Moondru per moondru kadhal is rocking to the core. If you just remove NEPV, this is the best of 2012 by a mile. Aaha kadhal is the only routine song and Kadhal enthan kadhal to some extent. All other songs are very different from usual songs. On par with rhythm and poovellam kettuppar.

I think we should only choose songs that have been released this year even if the move they're from has/has not been released. There were many unknown gems in 2011 that had to be omitted in my last year's selection because their movie was released this year. e.g. Kazhugu and Pesu which has not even released yet.

Yet.
I care a damn for the setting - is a conscious choice. It obviously has worked for so many people.
But it has left me completely befuddled.

adiyE, keechan - how is any of this going to work in a Tamil movie!!

I mean, they are catchy and all that. But the song-setting, lyrics-singing disconnect is something I am not able to palate. And it is not merely incidental. It is a conscious choice by Rahman-Mani Ratnam.

Ludicrous statement!! Even today I do look out for the perfect sync of a song on the rural settings but ARR pushes the boundaries and coverts the listeners in to a different zone quite a fascinating trend that he draws in. All today's contemporary genres/music/musician and listeners has evolved to such changes.

He has revolutionized the folk music in the past and its hardly surprising to me. I sincerely wish ARR does more tamil films but his collaboration with others are hopeless.

hahahah! :P :P i loved the 1st 2 lines, they are extremely funny yet it does makes sense...

i myself am not very happy with Kadal album being soo, too westernized. I think sometimes, its always good to listen to our very own Indian music. We dont need constant western musics to flood out our music industry. When i said Indian music, i didnt mean the dapangukutus, but good Tamil melodies with Good indian classical/folk instruments. Kadal no doubt a trend setter, but im quite tired with always listening to 'international' music from ARR, one after another. I was seriously looking forward to Kadal album having atleast 3-4 good Tamil melodies, after decades, but ended up with so many western-like numbers instead. Moongil Thootam is my only pick. That no doubt, has to be the best Melody this year, thank God for that. Nenjukule's Unplugged version was more pleasing, having less music in it. The CD version somehow i felt sounded messy and rushing due to its slightly faster tempo. Maybe i felt this way because of hearing and loving the unplugged version 1st and allot. Other tracks are enjoyable too. As an album, its original and quality, but my only question, why still western pattern is being preferred?? Ippadi senjathan music ah? Illaina mudiyatha... Hopefully one day, ARR will do a full fledge clean Tamil album + fusion at its needed place, like those days.

Moongil thottam is the only song I could warm up to.

ARR pushes the boundaries and coverts the listeners in to a different zone quite a fascinating trend that he draws in. All today's contemporary genres/music/musician and listeners has evolved to such changes.

He has revolutionized the folk music in the past and its hardly surprising to me.

bang on.....yes, Rahman's template of folk/music for semi-urban mileu is the template thats widely used nowadays......be it kangal irandal in tamil, dhol yaara dhol(devD) of punjab and many other mainstream folk/semi-urban song in India now, its unmistakably Rahman stamp......even a lot of folk-rock fusion attempts of SEL, Euphoria, Silk route have always traversed the path Rahman had.........and yes, we want him to push envelope further - i would have committed suicide if Kadal album only had a "thaalatudhe vaanam", "koduthhadhellam koduthaan" and some konkan-goan style hoy hoy yaa hummings.......i can better accept even if its inappropriate for the settings, mileu, myailu etc than settling for the mundane

Even today :) they are in the most wanted list as we can see with the success of Murasu and Sun Life.

Composing music for a film is highly demanding. But how demanding can it get? MGR and Sivaji were not just mass heroes with a terrific fan following, but they had tremendous political clout as well. Their passions, policies and fans need to be satisfied. The producers were very powerful guys - not simple thozhiladhibars, and the directors were well established. They need to be satisfied. The leading poet Kannadasan had his own political inclinations. His words should be conveyed properly to his satisfaction. And a highly potential music director mama KVM was till around making wonderful music in the oppurtunities he got.

