Unmai Villambi,

songs yet to sink in, but good melodies.

Start with Medhuvagathan - its a universal number, quite known for ages that we still like to see and hear for about a century now. Then Engay Poguthu Vannam to get an experience on a majestic journey. Once your sink is full, time for Manamaganini Sathiyam (male version) & Karma Veeran. Make sure you are listening to a CD on a well equipped Audio system and not thru a MP3 format or by youtube video. The Guitar Ramming in Engal Kochadaiiyaan can change the view on music that we had been constantly listening to.

why the movie was not made with real actors?
Like anything else, Kochadaiiyaan is a Project. Investors agree, teams paid, planning done and now its in finishing stage.

whats the need for motion-capture digital movie of RK now?
Kochadaiiyaan has its root upto Sultan:the warrior. We cannot get the truth or what actually made this projet to bloom. An educated guess could be, the seed was thrown in when Ocher Studios partnered with Warner Bros ; Baba Masacre ; Rajini being the last standing HERO of TFI & wish to eternalise "Superstar"; so on so forth. Then Sivaji and Enthiran happened, which made them shelf the half baked project Sultan: The Warrior. Rana Episode, revived their anxiety and by this time they made some deals and got a considerable budget to go ahead and mix Sultan: the Warrior & Rana into Kochadaiiyaan using the contracts of the artists signed for Film Rana to participate in Kochadaiiyaan.

Its pure buisness and nothing personal (only fans get personal). Mediatically speaking, Soundarya wished to swim in unexplored waters, and she knew very well that her father's name would make her journey a bit easy. Irrespective to the result, her effort will be praised with enough dose of salt, pepper and other spices.

he is not so old that he cant act. RK and KH can do such digital imagery movies when they reach very old age.
Old => funny word. How old is a 1 month OLD baby.
Anyway, I don't think the age is a factor here. Cinema is a lie generously thrown at your face where a 60 becomes 20 and vice-versa. What is important for us, the fans, is that RK & KH are aging with grace, no denial in that.

An animation film is no less than a normal motion picture. Moreover, the creativeness can have no boundries in Animation. But its a genre which is measured by an individual's likeness scale. Some like thrillers, others Action.

imho i would have loved to see real actors and not this.
No comments as its your likeness and I welcome/respect it.

mappi..thanks. by old what i meant was there are some scenes which an aging actor could not perform. the example comes to my mind is jackie chan, how racy his fight scenes were and see now. what i failed to convey was if digital imagery movie is to be made, that can be of dead or retired actors. imagine new MGR movie! so my point was, this may not be the ripe time for such movie for rk. no offence meant. i would watch it fdfs along with my kids.

i would watch it fdfs along with my kids.

Very glad.

Hope they are planning to give goodies to the kids coming to watch the film atleast for the 1st week. I can't remember exactly the last movie where I got goodies. I think it was in AVM Rajeswari for My Dear Kutti Sathan, they gave a Maggi packet + a free ice cream during the interval. It was just awesome having the icecream just after the 3D cone-ice circling in front of your eyes. They should digitally remaster and re-release this movie, anytime kids will love this movie.

Engal Kochadaiiyaan

Was schearing for ARR in the whole Album, and finally found him shining in this composition. This is ARR style, the spirit to be different and render something unique. The basic idea to incorporate distanced instruments itself is creativeness at its peak. The pure sound of musical arrangement was just resonating.

Usually a song with Siva as backdrop, you have an extended Udukai throughout pounding your head. ARR himself did that in Baba Sakthi Kodu song. But here he has neatly presented the rage along with the motive, giving it a modern touch that has been missing for quite sometime now.

@1m30s, the real party begins.

The chorus is aptly tiggered where the male taking the upliftment of the mountains while the female vocals occupy the streams following down from it. The whole setup is throughly thought and recorded to bring in a feel about the suituation and the location of the song. I am sure this song along with the visuals is going to do wonders on screen.

Vairamuthu has put in just a couple of lines giving enough space for the music to roll in. But these lines are quite concentrated, just like a effective oneliner of a massive concept. He pens lauding Siva masking it as a praise for Kochadaiiyaan -

Ninnadi Serndhaal Neraadhu Maranam
Kalam Kadandhum Pechudaiiyaan,
Kattrai Kadandhu Mochadaiyaan

before signing off with an epic line - Kondrai Soodum Kochadaiiyaan - Kondrai is a flower, adding the meaning to the title Kochadaiiyaan

Engal Kochadaiiyaan : Flower in the wind

Engal Kochadaiiyaan

This song is definitely a strong contender for being the best title song in Indian History. The gung-ho arsenal of instruments emit Rahman Ji’s command eminently. Be it the percussion, the melody, etc. everything is delivered with 100% dedication. With the blessings of Lord Shiva, this song is truly a selfless offering from ARR to ARR as well as Rajini fans.

The Kombu, an instrument rarely heard these days’ sets the record straight in the prelude. Throughout the song, amongst other instruments ARR finds scope for electronic mayhem which backs the “Thaandav” tension. This aspect was probably inserted due to CGI/Motion Capture nature of the movie otherwise the song would’ve been authentically Indian. But ARR brings the best of both worlds Vis-à-vis ethereal chanting and distorted basses and guitars. The female parts are so soothing while the male deliver their lines with upmost oomph especially, the “Shambu Mahadeva” line.

The song is a complete paradox and no stone of experimentation has been unturned. Kochadaiiyaan, a film that has been in the making for roughly more than five years (ref. Sultan The Warrior) was always at the back of my mind. I was patient and I’m glad I was because this song seems to be nurtured with absolute master class.

Is Kochadaiiyaan in par with Platform Games ?
(Views are entirely mine and its not a reply to any individual. Its just a note on the most recurring question about Kochadaiiyaan)

The answer is very simple, NO. Just beacause its a "No", it does not mean that its not worth. I did come across some amazing critisms - one even went on to say "Embarasing moment in Indian Cinema". Well, we all are not interested in everyone being interested over a same thing, are we ?

Before speaking another word, I would like to inform you that I am not supporting Kochadaiiyaan mindlessly or just for the sake of it. I am a Sony Maniac and just like acheivements in XBOX you have Platinums trophies system in PS3/PS4. I have 72 platinums, ie., I have played 100% (including DLC) of 72 games. I own 124 platform games in PS series and Vista, not to mention other computer games. So I am well aware of the graphics we are talking about, BUT just did not bother to compare it with Kochadaiiyaan as I understand that its wrong.

Comparing is healthy when the samples taken are on the same level. The fisrt game (for PS2 & XBOX) done using mocap was Prince of Perisia. So think, should Kochadaiyaan, the 1st in TFI, should be compared with Thief that released last month. Does Kochadaiiyann merit this calibre ?

Platform gaming is a huge buisness. Its a sector where dedicated technicians work round the clock in a reowned studios. They are led by gaint enterprises who govern the market. Let me give you an exemple how big they are - 007 legends - They informed Activision that the next Bond contract is not with them - Boom - the game was removed from the steam server and now the game is available in a dollar shop. At the same time look at how Rockstar promoted GTA V - the 1st day sales would give you an idea.

Kochadaiiyaan's budget is peanuts before these platform games production cost. Plus it was made by a handful of Indians using an alien technology (alein to TFI) all by themselves. They got to travel to different studios to get out thier 3D models. Whereas, companies like UBISOFT has teams working globally where the development is broken into parts and assembled/coded in few corners of the world, not to mention the ownership of copyrights and other studio related materials. Moreover, Kochadaiiyan is a first attempt where TFI is going by the chinese saying - to move a moutain you got start stone by stone. Just drawing it beside another well established and healthy industry is absurd.

