaijaivanthi, the hindustani touches also appear. (Film songs-la ithellaam saatharanamappa.) I think the instrument is nadhaswaram - not shenai. Note that the song is about marriage vows.

I am not sure why you think it's about krishna lullaby. May be it's just the raga that has such a feel. You may want to check out 'akilandeswari' (esp. the one by MSS.) and confirm yourself.

Cheers..

RR,

Nadaswaram it is, the basic problem I had was the depth given by ARR in the recording, which sounded like more increase in the pitch/frequency and I fell for that.

The tune and the tempo made me fell that it sounds like a Krishna Puranam (a Lullaby), and please accept my limited knowledge in this area.

MSS akilandeswari was awesome (for those interested : /watch?v=ZyIJbRdX0lg), I can get its layers in Manamaganini Sathiyam.

With respect to this song, hearing it after a bit of R&D about the raagas you had specified, plus more about the instrumental setup, I feel that ARR had done enough justice & mix to this song. Lately I am picking up such songs and trying to know more about them.

Here it is :

Ragam: Dwijavanthi (Jaijaivanthi in Hindustani)
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=572492&songID=8281783

Quite peaceful and rich, trying to register it so that I can capture it else where.

Firstly, miss Janaki esp. during Rana Yen Rana ... Kodi venduma Kodai venduma
Secondly, SPB rendering is absolutely fantastic.

A wonderful duet with a nice concept - a converse between a warrior & the charm with whom he fights to win the love battle. The lyrics concentrates on the domination over each other, and the approach of these 2 poles : Power and Beauty. This deadly combination is well penned by Vaali where he uses mostly war based vocabulary for the male and tender styled words for the peacock beauty. The chorus speaks about their reunion.

Facinating choice of words used for the pair :

Male : Adhi Andham Adi Vantha Jothi Intha Azhagan
Female : Aegan Pondra Malarthaan Ival Allava

The introduction of SPB was awesome :

Mazhai Megamaai Irangi Vanthaenae
Un Vizhiyin Orathil Vizhunthuvitaenae Naan
[SPB intro] Medhuvaagathaan ... pure CLASS

... then there is this "Ja Ja Re" in sink with tamil words.

The strings, is it veena or sitar ?
Fusion music between "veena or sitar", violin, drums and mridangam was awesome. Adding elegance to the mridangam is the "gong" sound.

Karma Veeran, sung by Rahman Ji and his sistser.

I got delayed with hearing Kochadaiiyaan songs :(

Because it was sung by Rahman Ji, I obviously wanted to hear this song first in the album. Rahman Ji has truly outdone himself here. My eyes naturally moisten at the end portion when both brother and sister croon sentimentally. I don’t know what they’re saying and neither have I bothered to find out. All I know is that I feel this part expresses a lot of love. It feels great to hear A.R. Raihanah after the delightful Ennile Maha Olio. She is a champion in her own right.
For now, this song is enough for me to keep revisiting the album. The rest of the songs can wait or can they?

Sunil,

Karma Veeran song is next in line for me in Kochadaiiyaan album. Have not heard it yet to the fullest.
Eventhough music can be enjoyed without understanding or following and in your wonderful case just the vocals did the magic.
Just to increase your enthusiasm, I give the translation of this song - but am allowing you to make out its hidden or inner meaning :
(tamil lyrics were taken from paadalvarigal.com)

The ballad is about courage, lauding the Warrior Kochadaiiyaan refered a Karma's Warrior - how he has chesiled himself both spiritually and valiantly as a warrior.

(Female)
Aagaaya Maegangal Pozhiyumbothu Aadhaayam Kaelaadhu
The showering clouds do not look for benefits

Thaai Naadu Thaakkindra Ullam Endrum Thanakaaga Vaazhathu…Thanakaaga Vaazhathu
The bravehearts do not live for self(ish) needs

(Male)
Hey Veeranae Karma Veeranae
Hey Warrior, Karma's warrior

Kadamai Veeranae Karma Veeranae
Dutiful Warrior, Karma's Warrior

Tholvigalaalae Thuvandu Vidaatae ; Vetrigalaalae Veri Kollathae
Failure do not put you down ; Don't be proud (aggitated) by your sucess

Kalladi Padum Enbathaalae Maram Kaaikaamal Povathillai
A tree does not stop giving fruits even if its stoned

Maalaigalai Kondu Mayangaathae ; Malaigalai Kandu Kalangaathae
Neither be flattered with garlands (praisings) nor afraid by the (looks of) mountains

Silladipadum Enbathaalae Vetri ; Kaanamal Povathillai
Victory does not disappeared even if its scrutinised

(With chorus)
Kaatrae Kaatrae Nee Thoonguvathae Illai
The wind (breeze) never sleeps