Forget fulfilling their requirements, MSV just went beyond that. And he ensured that he was in demand despite the situation. aaNmayin adayaalamaamana TMS kural mudhal menmayin adayaalamaana KJY kural varai ellaame avar isayil miga arumayaaga oliththana. Adhu oru maaperum isai saamrajyam endral migaiyalla.

If we take “andha naal nyaabagam”, the situation is a highly challenging one. Neither romantic, nor philosophical. Not fully about friendship, but needs to bring the nostalgia in a peculiar location. Add the demands of Sivaji, AVM and Krishnan-Panju and imagine the pressure. But pressure is for cookers to whistle. The master simply delivers an extraordinary song.

Fully agree. MSV was instrumental in creating singing legends in tamil cinema like TMS, SPB, PBS, P Susheela, KJ Yesudass, S Janaki, LR Easwari, Vani Jayaram, etc. As SPB said in an interview that MSV not only introduced him to film music but also mapped the path that he should go by. What do you call someone who was the generator of legends?

pAdal thoguppu = album

Oh NEPV is doubtlessly one of the best albums I have heard in a very long time.
Naan uchchakattamA Nandalala range-ku edhirpArththEn - with one great song a la Oorndhu oorndhu and a couple of good ones and that's about it. Boy, was I wrong! I had to go all the way to VirumAndi, Kandukondein etc to remember a Tamil album that made me this rapturous.

This is next only to TiS in terms of the number of listens in my car. The last film album I was this taken by was Dev D.

There is SO much happening in each of the songs- the dramatic bursts, the 'tug at hearstrings', the sheer grandness in scope etc. These just 'hit the spot' so frequently in so many songs in one album! And there is a sense of rarity and completeness that you feel at the end of a 'round'.

I never ever believed I could listen to Yuvan's crooning in my life. I have fought with people here and elsewhere about him. It is crazy how likable he is - not just tolerable- for instance, in the places around 'innum innum ella tholai dhoorathil etc.' The entry of trumpets in the second half of pudikkala maamu is pachydermal stomping. The second interlude in the sAindhu sAindhu, as a piece of music - ranks among his, and thus the, very best of all time.

One helluvan album.

I still do not understand how people try to even think about listening to sAindhu sAindhu where Yuvan just killing the whole essence of the music with his voice. I do listen.. but its Telugu version.

pAdal thoguppu = album

One helluvan album.

Sorry if you are mistaken. AKKV is indeed short of my expectations could have been much more better.

Paradesi (again VM) is miles ahead of AKKV for its rustic approach and hard-hitting thematic content. In fact lot of overtime have gone into this soul-stirring songs even pushes aadukalam deep down.

Its too early to ascertain still these are the only two (2013) album stands out compared to the rest.

Excellent. The best ballad I have heard in years. That guy on piano was marvelous. Not to degrade any other musician, Illayaraja music are the only tunes that match any format.
These guys should find a producer and get an album out on their own rather than coming on Vijay TV.
Hope the same combo do a performence on "Uravugal Thodarkathai"
[If they have already done it, please post the link]

2011 saw him do "Santhikatha Kangalil", Last year, we saw him do "Poovaname" and this year he raises the bar to a whole new level with "Poo Manam".

An out and out Sharreth Ji number, great melody, great percussion, great SONG... Sharreth Ji is only competing against himself and is outdoing himself at every opportunity.

I have taken the criticism on board (see: http://www.futureproducers.com/forums/production-techniques/showcase-your-music-give-receive-feedback/my-first-dubstep-feed-feed-434966/) and tried to rectify it. I am posting a new mastered version. I have made the volume lower on the vocals and also introduced a build up to the beat. I have also included a rap. I hope you like it and if you still feel I could enhance it more then please share your thoughts.

I have uploaded a video to youtube and and also put a free mp3 download on soundcloud.