The basic idea itself is new for us. Not that we don't know, just that we don't have enough experienced resource. Its not like a regular motion picture. Here, the development happens with an idea and the imaginary visuals of the director (or ghost director). We are not used to such thought process. Ask any film maker in TFI to talk about his/her movies. They cannot describe it. Thats why I insist in taking our films to various festivals, as there they ask the film makers those questions he is not exposed to, not like our meida asking how many intiamte scenes are there in the movie ! So with all these new avenues and discovery process, Kochadaiiyaann is definitely a welcome attempt. Just like Prince of Persia still holding the prime spot in MOCAP technology used in gaming platforms even after 25 years, Kochadaiyaan will have the same place in TFI in 2040 where a highly advanced mocap film from TFI will give its respects to.

I am aware that we are late, but happy that we are almost there.

An individual watching a movie or not is his right, I am just pointing out the reason stated is not right. Choice is yours.

Mappi sir Don't sweat it ! We can keep saying its a good first attempt or accept the truth , we (as indians) don't have it in us to compete at global level. Money is a key factor agreed but Money is not the only thing we lack.

Back to Coachhaadaaiyaann as a project is executed by a rich girl the one which dreamt while she was playing with her princess doll house.

ARR Garu as usual did a great service by providing us with this album , to lower our expectations even further down. Its amazing how we can add superlatives to individuals
at drop of our hats without understanding the merit it carries. For me Except Karma Veran everything else is kind of mashed up sambar rice and potato fries, taste depends on what you bite. Comfort food for some , disgusting looking for others. oh even Queen's own personal symphony wouldn't have saved this album.( Last ARR period album which I liked/loved was Laagan , this is no where near that.)

Not sure why there is such rush to release this movie, when RBI has extended its deadline till Jan of next year.

( Last ARR period album which I liked/loved was Laagan , this is no where near that.)

haHA, Dilbert, we meet again with Laagan ... but this time we take it a bit slow and steady and enjoy the discussion.

Lagaan and Kochadaiyaan are period films, agreed. They have chronicles picked up here and there, agreed. But the major difference is Kochadaiyaan goes a bit beyond and takes the Fantasy chair. So, IMO, Lagaan OST cannot be equal to Kochadaiiyaan OST.

We have just listened to the music, I have still not completed, there are 3 more to go and I am a bit hooked with Karma Veeran for sometime now, that I am not able to put it in words yet. Breifly put, being a fan of music (and IR) as well as being the first to appreciate ARR works, I tend to get the dream thorough his Music. Yes its cheesy at parts, but concluding it before seeing it with the visuals is a bit far fetched. We have to give them space before cornerning them. Kochadaiyaan team have not yet fully expressed, and I feel we are not allowing them to.

Past are the days where I madly quarrel as a fanboy. I have learnt to accept. For instance I even agree to point out the flaws - the horse riding poster - the mane (horse neck hair) is missing and the shadows are not falling at the right place. Others - the heads are out of propotion, hair seems to be static, coloring while showing teeth is not in sink ... so on so forth. But hey, its a typical mistakes that happens when as a film maker you do not pay attention to or lack the needed experience, but sincerely hope we improve and correct ourselves. We have to help them, any film maker, rather than being the "1st on the net" to whip them.

I don't have a say on personalised comments, as I don't know neither Soundarya nor Rajini ! I only know them as artists/techniciens where no say about Soundarya, but Rajini is AWESOME.

And finaly, yes, we do HAVE it, what we don't have is the push and its not far behind.

We can keep saying its a good first attempt or accept the truth

Rather than judging it good/bad or grading it by weighing it through likeness scale, I always point it as a welcome attempt. And not a mini-second I will hesitate to come down hard on them if they have missed the oppurtunity and given us a blunder in the name of blockbuster.

Kochadaiyaan (aka) Kochadaiiyaan music review

Maatram Ondrudhaan features the booming, inimitable voice of the Superstar rendering beautifully written, thought provoking lines. The chorus and orchestration work well here too and Haricharan is earnest as ever. Though the processed beats stick out a bit, the ‘jathi’ rendition towards the end is an innovative addition.

Director: Soundarya Rajinikanth & K.S. Ravikumar
Music Director: A R Rahman
Star Cast: Rajinikanth, Deepika Padukone, Rukmini Vijayakumar, Prithviraj, Sarath Kumar, Aadhi, Nassar, Jackie Shroff, Shobhana
Lyricist: Mehboob (Track #1), Irshad Kamil (Track #2,3,4,5,6), Raqueeb Alam (Track #8)

Expectations: Rajinikanth’s latest film Kochadaiiyaan has been in the making for almost six years and now it's ready for release. The movie has been made using the motion capture technology and is an animated film. It is India’s first of its kind. And when it comes to music, it has A R Rahman, the music maestro. Rahman has done a lot of experiment in music composing recently and most of the time we liked what he did. He is one of his kind and we are so excited to review this soundtrack.

1- Aye Jawaan – (AR Rahman, AR Raihanna): It is an anthemic song with alot of patriotism. Sung beautifully by A R Rahman himself and his sister AR Raihanna. Raihanna has a singing style similar to her brother, but she has not much to do in this track but whatever part she has got, she did it tremendously. It's not typical Rahman's soulful tracks. He has tried something different here. Very energetic and powerful song. Motivational lyrics by Mehboob. Rating 4/5

2- Dil Chaspiya – (Arijit Singh, Jonita Gandhi): A soft romantic track. The whole track is a beauty. The excellent blend of western instrumentation in a typical Indian classical melody is something only Rahman does best. The use of Tabla and Matka is superb. It will definitely remind you of the initial days of Rahman when he used to give similar heartwarming melodies. Arijit is marvelous behind the mic and does full justice to Rahman's tune. Jonita is also good. Lyrics are penned by Irshad Kamil and are very romantic and beautiful. Rating 4.5/5

3- Bol De – (Javed Ali): It is a very different kind of inspirational track. Starts with the powerful lines said in the dialogue form by the superstar Rajinikanth and such enthusiastic lines are being said throughout the song. It is the track which grows on you slowly. In the end, classical rhythm section sounds good. Lyrics are good. Javed Ali has sung the song in a melodious way. Rating 3.5/5

4- Vaada Vaada (Female) - (Shashaa Tirupati): A soothing and sweet romantic track. Sashaa Tirupati who has sung some songs for an album, does a great job here. Her vocals are so beautiful. Music arrangements are fabulous and Shehnai-use gives the song amazing touch. A sound which resembles Manjira-sound is being played continuously and makes the tune a true true winner. Irshad Kamil shines in the lyrics department. Rating 4.5/5

5- Vaada Vaada (Male) - (Karthik): There is no significant difference between female and male version except male-female vocals obviously. Karthik has sung the song nicely. Though composition keeps you reminding that it is a Hariharan-track. Rating 4.5/5

6- Mera Gham – (Shreya Ghoshal, Javed Ali): A classical based track with haunting tune. Perfect music arrangements. Shreya's heavenly beautiful vocals and Javed Ali's soulful voice make the song a treat to listen. Both compliment eachother very well. Lyrics are beautiful, romantic and lovable. Rating 4.5/5

7- Rana’s Dream – (Instrumental): Played by the London Sessions Orchestra. It is based on the lines of Aaya Khwaab Ka Mausam. Flute has been used and it gives you a Hollywood score’s feel. Rating 4/5

8- Aaya Khwaab Ka Mausam - (Raghav Mathur): This is the Hindi version of the same Tamil song which was released in October last year and received great appreciation. Very energetic track with the use of heavy percussion. Composition is perfect for the demigod stature of Rajinikanth. Tamil version is sung by SP Balasubrahmanyam, so it was an impossible task for Raghav Mathur to match him. He has given a good performance. It seems a war song and will be amazing in theatres. Rating 4.5/5

9- Thandav – (Chorus): A powerful track with heavy use of percussion. Chorus in Rahman's tracks is always so melodious and excellent and this one is no exception. Music arrangements evoke the grandiosity of a battlefield perfectly. A proof of Rahman's brilliance. Rating 4.5/5

FINAL THOUGHTS: Kochadaiiyaan is undoubtedly one of Rahman's best works in recent times. After a long time, A R Rahman has composed a soundtrack which is based on traditional Indian melody and this soundtrack will be remembered after decades as we still love the soundtracks of Taal, Roja, Swades, Bombay etc.