Karma Veeranae Veeranae Nee Oivathae Illai
Karma's Warrior never rests

Vaazhvae Vaazhvae Nee Theeruvathae Illai
The life never ends ;

Intha Vaazhvillae Sathiyam Thorpathae Illai
(when) Truth never fails in this life

Nindra Idathil Nirka Vaendumaa
Should root yourself in one place

Nee Odi Kondae Iru
(No but) you should keeping moving/running (upliftment)

Nimmathi Vaazhvil Vaendumaa
Should you need peace

Nee Thaandi Køndae Iru
(Then) keep on jumping (vaulting) yourself

(Female)
Aagaaya Maegangal Pøzhiyumbøthu Aadhaayam Kaelaadhu
Thaai Naadu Thaakkindra Ullam Èndrum
Thanakaaga Vaazhathu…Thanakaaga Vaazhathu

(With chorus)
Kaatrae Kaatrae Nee Thøønguvathae Illai
Karma Veeranae Veeranae Nee Oivathae Illai
Vaazhvae Vaazhvae Nee Theeruvathae Illai
Intha Vaazhvillae Šathiyam Thørpathae Illai

(Male)
Kozhaigal Mannithaal Athu Perithilla Perithalla
Its not a big deal to excuse a coward

Veerargal Mannithaala Athu Varalaaru Varalaaru
Excusing defeated warriors (after a defeat - giving them their life and pride back) is History

(With chorus)
Kaatrae Kaatrae Nee Thøønguvathae Illai
Karma Veeranae Veeranae Nee Oivathae Illai
Vaazhvae Vaazhvae Nee Theeruvathae Illai
Intha Vaazhvillae Šathiyam Thørpathae Illai
Kaatrae Kaatrae Nee Thøønguvathae Illai
Karma Veeranae Veeranae Nee Oivathae Illai
Vaazhvae Vaazhvae Nee Theeruvathae Illai
Intha Vaazhvillae Šathiyam Thørpathae Illai

(Male)
Pønnum Mannum Vendru Mudippavan Kadamai Veeranae
A Dutiful (here refered as a normal) warrior is the one who won gold and land {Mann's 1st meaning = Land}

Antha Pønnai Orunaal Mannai Paarpavan Karma Veeranae Karma Veeranae
(But) a Karma's Warrior looks at the gold as dust {Mann's 2nd meaning = dust}

[Actually a dutiful warrior becomes a Karma's warrior the moment he neglects all the materialistic benefits like treating gold and dust the same way. The above 2 lines are very important in the song, its the soul of the song, if you are unable to follow it, let me know I will elaborate it]

(Female)
Aagaaya Maegangal Pøzhiyumbøthu Aadhaayam Kaelaadhu
Thaai Naadu Thaakkindra Ullam Èndrum
Thanakaaga Vaazhathu…Thanakaaga Vaazhathu

Exactly what I felt while listening to 'medhuvaga thaan'. SJ would've been much better for the female part, and give the oldie song feel. Here I am guessing this song is for the father rajni, so the feel must be intended. (The other Spb song should also be for him.)

That means, haricharan is for son rajni?! Interesting choice..

The assemlage of plates (finished 3D animation performed by animators + concepted/respective background/foreground), the assemlage of plates to produce the final image is good. The motion angle (riding a horse seen from an base angle) has captured Rajini and the horse (horse is animation here, where footage of Rajini riding an imaginary horse was added) with a neat proposition. There is enough clarity to Rajini's face, thats a tremendrous sucess for using the technique.

Turns out to be a "Engay Pogutho Vannam" instrumental. The same line is repeated giving variation only in choice of instruments. Sound more like a Relaxation music rather than a real dream, the fabricated vision of Rana. Good question, but do we ask that for a ANY U certified movie released in the recent past. But thats not my escape reply. Being very well aware that Kochadaiiyaan will come up under scrutinizing radar, I will act as a responsible fan to reply to any queries regarding this film.

What KSR is trying to do here is take preventive steps learning from the past the Kuselan Deception. Its his character anyway, and its his thought process while conceiving his character. He has labeled Kochadaiiyaan as a Humanly Natured, but that does not mean this warrior has put down his sword. Its a uprising against the evil, as potrayed from one of the Thandavams of Siva, and violence is not an additional package but a part of the movement.

Comming to violence and restriction for kids. There are different layers to it, starting from intorduction of blood, body parts & fibres, implication of gore (torture) and inducing graphical nature (limbs geting severed). To make it simple, any fight between humans or even animals is violent - even Chota Bheem is shown throwing stones at others. Take Jackie chan films, it has action, but never in his movies there is blood, as blood is graphical representation. Take 300, its not only has gore but its goes to become maximum graphical.

