1. The song overall easily outweighs his faults. I do understand that you can't stand his singing and that comes in the way. Edhukkum solren.
2. Wonder of wonders, the song sounds different in Telugu. Shaan is a much better singer easily and he sings in shruthi, with all the brigaas etc... Yet, doesn't feel right (song-oda mood veraya irukku). Oru velai na Tamil la modhalla kettu vechadhunaala kooda irukkalaam

Reg 'vAnam mellakkeezhiRangi', the whole song is conceptualized considering the voices as "two more instruments" IMHO. Even in my first listen I felt that way as the very start by IR is so "weak". The same "weak" singing is maintained thru out the song and an apt female singer is put in place.

Some felt the extra 'tharuNam' kind of odd. Actually, it's not. In reality, there should be TWO MORE tharuNams :-) (tharuNam, tharuNam, tharuNam, tharuNam completes the bar, rAsA fills the last two words with instruments / drums).

That song is a mini concert - with words used as mere fillers and human voices used as two more (sophisticated) instruments :-)

To me, I like the first part of pudikkala maamu than the second innings. What a prelude! The love between guitar and drum is too lovely. The way singer says 'Padikkira college' as second, third, fourth attempts - pallai naRanaRa-nnu - he simply acted in singing.

The first interlude and saranam - Raja just let's the drum flow like river water. The drummer might have experience the heavenly feel throughout the song.

Second interlude - nammooru saappaadu. Initial portion from 4:13 till 4:32 reminds me varuthu varuthu of TTT. The Sax rowsu with Karthik at last attempt of "antha veethi. paththaathe" - is Raja's youthfulness. Mind blowing.

No complaints. She does get to the pitch correct and no shrill or screech, it goes little thin but that is hardly noticeable and no embarrassment, neither it takes away any joy, it is even sweet at higher pitches. Overall nicely balanced voice. Not sure exactly what else you felt in her high pitches. Thank God he didn't use Chinmayi or Bela again in this song. Both of them have very thin voice at higher pitches.

Another biggest plus for Ramya is she emotes perfectly well, unlike Bela Shinde, who only concentrates and worries all the time on getting the language correct, missing the soul which is the emotions. We can clearly hear her in every word she sings. Ramya is bang on in this aspect, mainly because she is already our girl. Sunidhi, no comparison.

Nope! These lines express the "adarththi" of the passion /lust of the 'thalaivi'! very very satiating!

தலைவியின் காதலின் உச்சம் - வள்ளுவன் சொன்னது போல "ஊடுதற் காமத்திற்கின்பம் அதற்கின்பம் கூடி முயங்கப் பெறின்!" - வள்ளுவன் காமக் கிழவன்! அவன் வழி வந்த கவிஞன், காதற் பாடல் எழுதும் போது, காதலியின் நெஞ்சக் "கூடல்/கலவி தாபத்தை" எழுதுவதுதான் சரி. தலைவனின் நகவரி தீட்டும் கோலங்களில், அவளுள் இன்ப ஊற்று சுரக்கிறது..பிறகு..கிறக்கத்தில் வேறென்ன செய்வாள்/சொல்வாள்?

Absolutely! These days, lyricists are as good, and prepared to write as well - but the problem is with the Music composers, who want to drown out the lyrics and behave like musical equivalent of jerks.

So, the Late 70s and 80s magic, where both the Music and the Lyric - co-existed beautifully - is not being re-created.

The word 'nyaabagam' - rightly points to her 'memory' she is living in denial of. And the whole episode of 'ponnu paakaradhu' made her remember the past which
she wants to forget - the magic trick is to slide this in in a song which is all 'cheerful' on the outside.. The music doesnt give the space for more 'reflection' as director might have wanted to
keep that in shroud for 'shock value' and suspense - but lyricist brought that context subconsciously.
Much like the whole silappadhigaaram song about the 'flag that flutters in an unwelcoming way to kovalan family' into madurai.. so in this regard .. geno, vaali gets 10 points and you get none...

Please try to justify "thirumbaathu en gnaabakam" in this context - it is like sand inside the shoes, full of "uruthal". It definitely does not properly convey whether "she wants to forget" or if "she wants to remember" her past.

That's the point - gnAbakam together with "thirumbAthu en...." completely loses the focus.

vAli gets 10/10 for "ithO enthan theivam munnALE" song. But for this - he manages just about 6/10 :)

Finally listened to Kumki songs while catching the audio release funtion in Vijay (Nth repeat). The Haricharan song is good. And ShreyaG breezes through in her song. Perfect example of a singer elevating an ordinary tune / arrangements. Packs so much in each and every line she sings. And perfect thamizh diction to boot. Unbelievable she is!! Heard she has also sung in dimman's two other albums released recently.

yes colour processing was the trick i guess :-) .......oru kaalathula, bombay was the dream destination for tamil filmmakers like mani, vasanth, kadhir but good to see we have come down a bit southwards to bangalore.......i wish we had a hi-tech city in TN as well with moderate climate......coimbatore coimbatore, was the one until mallus and 1998 bomb blasts spoiled it all :-( .......

What an oozing romance ! Have listen to this song MANY times and know the lyrics by heart but every time I listen, it gives a totally different experience because of its 'freshness' even after almost two decades since its release. Rahman-Vairamuthu combination is one of the bestest things that could ever happen to music lovers. SPB's 'kurumbu' expressions through out the song complements the lyrics so well ! Sujatha too does a very pleasing job with her beautiful voice.

Songs like this powerfully tell us that melody is the main thing to pizhinjify the heart! Add a fantastic singer, it's double effect! (When you don't have such a singer, use a lead instrument or a bunch of violins but still it's the melody that moves the heart).

I think Harris is more consistent than Yuvan in giving hits. But, whatever hits Yuvan gives have a longer shelf life than those of Harris. Yuvan's hit songs are like biriyanis with more leg pieces. The ones from harris have very little meat but have more masalas that provide instant taste.