RATING BREAKDOWN:

Freshness.. 9/10
Compositions.. 9.5/10
Lyrics.. 9.2/10
Singing.. 9.3/10
Repeat Value.. 9.1/10

Highlights of what Rajini says :

@1:50:41 => I am really very shy you know !

- Salutes the honarable guests

- Rajmouli explained the difficulties of film making using motion capture, but I was not aware of them initially as I am just an actor and I am not technically sound, it neither insterested me nor I understood it.

- Before I fell sick, we started a Film titled Rana based on a folklore which is in the lines of films made by SS Rajmouli (Mahadheera, Naan E), but certainly it does not match the magnum opus he creates.

- I have made films with different genres - Endhiran (Sci-fi), Sivaji (Political), Chandramukhi (Horror), Baba (Spirtuality - Devuda Picture) : You did not like Devuda film but you liked Ghost film *sarcastic laugh*

- In all these films I am just an actor, nothing more. I releive you the open Secret - Kamal Hasan is the biggest actor. But me getting such offers in technical movies like Endhiran (Robo) or Vikramasimha (Kochadaiiyaan) is by God's play. Actually Kamal Hassan is very much interested in the technical aspects. More than an actor, he wished to became a director. For a person like him not getting a chance to do such films, but a person like me does it is mere God's grace. I am 100% sure no one else can get lucky like me, its like the philosophy that you get happiness when rare things falling on your laps and not with everything that you get.

- So two years I was ill, and then they narrated me the idea to make Kochadaiiyaan. They said its a prequel to Rana. Its about his father, Kochadaiiyaan.

- Doctor Murali instructed me to take complete rest for about 2+ years, advicing him not to act in any movies (irrespective to just action or songs) which gives physical strain. When the doctor told me that, I thought its impossible as Rana is on hold. He then comprised saying I can do 7 to 8 days of shoot. I asked him how it is possible, and he told that I can go ahead with Soundraya's Animation project Sultan, which was started without Montion Capture technilogy. When I saw just a 2mins cliping, a Thandavam sequence, Soundraya insisted me to do that role stating that she is producing the film. Well, if its a straight picture its OK, but now its a technical film, plus its my daughter who is doing it that I can't say a NO. I was worried - as a father seeing my daughter taking up this big responsibity, the time constrait (10 to 12 years in the making), the budget, Is our cinema ready for such ventrues etc., but they assured me that its all well planned. Hearing that, I accepted it leaving the burdens to be dealt by God himself.

- Irrespective to the sucess this film would make, I can assure you the hard work and effort put by the team. I have seen the mental pressure of Soundraya while doing this film. Hats-off.

- Shares his happiness to have a friend like Mohan Babu for his huge support and his Wife Latha for all her caring. He thanks them on emotional grounds.

- The diffuclty does not matter, the product should be good. For ex: all the efforts in making a briyani goes for a toss if it does not taste good.

- The film got censored, and I watched the film. Eventhough its my film, I always watch it with an audience mind. Basically because I came to the industry after having enjoyed and loved cinema as an audience. Even now I watch films just like the audience would do.

- I watched the film for the first time, only in 2D. For the 1st 10 mins I was disappointed. Practically speaking, seeing yourself while still alive as a 3D model was a bit disappointing (takes the use of NTR non-life models used as its beleivable and OK as he is no more). So its after about 15 mins, I started to settle down. I was pulled into by the character and the story, and then the animation started to die off. Thats why I am telling you, the 1st 10 minutes will be disappointing to see the 3D models, but once you get drawn into the story, the animation aspect fades away.

- When I watched it in 3D, its was just a big experience. A good story and narration

- ARR informed me that in Hollywood an animation picture is made for more than 7 years by Walt Disney.

- Its a musical film and ARR music & Dance only adds up the greatness to the animation.

- Kochadaiiyaan is a Warrior, Dancer & a Philosopher. He is the combination of all the 3.

- The films has got 6-7 songs and one of the song is sung by Mrs. Latha after a very long time. I have also participated in a song. So its basically a "musical-emotional-philosophical-drama".

- Its a first of a kind film in India. It is done by my daughter in collaboration with Eros. Thanks to Murali and he recollects his first hollywood picture Bloodstone procduced by him.

- By your well wishes and Gods blessing, I hope Kochadaiiyaan will suceed. Rajamouli himself has cared to explain to us how difficult it is to make a movie like this, but definitely you will see its effects on screen.

- I hope to meet you all in a much bigger function celebrating the hit sucess of the film. Every time I visit, the telugu audience praise me for my performence. So this picture is also different and I have played a different role in it and I beleive you will like it also.

- Namaste, thanks.

Rajini to break his own record

Kochadaiyaan is getting ready for a huge release and looks like Rajinikanth is all set to break a record set by none other than himself.

According to ATMUS Entertainment, Kochadaiiyaan is slated to be released in over 100 locations in the US, and this will be higher than the screens in which his previous release Endhiran was screened.

It may be noted here that Endhiran’s Tamil and Telugu versions were released in 64 and 33 screens respectively in the US.

Watched the trailer on the big screen and all I can say is it has all the elements in it to become a colossal flop. I am seeing people jumping over others for criticizing the substandard animation, motion capture or whatever you call it. You need not match the standards set by Avatar or Tintin. Nobody expects TFI to make huge strides. At least match a Magadheera. If you spend 120 crores and make such a horrible animation, I really feel sorry for you, Soundarya. This is not your cup of tea. Please don't spoil your father's name.

Rajni's sudden entry into social media and his wish of Soundarya opting for the family way only doubles up my fear.

I am seeing people jumping over others for criticizing the substandard animation, motion capture or whatever you call it.

Could I invite you to see it another way ?

More of substantial materials were shared here in the past few months, rather than photo-shoped pictures, self-style acclaims and tweet trash dumpings. These materials were researched and synthesised to make a commoner easily understand, including the source materials for those who wish to look beyond. Personally, I never saw anyone been broken from expressing their views in this thread. Just that they were chanelised. If they did not get it, then they did not even understand what they spoke about. Even after explanations about CGI, 3D Animations & Motion Capture, their current market and their influence in our movies and the potential for its rise in TFI thru the film Kochadaiiyaan, still people try to look at it in a grandeur scale.

The most important plea was to give the team a chance. Rajini's voice coupled by ARR music will uplift the movie. All we have to wait and see is the imagination circle of Madame Soundraya & here orchestration of post production works.

And as a reminder, criticization of the visuals were never a topic of interest as its an individuals likeness. Only when the torments of making a film using this technology (for the 1st time) was mercilessly slayed and slaughtering the attempt by including baseless comparisons with high generation games was brought to notice.

I am aware that most of us are Rajini Fans, and I assure you that our fear is in sync. I only have a upper fear, as I deceided to walk on the rope. Never I had talked about a film in such a scale, and I am prepared to face the consequences if its a dud.

Movie could be another Kuselan or another hit. Sustainability in the long run (overseas wise given the presentation) is the big question mark. Yes the technical standards are what worries me. Even with a good story/screenplay/content, you still have to sit through the "ventriloquism" of the actors being fictionalized as people living in period times. That "Rajni"'s hand goes through the sword in the trailer (approx. 2:20-ish) shows the poor quality in the post production. Only KSR's screenplay can save this movie. If what we saw in the trailer was the final output....:(

I think most fans are looking forward to his next, "Lingaa" then see a 125C experiment, but will for the sake of Rajni.