Kochadaiiyaan is an Animation, there itself these aspects are reduced or becomes more irreal, unless pushed beyond boundaries like in Beowulf, which I feel will not be the case, as in any Rajini movie it gets beautifully masked. Then, the arrow-headhot or the spear piercings are not graphical at all as the blood splatters are controled and they even don't have the same scary red. Any fairy tale for kids show how the dragons are slayed. So, if the violence is kept under control, breifly narrated for the kid, I do not think its going to disturb them.

Was schearing for ARR in the whole Album, and finally found him shining in this composition. This is ARR style, the spirit to be different and render something unique. The basic idea to incorporate distanced instruments itself is creativeness at its peak. The pure sound of musical arrangement was just resonating.

Usually a song with Siva as backdrop, you have an extended Udukai throughout pounding your head. ARR himself did that in Baba Sakthi Kodu song. But here he has neatly presented the rage along with the motive, giving it a modern touch that has been missing for quite sometime now.

@1m30s, the real party begins.

The chorus is aptly tiggered where the male taking the upliftment of the mountains while the female vocals occupy the streams following down from it. The whole setup is throughly thought and recorded to bring in a feel about the suituation and the location of the song. I am sure this song along with the visuals is going to do wonders on screen.

Vairamuthu has put in just a couple of lines giving enough space for the music to roll in. But these lines are quite concentrated, just like a effective oneliner of a massive concept. He pens lauding Siva masking it as a praise for Kochadaiiyaan -

Ninnadi Serndhaal Neraadhu Maranam
Kalam Kadandhum Pechudaiiyaan,
Kattrai Kadandhu Mochadaiyaan

before signing off with an epic line - Kondrai Soodum Kochadaiiyaan - Kondrai is a flower, adding the meaning to the title Kochadaiiyaan

Engal Kochadaiiyaan : Flower in the wind

Kochadaiyaan (aka) Kochadaiiyaan music review

Superstar Rajini’s Kochadaiyaan features the best possible music ensemble in Rahman, Vairamuthu and the late Vaalee. Has the group delivered the expected magic?

Chinmayee sounds enchanting in Idhayam, which is a tantalizing melody with divine instrumentation. Her voice modulation is brilliant when she sings ‘Idhayam Nazhuvi Nazhuvi Pogudhe’ as her expressions gel with the meaning of the lyrics. Her classical base has been fully put to use by Rahman. We also get to hear melody specialist Srinivas after quite a while in a high-profile album such as this.

Karma Veeran as the name says is a heroic, uplifting number rendered by the brother - sister pair of Rahman and Raihanah. Both the singers sound typical and show their prowess at traversing the higher pitches. The chorus sections and the majestic orchestration are a delight to listen to, in this Tamil song with international sensibilities.

Maatram Ondrudhaan features the booming, inimitable voice of the Superstar rendering beautifully written, thought provoking lines. The chorus and orchestration work well here too and Haricharan is earnest as ever. Though the processed beats stick out a bit, the ‘jathi’ rendition towards the end is an innovative addition.

Manamaganin Sathiyam flows with melody and Haricharan is at his pleasing best. The nadaswaram sounds apt in this marital song from the groom’s perspective. Manappennin Sathiyam is a related number from the bride’s perspective and Latha Rajini sounds so young and sweet. In both the songs, the percussions are unassuming and the focus is on the heavenly melody and the lyrics which brim with love and respect.

Medhuvaagathaan features two melody legends – the ever delightful SPB and the silky Sadhana Sargam. Rahman resorts to the ‘mridangam’ to provide a beautiful rhythm to the number while the fleeting sounds of the sitar are hard to miss. The chorus group does their bit for the track while the soaring orchestration around the halfway point is magnificent.

The quintessential Rajini opening track featuring the commanding vocals of SPB is here. Enge Pogudho Vaanam features memorable, gooseflesh inducing orchestration and a spirited chorus section. The Celtic touches in the second interlude fit well into the track. Most of the lines are really topical to Rajini’s life. A fan favorite, this sure will be.

Rana’s Dream is the instrumental version of Enge Pogudho Vaanam and has been performed by the London Sessions Orchestra. The track takes a pensive, subtle approach and is truly international in its sound. The ensemble of strings, the flute, and clarinet create a really soulful mood. CLASS!

Engal Kochadaiyaan is performed by a group of singers and the track carries a good amount of drive. We get to hear digital sounds as well as traditional percussion instruments in the background. On screen, Rajini’s ‘Rudra Thandavam’ is expected to take this track to the finish line.

Verdict: A grand effort by Rahman which befits the movie’s chivalrous theme. The melodies are topnotch too.

Personal Picks - Rana's Dream, Enge Pogudho Vaanam, Karma Veeram, Maatram Ondrudhaan, Manamaganin Sathiyam and Manappennin Sathiyam.

why the movie was not made with real actors? whats the need for motion-capture digital movie of RK now? he is not so old that he cant act. RK and KH can do such digital imagery movies when they reach very old age. imho i would have loved to see real actors and not this.