Seriously for an animation movie.. ?

It depends on the countries. For exemple, in China you have only 3 certificates. The 3rd one is very strict one, where no minor should be allowed. If found, the theatre authorities as well as the parents are going to jail, for sure. Similarly, there are countries who are quite pricky about the violence shown to children. For that, even Religious Contents are certified as Strict. The lastest, Noah, was banned in many countries, simply because, their relegion is something else than the one depicted in the film.

Our certification comes a bit closer to European ones. America has its own indicators, but for exemple, sometimes you start to wonder if Bambi is certified with rating R just because its mother gets killed in the end (oppss ... spoiler split). If you look at it, such movies will not be American productions, that summerises a bit. So there are so many aspects involving when it comes to screening a film in a foreign land. The current trend is that, if the film is banned in the home state, certain countries don't permit them either, even its has obtained universal certification from the respective bureau. Ex : Vishwaroopam & Enam were staled because of the internal commotions, and till date have not seen the light in few countries.

Court order - Why has this come to light only just before the release ? Postponing top star movies has become the norm.

Rajinikanth's Kochadaiyan release postponed

CHENNAI: Superstar Rajinikanth's film 'Kochadaiyan will not hit the screens on May 9 as scheduled. "Kocadaiyan release has been postponed, due to a court order. I cannot reveal any more detail on that," a source close to the super star's family told The Times of India.

Confirming the news, the producers posted a brief announcement on line saying: "Dear patrons we are sorry to inform you that Kochadaiyan, scheduled for May 9, has been postponed. Those of you who have purchased tickets online will get refund through respective banks.

Inquiries revealed that the film ran into legal hurdles after the Oriental Bank of Commerce moved a court in Chennai seeking repayment of loan running to more than Rs 40 crore.

The part-animation film has been shot with "motion capture photo-realistic 3D technology".

'Kochadiiyaan' faces a legal hurdle

Last night, an official press release from the makers of 'Kochadiiyaan' confirmed that the film will not release on May 9 as scheduled and it has been postponed to May 23. The reason cited in the press release for the delay was 'Technical Issues'.

However a reliable source reveals that the postponement was unavoidable due to legal hurdles faced by the producers. A leading Bank has moved the court for the repayment of the loan of Rupees 40 crores before the release of the film.

'Kochadiiyaan' stars Superstar Rajinikanth and Deepika Padukone in lead roles. The film is India's first Performance Capture Photo Realistic film directed by Soundarya Ashwin, the younger daughter of Rajinikanth.

The advance bookings for the film started on May 7 but they were stopped owing to the issue that has hampered the release. Money will be refunded to those who have already booked the tickets.

5 shocking unofficial reasons for Kochadaiiyaan's delay!

2, 3 seem more probable.

1.
After numerous delays in release, Rajinikanth starrer 'Kochadiiyaan' directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin was finally expected to hit the screen on May 9, but last minute problems have tentatively pushed the movie's release to May 23. Though the official press statement from the makers is that the delay is to due to technical reasons and their intention to release the film in multiple language and in 2D and 3D versions on the same day, there are quite a number of shocking unofficial reasons being touted in industry circles for the delay in release.

2.
Producer's huge demand
It's said that the film's producers are demanding 70 percent of the first week collection from theatre owners; normally, they go for a 60-40 sharing agreement. Considering that it is all about the opening week collections these days and only few films attract audience after the first week, theatre owners are unwilling to agree to this.

3.
40 crore debt
The film seems to have run into legal hurdles, as reportedly, a private bank has moved the courts in Chennai seeking repayment of loan running to more than Rs 40 crore that the makers of the film have obtained from them. Kochadaiiyaan, has been made at a budget of Rs 125 crore.

4.
Modi effect
Only recently, Narendra Modi met Rajinikanth at this residence in Chennai, fueling speculations that Rajini is supporting Modi. Political observers say Rajini meeting Modi might have irked the powers that be, which could also be cause for the film's release troubles. Remember Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam and Vijay's Thalaivaa?

5.
Censor not done in some languages
Apparently, the film is yet to be censored in a couple of languages in which it is expected to release and this is being cited as one of the reasons for the postponement. However, the regional censor board officer in Chennai has gone on record saying that they could have certified the film even if it had been screened for them by Thursday morning.

They actually had 6 not 5.

6. Distributors not interested
Many distributors feel that, audiences are going to witness only a 3D model that resembles the superstar and not Rajinikanth himself. And, animation is still being considered as 'bomma padam'. So, they are not certain if the film will attract huge crowds like the Superstar's live-action films, and aren't ready to buy the film for a huge amount.

Let them release the movie as planned like how it happened for VR...

but unlike VR and VJ's Thalaivaa, Kocha isn't banned. :)

But if these US Distributors are selling tix and then cribbing about it later, they might as well screen it for US public as a solace. But I suspect the politics behind Eros's loss for Suriya's Maatraan & the balance 40C yet to be paid back to some bank. Though I do understand their sentiments and anger towards Eros and MediaOne.

Come 23rd (if they stick to the date), the amount of screens they managed to grab (now gone) will be limited. Godzilla, Xmen will eat them up so I suspect a limited release.

bill4u,

The Modi-JJ friendship took a hit recently when the later realised that she had a good chance of becoming the PM if BJP doesn't attain majority and she gets more than 30 seats in TN. From then she has been openly attacking Modi and his Gujarat model development. She even said 'TN is flourishing(?!) not because of Modi, but this lady'. Modi hit back saying he doesn't need the support of JJ or Mamata to become PM.

On a side note, MK Stalin responded to this Modi-Lady rhyming punch. He said 'TN flourishes not because of Modi or lady but my daddy'.

shocking unofficial reasons for Kochadaiiyaan's delay!

Aada theiryatha Silk-u Kaal-a Sulluku-nu cham !

What Mr. Speilberg predicted, an implosion in Hollywood Film Industry - I started to beleive it may hit TFI before. One side indie movies are not getting theatres, other side low budget movies are ramming hard to sustain a run and in the middle of all this, BlockBuster tagged movies are struggling to get a release. Past 2+ years the big budgeted or much awaited movies, are beeing delayed or even banned. And when they actually release after all the hurdles, they are not minting money as expected ! Where is that leading us - An implosion. Reasons may warry, but where we are heading, be assured there is a big wall waiting. Whether we bang our heads or turn back, only time can say. Market readers, analysts and film critics should take severe step towards these recurring events, rather than updating their tweeter handles with where a film shooting is happening.

Keeping in mind the postponment of Kochadaiiyaan, 3 things come to my mind :

1/ The government & the bureau governing the film panel must put forward a measure to abandon any legal action over the personels involved in a film if the complaint is not lodged prior to 15 days of announcement of the release. He didn't give me money, its my story, it affects our community, anything and everything will be heard only if the notice was issued well in hand and not at the neck of the time. On the other hand, before issuing a release visa, the bureau should ask for any pending legal issues pertaining to any hand involved in the film. This ensures the release of a film, and then if they wish, they can handle the legal affairs parallely. Not our, the audience, problem ! Its not only affecting the production houses, but they are taking the movie fans for granted. A fan booking his ticket is not worried about his money, if he had he wouldn't have come to the theatre in the first place. So refund is no way a fair deal.

2/ A production unit must first roadmap their project. There should not be a rush in anyway to process the basic requirement after obtaining the release date. The rush should be only on promotional activities. After a post production work is completed and many prints dispatched to certain locations, where is the opputunity for a "technical problem" to climb up. If thats the case, read the first sentence.

3/ A production house main task is adminstering the development. Once the development is over, they should calculatively progress its release. When the time to market is defined, thats the indicator for charting the time metrics and calculating the time to profit using previsional risk indicators. Using effective trading tools they must try to reduce the gap by moving further away from 'just too late'. Once the chart is ready, negociations must be done analysing well the gray areas before accepting a deal. If done properly the last minute problems with the end of the line buisness partners will go smooth and will yeild more. Its a big system, but we have management guided vehicles to travel smoothly. If a particualr distributor is asking a good propotion of the ticket pricing, does not mean that the screening should be stoped. This distributor should be over-rided, and there are ways to do that. And the loss inccured will be in the profit package. Now, going by the 23rd release, cutting the ducks stomach to get out the gloden egg scenario comes true.

So, its 23rd now. Fine ! Lets start again.

Well, I am not going to talk much about the visual that you just saw, taking into account its quality and I am very sure that most of you will feel the cartoonish presentation where Rajini is quite OK, and the rest dummies are series of dominos in motion. What I wish to share with you is @44-46 seconds. This 2 seconds you have to watch it several times. Eye motion is a bit of a draw back in mocap. Here they have extracted it and added it to the frame which clearly looks like a hard job done good, but not best. Again, I am eagerly waiting to see it on 3D with enhanced large screen that could project the color qualities to actually pin-point it. From what we see, the rest of the facial aspects were utterly missed and looks like a static face with eyes rolling with lip motion not in sink. Anyway, you got to comprise to get another thing out, and I feel that they have done a good job, keeping in mind our attempt using this technology.

No uncertainty this time around for Superstar's Kochadaiiyaan

A recent press release from the makers of Kochadaiiyaan has reassured one and all that all the post production work on the movie has been completed and that the film has been censored in all the 6 languages (Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi and Bhojpuri). The film is now ready for delivery and is releasing on 23rd May 2014 ‎in 2D & 3D versions.

Earlier, rendering ‎of 3D versions took longer than anticipated, which was the main reason for rescheduling the release of the film from May 9th to May 23rd. Besides there was a sudden demand for additional 2000 screens, all over the world, just 2 days before the release after seeing the extraordinary response for the advance booking world over (1,25,000 tickets were sold in just 2 hours in Chennai city only). To avoid any last-minute delay on the screening material reaching theatres world-over, the decision was taken to reschedule the film to 23rd May 2014.

Eros International are releasing ‎the movie worldwide along with Media One Global Entertainment.

[Thought I would say it]

If you are booking online or buying your tickets in the counter, make sure you get a seat not far from the screen to experience the best 3D effects. Positioing in the middle of the row can uplift the viewership if the cinema hall is equiped with fine sound system and a large screen enabled to project deep colors. Any digitally (re)mastered cinema hall should be fine.

As mentioned previously, the movie should be watched in cinema halls with screens that project the colors & pixels acurately. Thus, results may vary.

Funny to see the faceless dummies dancing behind as mechanics (LoL), and the decor seems to be from an alien war zone. But the two 3D models are amazing. And again, the models becomes stiff like wooden dolls between frames, should have fine tuned that.

Anyway quite excited to watch the movie, 24hrs to go !

Some more General Information :
We looked at what is a KDM (Key Delivery Message), a protected file, which holds the key and certificate information to unlock a DCP movie file. It is a small cryted file which is unique for each movie FILE and not each movie as a movie can have different versions. Its is sent as an attachment in an email to cinema halls and activates/deactivates itself during the specific coded dates. This is how the file looks like : (and we just apply it to the movie file which will then get highlighted in green, if it does not work (for many reasons) the movie file will rest higlight RED) :

So Paramashivan, you can rest assured (this time) that the movie will get released tomorrow 23/MAY. I will be watching it in another 7hours, and I will confirm it.

http://www.emirates247.com/entertainment/films-music/movie-review-rajinikanth-dazzles-in-kochadaiiyaan-with-master-strokes-2014-05-22-1.550044?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

Trust Tamil superstar Rajinikanth to spin something unusually extraordinary every time he appears on-screen. Whether it’s juggling his sunglasses in swift moves, or lighting a cigarette after throwing it mid- air, Rajinikanth is a persona unlike no other. He’s celebrated on-screen and off, and spinning off on his magic is his daughter’s part-history, part-fictional saga ‘Kochadaiiyaan’.

While the efforts taken to make a movie that uses “photo-realistic motion” is explained vividly in a short documentary as the curtain-raiser, and through its title song at the end, there’s a sense that it could’ve been a little more finer in texture and treatment. In parts it appears ordinary.

Considering there’s ample exposure to Hollywood animation, this experiment does feel a little amateur. Originally made in Tamil, its Hindi version jars occasionally due to the inconsistent lip-sync.

That said, what works in director Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin’s favour is the story. Although simple and predictable in parts, this story of bravery and honesty is entertaining.

Although Rajinikanth is remarkably captured through his mannerisms and voice, and lends versatility to three characters - Rana, Dharam and Kochadaiiyaan - his presence in flesh and blood is something his fans would desire most.

‘Kochadaiiyaan’ is the story about how mighty warrior Rana fights to restore his father Kochadaiiyaan’s lost glory.

Amitabh Bachchan’s rustic voice introduces us to the two warring kingdoms of Kalingpura and Kottaipattanam to the south of the country.

It’s after one of the many bloody battles between the two dynasties that we see a little boy running away from his brother, with blood smeared on his face. We learn the reasons only much later.

Soon, we meet Rana, who impresses us and the king of Kalingpura with his gallantry.

He goes on to win many battles for Kalingpura and gains the trust of King Mahendra Raj and his son Veera Bhadra. He then convinces them to wage a war on Kottaipattanam, using the men they had captured from that kingdom.

It’s only on the battlefield that Rana announces his solidarity to Kottaipattanam.

The betrayal wounds the king, who vows revenge.

While King Rishikodayan embraces Rana, the prince rewards his friend and his heroism with the title of the ‘commander in chief’.

Although Rana’s real intentions are revealed through a narrative that skips between the past and present, we empathise with his sacrifices and his resolve to ensure his father Kochadaiiyaan’s legacy remains untarnished.

Veteran actors Shobana, Sarathkumar, Jackie Shroff and Nassar lend their expressions and voice ably to essay key characters in this epic drama. And, so does Deepika Padukone as Princess Vadha.

While A R Rahman retains his flavour with the music, Saroj Khan, Raju Sundaram, Chinni Prakash and Shobana choreograph it impressively.

What’s most remarkable is how iconic actor Nagesh is resurrected through animation.

Despite the lack of technical finesse, the filmmaker deserves to be applauded for taking a step towards innovation and change, and setting the ground work for 'Rana'.

#Kochadaiiyaan ( 7.5 / 10 ) : A grand parade, lead by the terrific Thalaivar. Superb popcorn entertainment, brought down by the animation.

#Kochadaiiyaan : KSR's paperwork is top notch, especially the screenplay. Had this been an actual film, it would have hit the sky.

#Kochadaiiyaan (Tamil) Movie Review:
(This review is from 2 of our team members abroad. Our final review will be posted tomorrow night after we watch it in India.)
Our Score: 35/50
Genre: History | Action | Animation
Cast: Rajinikanth, Deepika Padukone, Actor Sarathkumar, Nasser, ...
Music: A.R. Rahman
Direction: SOUNDARYA RAJNIKANTH

First of all, this film is not just for kids to enjoy the animation. It has a clean and clear script with a good screenplay backed with fantastic music! And of course, our dear Thalaivar himself! What else do we need?

The script is simple and easily understandable even by the C-centre even though it was quoted to be complicated by a few sections of the media. Hats off to K.S.Ravikumar for writing a simple yet solid script.