Kochadaiiyaan Music Review
After months of rescheduling, the album of 'photorealistic-performance captured'-Rajini-starrer Kochadaiiyaan is out. The movie has been in the news ever since it was announced for its cast and magnum opus production. Starring Superstar Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles, the movie has an all-star cast. Each person working on the movie has a mutually exclusive fan base of his/hers, making this movie BIG in every sense.

The second biggest mutually exclusive fan base is that of A R Rahman's. His previous album Mariyaan was well received. However, the music for the movie was thematic. With Kochadaiyaan, Rahman returns to commercial cinema music, after a hiatus, much to the delight of his fans.

The album consists of nine tracks - seven penned by veteran lyricist Vairmuthu, one by Vaalee and one, instumental.

Most of us are familiar with the opening track of the album. Enge Pogutho Vaanam is the mandatory SPB sung-heavily orchestrated-introduction song for our Superstar hero. The line "Ellai Unakku Illai Thalaivaa" describes what the song is about. The song gives a magnificent reception to its hero with its heavy orchestration, especially the brass section, with the trumpets and trombones. SPB gives a powerful rendition of a song that carries the pressure of describing its hero's glory.

The second song of the album is Methuvaagathaan, sung by SPB and Sadhana Sargam, which begins with a riff very similar to the one one from Maahi Ve. The non-experimental approach to the album is evident right from the beginning. Say, you wouldn't find a romantic song as slow paced and simple as Innum Konjam Neram in a Rajini starrer. The vocal chords lend grandeur to this song. The Veena interludes sit beautifully in the beginning. Sadhana's voice, is as fresh as ever and a delight to listen to. SPB renders mellifluously. The mridangam rhythm track is beautifully synced into the song. Thumbs up!

Maatram Ondrudhaan Maaradhadhu. Were you waiting for a goosebumps moment? "Ethirigalai ozhikka mothal vazhi...mannippu", Rajinikanth begins, giving way to the orchestra - there it is, a whistle moment! Haricharan takes over proceedings with energy, his voice screams it. The song is well orchestrated and the chorus lines make it grand. Lyrically, it is a conversation between Rajini and his fan-listener, as she/he listens to Rajini's advice. The song ends with jathi by Umashankar. Hoots will make this song un-hearable in the theatre. Thumbs up!

Manapennin Sathiyam and Manamaganini Sathiyam sung by Latha Rajinikanth (yes, surprise!) and Haricharan respectively, share the same tune. Haricharan's unique nasal voice has made him a favourite. The female rendition is impressive too. Lyirically, the song(s) is/are a promise made by the lead actors to each other. The Ghanjeera beats and Nadhaswaram interludes add beauty to this soothing track. The song, with its familiar classical tune stays true to its roots - the slow pace and simplicity, all through. Likable, right away.

The next song in the album is Idhayam. Sung by Chinmayee and Srinivas, it takes off energetically post the deftly rendered recitation by Chinmayee, especially the lines nagarndhu nagarndhu..poguthey. Srinivas's voice reminds one of Minsara Poove. The song is high on emotion and points at the pain of the lead pair in the movie. It is not catchy and soothing to the ear right away, but it is a Rahman song. Thumbs up? Time will tell.

Engal Kochadaiiyaan worships its hero as the title suggests. The song sounds like it signifies Rajini's rise against the antagonist post interval. Rendered by an ensemble named after the title, the song/score when coupled with visuals of a fierce Rajinikanth, could be a treat on screen. It is almost as though Rahman had to use a choir in every song to glorify the larger than life hero. But the glorification is what we want, don't we? Powerful!

Rana's Dream, with its western orchestral arrangement feels like a Hollywood movie score. Based on Enge Pogutho Vaanam, the track is an inspiring and pleasant listen. The track describes the hero's ambition and justifies its title aptly. The track is soothing to the ear and leaves behind its emotion in the mind. We don't get to hear such tracks in Tamil movies. Thumbs up!

Karma Veeran, rendered by A R Rahman and sister A R Reihana is the signature Rahman-sung motivational song. If the rest of the album glorifies its hero, this song, to me, glorifies the Karma Veeran, its composer. He renders with elan and carries the larger-than-life theme till the end. However, the deja vu factor is undeniable, the tune bears resemblance to Nenje Yezhu. However, "Kaatre kaatre nee thoonguvadhe illai", you're sure to be left humming. Thumbs up!

The album lives upto expectations easily. Five out of eight tracks are very impressive and the rest adding to the list on repeated hearings is known fact. The album is sure to please fans and they wouldn't be left feeling a void till the composer releases his next album.
Rahman does it for Rajini again.