Rajinikanth's name on the title card is welcomed by cheers and whistles from all around. What a comeback by the Superstar! His voice echoes off the walls in every scene. Even though it is clear that he has not performed in the difficult scenes, we feel proud and awed for being his fans. The biggest plus for the movie, obviously!

Deepika Padukone looks ravishing even in the poorly animated figurine. Sarathkumar, Nasser, Nagesh, Aadhi, Jackie Shroff, Shobana and the other characters take some time to get into our minds, but in the end, they stay etched! Once again, credits to K.S.Ravikumar!

The second (arguably) biggest plus point is the music! Be it songs or BGM, Rahman gives his all! His guitar-based BGMs are bound to bring whistles and cheers from all around. Fanfare guaranteed!

Animation is definitely not top-notch but this is a definite big step toward a better future.. 3D effects make us forget the glitches in animation. So, when you watch, go for 3D to improve your viewer experience. Soundarya & team should be applauded for trying this new era technology. We still have aeons to go, though!

On the whole, the film will definitely enthrall the audience in B and C centres, and the kids! For the A centre, the film is a little too simple and cliched, the only difference being "Performance Capture". However, Rajini-Rahman combo is bound to bring flocks to the theatres! And die-hard fans will not leave the halls disappointed!

Our Rating:

Script - 6/10
Performance - 7.5/10
Screenplay - 6.5/10
Music - 9/10
Direction - 6/10
Overall - 35/50

Staring : Rajinikanth, Deepika Padukone, Shobana, Nassar, Aadhi, Sarath Kumar, Rukmini, Jackie shroff, Nagesh

Director : Soundarya R Ashwin

Music : AR Rahman

Production : Eros International , Media One Global Entertainmen

Performance Capture Technology. Last seen in films such as Avatar and Tintin, it is now brought to our lands at the helm of Soundarya Rajnikanth and her team, in the name of Kochadaiiyaan. One cannot ask for a better lead for this first than the Superstar, as the sea of his fans get to see their hero in yet another tone.

Kochadaiiyaan is the epic saga of a commanding leader of the same name, and his legacy settling scores with the opponents. The movie begins (in ARR's voice-over) with Rana's ( Rajnikanth ) heroics, unveils its twists about a late chief ( Rajni again ), and brings itself to its final stage with a bang, ending in style.

Since this is a photo-realistic film, the performances had to be carried out within 4 walls, and that has been executed to near perfection by the veterans onboard. Rajnikanth's trademark style and mannerisms are recreated to an extent, as one notices that the maximum amount of graphical attention has been awarded to the Superstar. Thalaivar's voice is magic, and that is one reason why it is so heartening to watch him in any format possible. Performance wise, the artists have fit their bills, yet we ponder over how their natural expressions (especially the eyes) have not been brought out onscreen. Deepika in particular, is a joke.

Rajiv Menon's camera captures the characters in unique angles, with a special mention going to the fight scenes. Editing by Anthony is crisp, as he had to ensure the right cuts at the right places to avoid drags. Costumes are well etched, colorful and bright. Fight choreography is a lynchpin in a movie of this genre, and that has been taken care off in good proportions.

AR.Rahman's music plays a pivotal role in the film, as his BGM induces goosebumps at many places, thereby pushing the film to the next level. Claps to his sounds in Deepika's stunt sequence and the Shiva Thaandavam snippets. The songs have been picturised with fancy ideas, yet act as speed breakers in the second half.

If Rajnikanth is the Superman onscreen, it is KS.Ravikumar who stands in those shoes behind the screen. His paperwork is top notch, specially the screenplay which possesses very few dull moments. Though the story isn't a big bash, it is the screenplay which is well balanced with romantic, senti and thrill-filled happenings along with enough and more mass moments for the fans to cheer about. Soundarya's direction is apt, and the duo must be lauded for their creative ideas at many instants. Had this been an actual film, it would have touched the skies.

Kochadaiiyaan is by far a new attempt in Indian Cinema, and credit goes to the humongous crew for this film, which carves a new benchmark. However, the animation is a big flaw for the film, as it cracks a crater in its final show. Spare a thought since it's the first time, and go watch this spectacle for it does speak of some superb popcorn entertainment.

Oru paamara rasigana.. kandippa oru thadava paarkalam.. i felt bored on excessive songs.. But as a movie lover/critic lots of things to appreciate in this movie
1. As Thalaivar said first of its kind in Indian Cinema
2. Don’t expect the animation/vfx to be in Hollywood standard, with the limited budget and technology definitely it was far better than i thought.
3. Rocking BGM and Thalaivar’s voice is major plus.
4. With VFX, story and screenplay, fights helped to entertain throughout even though excessive songs.
On the whole I’m not disappointed ( I went with less expectations

Seen the film @ URVASHI Digital 4k Bangalore 2.30 Show.

Film was nice, even though the character was motion captured,Apart from Rajni .......Nasar,nagesh and Shobana was 50 percent to 60 percent looks like same (Ellarukkum agala kaal.Nadukkum pothu legs ovel shape la pooguthu).....BGM was good, screenplay also good (But some people says if it comes as real cinema it would be a great BB, that nd all too much,This story suits well for motion capture but not for cinema).

I feel irritated when seeing the film, coz even its a 3d movie its not brighter, screen looks very dull.Yen tu theriyala.i thought ithuku 2d la yee pathuirukkalamtu...but people said urvashi digital was good theater for 3D thats y i booked it.

Apart from that Rajni style,War sequence and some dialogue was good.Rajni Intro like Muthu ,ithula oru 5 KM deelava thaanduvaaru.
But over all 1 time watchable but surely better than Average (Eppadiyo Rajni,ARR and Screen play boar adikkama move pannitanga but Soundarya dont fly high that u ve succeeded people well know abt you and also u already told 50 to 100 freshers worked in this project due to their hard work the film came at this level its not coz of u alone).

I like to watch another time in gopalan mall r in other multiplex to see whether it has any difference clarity r not.

Superstar Rajinikanth starrer Kochadaiiyaan got released today across the globe. Initial reports from Tamil Nadu were positive but the film is getting negative talk in Andhra Pradesh and other states. Surprisingly, shows were cancelled in Mumbai due to the lack of minimum audience. Mumbai has got lot of Tamil population and their films are well received in the city. In Andhra Pradesh, morning shows occupancy was reported as less than 40 percent. This is the first time that Rajinikanth's movie got such a poor response in almost 2 decades. Trade analysts are predicting that Vikrama Simha might end up as a flop at the Tollywood box-office. Rajinikanth is a brand in India and his poster itself is enough to buy the ticket. But, the experimental movie made by his daughter Soundarya has not only got poor response but also the financiers and distributors are worried as they understood that their money is lost. KS Ravi Kumar has provided the story and AR Rahman is the music director for the film. Soundarya Rajinikanth has directed the film and Eros International has produced Kochadaiiyaan (Vikrama Simha)

Anyway watched the movie yesterday.....Movie could have worked, had it been a regular movie....Animation, color tone & all details lacked big time.
Way too many songs for an animation movie. Next few weeks are going to be very bitter for Rajini to swallow....Hope he has the strength to come out strong!!

Being an animation junkie, I hope to check out Koch when the ticket prices drastically reduce (I refuse to pay 20 USD+ for a poorly received 3D version.)

Anyways, had a friend (diehard Rajini fan), who went with his family for the 3D show. Occupancy was very low(80 ppl/300-400 seater) and most people dozed off either in the middle or last fight sequences. Like most people, he was severely disappointed with the outcome and people were mocking at the way it was presented. Too cartoonish and felt too doll-like. This was the public talk here (and the collections show it's way behind the Akkineni family saga, "Manam." Yes, Andhra movies make more money than Tamil, but the rave reviews this one got over Koch showed in occupancy.)

I think instead of doing a poor man's "Tintin", Soundarya could've have attempted "Kochadaiyaan" in the same manner Rajamouli did "Magadheera's" flashback sequence. You have the biggest financier from Hindi putting 125C down for a Rajinikanth starrer and you have KSR penning the story and dialogues. If Rajini himself was fit and rearing to go for Rana, then shoot it live like you've planned.

Watched this movie on Saturday evening at Golden Village cinemas in Singapore. Cinema was about 70-80% full. Yes, as we've heard countless times, the animation is lacking. There is something about the eyes that makes the characters feel souless and lifeless. Anyway, closeup shots are commendable.

*SPOILERS* The movie itself had a regular revenge storyline. SSR was fantastic as both Rana and Kochadaiiyaan though my personal favourite is the latter. Nagesh or more precisely whoever played him was splendid and the other actors sufficient. Special mention for dialogues (Especially SSR dialogues) and BGM. A nag I had with the film were the unrealistic action sequences, especially flying horses. I understand its a SSR movie and we got to suspend disbelief but the movie from early on already had been underfire and labelled as a kids movie. Such sequences just cement that sentiment. An example would be SSR's intro, where he jumps with 2 horses and the carriage across a valley hundreds of meters apart.

The ending left is wide open for a sequel. If KSR is brought back on along with ARR and a much larger budget, it could word. However, seeing the BO reports thus far, it seems unlikely a sequel will be made.

The movie is pretty bad. Lackluster animation, poor voice lip syncing, the lack of colorful characters and atmosphere. There are redeeming qualities though. Even though the animation wasn't great there were some parts that really looked good. So when it suddenly becomes good for a short time and then switch back to being poor you could really see the difference. The costumes did look pretty good. The animation on it along with the vibrant and colorful look was pretty impressive. I don't understand why they couldn't have done the same for the background environment. It just looked so empty and dull. Only during the song sequences did it change to more colorful and appealing to the eyes. I know the budget was limited but I feel like they could have done lot better than this with 125 crore.
Even though the graphics didn't impress much but the facial motion capture was pretty good up to a certain point. It wasn't really that grand but it did what it was supposed to do. However it was only really evident in certain people. Not sure what was going on there. It didn't really feel like a motion caption at work on Rajini but it was evident on Nasar.

Fine let's forget about the technical aspect of it; the story and the screenplay was a really big let down. It was not engaging at all. I could guess every scene before it happened. Every scene has been done before in other masala movies but in different settings. No real character development or character arcs. Some characters just come and go. What's the point of Sarath's character and the whole side plot with him. That went nowhere. We don't even see him after that little scene. Although I gotta say, that was a one badass princess but unfortunately she did nothing else after that first fight. she became just a little plot convenience afterward.

I am sorry for being so negative but I really wanted this movie to be good. That's what frustrates me. I hope they don't give up on these type of movies after this though. They just need to find a way to improve on this and maybe focus on the characters and story as much as they focus on the technical parts of it.

As an animation movie, the story has to be simple. So I don't see any issues with Story and screenplay. In fact, they are the plus points for the movie.

Animation quality and too many songs are the only negative.

Padam, good attempt madam. Soundarji's did a commendable job give the constraints. For India where they produce close to some 1500 movies every year. Animation/ Motion Capture etc etc.. won't work at the boxoffice unless its done by Hollywood Studio with a better budget and quality. First day First show here, it was about 60 human beings including me, capacity was about 350.

+ Thalivar
+ Story , Screen play
+ AR Raguman BGM (I was shaking my head in disbelief simbly super)
+ I actually liked 3 songs very well done.

- Amateurish Direction in most places
- Animation Quality
- Scary Deepika

As a die hard Thaliavar fan .. I have no problem in sitting through 2 hrs again. But as an animation lover, I should say this movie failed at multiple levels qnd end product doesn't satisfy neither adults nor kids. If there is a sequel, Soundarji should give direction to KSR or some other notable director. Just a suggestion.

Kochadaiiyaan box-office: earns Rs 42 crores gross worldwide in the opening weekend

Eros International has announced a blockbuster opening weekend of the futuristic fantasy event of the year 'KOCHADAIIYAAN' - The Legend, at the box office with a massive Rs. 42 crore gross worldwide.

Eros International released the film in 2D and 3D on May 23rd 2014, in 6 languages in over 3,000 screens worldwide. Tamil Nadu distribution was undertaken directly by Eros International.

Directed by Soundarya Rajnikanth Ashwin, the Photorealistic Performance Capture technology film has set a new milestone in the history of Indian cinema and set the box office ringing with a bumper opening weekend and grossed Rs. 30 crore in India and Rs. 12 crore overseas. Markets with Rajni stronghold like UAE, Malaysia and Singapore have shown superlative performance. With pre-sales from satellite rights in multiple languages, audio and music rights exploitation, brand tie ups and other income, the film is well on its way to cross Rs 100 crores in revenue just after the opening weekend.

Commenting on the successful opening of the film, Nandu Ahuja, Senior V P, India Theatrical, Eros International Media Ltd said, "Thalaivar fans have given huge thumbs up to the film which showcases the charisma of their favorite superstar in a never seen before avatar. Advance booking for the opening weekend especially in Tamil Nadu were outstanding and true to Rajni films, the shows opened as early as 5.00 a.m. to capacity audiences with the build-up commencing the night before. As the film continues to attract huge numbers with its high octane action, photo realistic animation and of course Rajinikanth's larger than life persona, we expect the film to continue wowing audiences."

Commenting on the film's performance overseas, Pranab Kapadia, President, Marketing and Distribution, Eros International Plc, added, "Fans of the superstar across the world have appreciated the film and it has opened extremely well in the overseas markets."

Jyoti Deshpande Group CEO & MD of Eros International Plc said "We are delighted with the superb response to the film which has been a labour of love over the last two years. We thank the critics and the audiences that have helped build such a wonderful momentum to the film and given recognition to Soundarya's vision and talent. We are seeing an overwhelming demand for a prequel or a sequel. Watch this space. But for now enjoy Kochadaiiyaan in 2D or 3D with your entire family, in a big screen near you, in a language of your choice".

Kochadaiiyaan is an epic dramatization of good versus evil starring South Indian megastar Rajinikanth in a double role in a larger than life depiction. Also starring in the grand production is leading lady Deepika Padukone together with South India's leading stars R. Sharath kumar, Nazar, Aadi, Shobana and Rukmini. Providing the musical score to this magnum opus is Oscar-winning composer A R Rahman.

I understand you are a hardcore fan of Rajni. But why do you sound like an alter ego of Soundarya Rajnikanth? People in my circle who managed to watch the movie didn't have anything good to say about it. And normally I don't rely on fans' reviews for any star, especially on the first 3 days. So I thought I will wait till Monday so that more reviews from neutrals/family audience come in.

Super Star title card semma... When A R Rahman oda voice starts with karma veeranea... Goose bumps... Thalaivar intro as usual mass.. Thalaivar's styles captured well... Awesome music... I felt 3D visuals are delightful at parts... Objects in the back drop of the scene are enacted well... Story, screenplay and dialogues a big thumbs up.. Biggest let down is character and objects animation... At times it looks like kocha bheem... But given the budget and resource, great work by Team.. Soundarya deserves a big applause... Thalaivar dialogues are mass... Lots of songs but I liked it.. Few stunts are good... Watch it in 3D.. I enjoyed it a lot..

Watched the movie tonight, loved it. Kudos to Soundarya for such an attempt, those talking about the CG effects should realize it's a first attempt. Given the kind of budget and subject she has more than justified it. Saw it in Sathyam and didn't like the audio output, not sure what but it wasn't the usual feeling. As for the picturization Kochadaiiyaan rudra thandavam + Matram ondru than are my picks. Oh the 3D experience adds to the overall movie landscape, will probably watch it one more time.

Overseas

KOCHADAIIYAAN, the much-awaited Rajinikanth starrer, has fared exceptionally well in Malaysia in particular. Is good in USA, UK and Australia

http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/box-office/overseas/

North India

While HEROPANTI posed stiff competition for the Rajinikanth starrer KOCHADAIIYAAN in the North circuits [Hindi version], the Tamil version of the film took Tamil Nadu by storm from the commencement of the first show itself. A Rajinikanth film is considered an event in South and the stupendous response, coupled with a strong word of mouth, should ensure a glorious innings for the film at the BO.

Nonetheless, the BO performance of the Hindi version of KOCHADAIIYAAN is below par in the Hindi belt. As highlighted in our 'BO Update' on Friday, the postponement of its release date affected its business to an extent. Also, animation films produced in India haven't found whole-hearted mandate from the audience thus far. Having said that, the enormous business of the Tamil version should compensate for the lack of its Hindi version.

For a Rajnikanth starrer, #Kochadaiiyaan UK opening week-end box office collections disappoint. Hoping it picks up in the coming days.

Although #Kochadaiiyaan UK box office is 'average/good start', movies such as #Jilla, #Arrambam & #Thalaivaa achieved a bigger opening.

Ajay @uktamilbo
#Kochadaiiyaan may not be able to reach the UK Top 10 list due to a slow start. It needs another £122,000 for Top 10 and £45,000 for Top 25

Finally, got the ticket and watched. Let me not get into the technicalities. The animation/motion capture was no different from the EA sports cricket games. Rajni and Deepika almost resembled the originals but the eyes were wavering all through and it took away whatever credit the CG team deserved. However, after 20 minutes, you get used to it. Also, I found the second half of the movie was better than the first half wrt animation. May be they rushed through the first half.

The story and screenplay were gripping enough to keep the audience engaged. The twists at regular intervals and voice of Rajni carries the film. Special mention to ARR's rocking bgm. Hope he releases the OST soon.

On the whole, the movie is definitely watchable. I only wish it was made as a live motion film.

Total canpees.
Whats the actual budget of this movie? I remember during Vishwaroopam days, every article about its box office performance had the line '95 crore mega budget movie' just to prove that even 100cr revenue (which it did collect in less than a week) wouldn't really make it a blockbuster. Kochadaiyaan, as per some reports collected 42cr in 3 days and Taran Adarsh says this collection will help it compensate for the losses incurred in North India

I thought the animation wasn't bad, Soundarya has delivered a decent fair however the cliffhanger / abrupt ending could have been dealt properly and yes Rahman Ji was the captain propelling the movie with an impeccable score and without him the movie would have severely faltered. If the movie was live action, then I can't imagine how high the status of ssr would have elevated amongst the masses.

Btw Rahman ji fans will have another treat this year as Rahman Ji has taken the initiative to compile the bgm of the film and release it as audio. Highway, kochadaiiyaan, raunaq, million dollar arm, lekar hum deewana dil, kaaviya thalaivaan, ai, 100 foot journey, rasayana rojakkal and a few other projects prove the weather forecast will be under the musical storm throughout this whole year. Time to soak up all these beauties, best year to become an arr fan if u aren't already

The movie is pretty bad. Lackluster animation, poor voice lip syncing, the lack of colorful characters and atmosphere....
Fine let's forget about the technical aspect of it; the story and the screenplay was a really big let down. It was not engaging at all... No real character development or character arcs. Some characters just come and go.

I agree with all of this. Except for Kochadaiyaan himself, no character had an ounce of personality, and many sequences were so abrupt and rushed that it was hard to have any involvement.

huge flop in kerala & andra pradesh.....

in kerala , some theaters terminated the movie after first day itself and 60% of screens removed movie after 4 days...now only playing
in major centers like tvm , kochi , calicut with minimum 40-50% audiance....siva karthikeyan's man karatte get much more huge opening in kerala
than kochadiyan..

in AP area , movie released in a huge number of theaters with 2d & 3d...but b , c class theaters of AP removed due to lack of common audiance..
A class theaters have avg opinin & collection

in Banglore , decent collection from karnataka ... 6 versions of the movie released there...kochadiyan tamil 2d & 3d , kochadiyaan hindi 2d&3d , vikrama simha 2d & 3d

Ajmal: Is this your own ORIGINAL STORY?

According to news papers, manam (original telugu flick) collected 5.3 crores whereas the dubbed Rajni movie collected 2.8 crores.

What do you mean by "huge" and "flop"?

In telugu Kochadiayaan collected 2 crores which is huge flop considering the release in more number of theatres in AP then TN..In AP it will end with 4-5 crores which is disaster. In KL its a disaster right from day 1.
Just check the collection of Endhiran,Dasavatharam,Sivaji,Vishwaroopam in AP,KL..Endhrian tops the list with 30C..Compare 30C with 5C..In KA,KL Vishwaroopam tops the collection followed by Endhiran..
In Mayajaal 1st day 100 shows,2nd and 3rd day 70 shows, from monday it reduced to 12 shows which tells the story.
Media stated in 3 days Kochadaiyaan collected 42 crores and also mentioned the collection is close to 100C including television rights..:) Did they think television rights is 50C+ for this animation movie which wont look gud in TV..

The film will end with 80C collections overall(In TN alone 50C) which is big loss for 125C budget with so much marketing from soudarya and co..
I dont know why rajni fans are so angry and not accepting the truth..the same thing happened for Kuselan and Baba...

Happy that Soundarya / Rajni tried to do something new in tamil film industry.

Whenever somebody try new things in film industry it may not be a instant commercial success, may be bit delayed.
Really laudable effort from Soundarya ..

It would have been much better than Endhiran, it would have broken Endhiran's Records! IMHO

In a fortnight, the Telugu version grossed ₹3.5 crore in Nizam, ₹1.6 crore in Ceded, ₹1 crore in Vizag, ₹95 lakh in East and West Godavari, ₹75 lakh in Guntur and ₹7 million in Krishna. The film grossed ₹250 million in Andhra Pradesh in its lifetime.

Before enthiran 10A holds the record collections of 25C in AP.Now enthiran is holding the record with 30C which is very difficult to beat.
I am not here to compare rajni and kamal but to make it clear Kochadaiyaan collections is very poor in AP compared to Enthiran/Sivaji/10A/VR..Rajni and kamal has very good market in AP but need to give entertaining films to audience..for instace till 1998 kamal's direct telugu flicks sagara sangamam, swathi muthyama,Indrudu Chandrudu,Subha Sankalpam were BB and lot of dubbed movies till 1998 were superhits..from 1999 till 2005 ie from heyram till virumandi is a dull period for KH and films bombed at BO in AP,infact many films bombed in TN as well during that period..
But his films started to do well from 10A,UPO,VR as it happens in TN as well..

Coming to kochadiayaan hardcore rajni fans will like the movie as its their thalaivar movie but to reach AP,KL audience and non-rajni fans it has to be entertaining/enjoyful like sivaji/enthiran and thats what everyone expect..
The movie has to be liked by everyone then only it will become a Super hit/BB otherwise it will be flop/average or at the most hit in TN alone which is applicable for rajni as well which he said in Kuselan movie itself..
Non-rajni fans,AP,KL,KA audience didnt like baba, kuselan and it flopped..

The flopping of bad movies is men behaving in accordance with the tao while the success of bad movies is the universe in disequilibrium, and who knows what calamities may ensue?

I do hope that Kochadaiyan flops so that the powers that be realize that a well-made story is more important than technical gimmicks.
