Mohanlal, in the late 80's and early 90s perhaps gave some of the finest movies that India has seen...(my opinion). Movies like Chitram, Bharatham, Surya Gayathri, TP Balamakumaran MA had Lal essay the role of the common man, the normal guy next door, a caring brother, a regular husband...And again in my opinion, nobody has matched him in these kind of roles.
Kreedam for example. Lal's greatness can be understood by looking at how bad the remakes in Tamil and Hindi were.
Having said that, I would rate Kamal's performance in Papanasam a notch higher than Lal's Drishyam.
George Kutty was a role tailor made for Lal. But I felt that it did not bring out the best in him. The master actor just breezed through his role. Nothing special for him. The story and screen play were the real heroes in Drishyam.
Bharatham would be example, where Lal did something extraordinary in his common man's role. It was a scintillating performance which haunted me for weeks after watching the movie. Karthik who himself is not a bad actor, would have realized that there some roles that only Mohanlal can do, when he reprised Lal's in Seenu (the pathetic Tamil remake of Bharatham).
The reason I think that Kamal's performance is better, is because he has truly breathed a lot of life into Suyambulingam. The scenes where Suyambu assures his scared daughter that he will protect her, hugs her and then looks at his wife with utter helplessness and also fear, looked much more realistic than the George Kutty. One would expect a father in that situation to behave exactly like that.
The final scene too. People say that Lals' performance reflects George Kutty's inherent coldness. I don't know. Again, here I felt Kamal's expression and words showing his guilt were much more realistic. Though Suyambu has a ruthless calculating side, he also can empathize with the feelings of another father.
As a Mohan lal fan, I would say that Kamal has outdone Lal in this movie.
Rajini first choice nu director ninaicha was that an insult to Kamal or the other way around? y this fight? Enthiran was first scripted for Kamal and then came to Rajini..... He gave it his own flavor..... Kamal would have pulled a different trick if he had acted in that..... athu vera oru vithathula nalla irunthirukkum......avlothan.... like kamal himself said..... it is like how various singers recite the same song in a concert......
Had kamal also refused papanasam, jeethu would have gone for Sarathkumar (50+ heroes vera yaarum ippo nybagathukku vara maatengranga)
The issue of who was the first choice and not - was brought here by whom?
What matters is who did the role and how it was treated and how it has been received by both critics and the public..
'Papanasam''s success is reminiscent of how 80s movies like 'Poovizhi vaasaliley', 'Aan paavam' and 'Nayagan' became sensational hits ONLY through word-of-mouth and not any publicity stunts, which every biggie star (including Kamal) these days is guilty of…
Jeetu Joseph and co deserve all the praise for bringing the crowds back to halls purely based on cinematic content and performances - a hugely welcome sign…..
At last even Outlook India gives a positive review!
http://www.outlookindia.com/article/papanasam/294804
Contrary to what many have opine about Gautami's role, the review says "...with Gautami giving him graceful company. The surprise is the genteel, suffering Anant Mahadevan. Ajay Devgan has quite a task ahead as he heads the cast for the Hindi version…."
When the movie is good, everyone (including North Indians) appreciate unreservedly.
Here's what the same reviewer in Outlook feels about Vishwaroopam:
Vishwaroop kickstarts like a comic book. The ditsy slapstick routine in the midst of gory villainy in NY tells you: don’t take this seriously. But only for a brief while. As the scene shifts to bleak Afghan landscapes and Al Qaeda training grounds, the stereotype “Islamic terrorist” emb*edded in our collective consciousness post-9/11 gets reinfor*ced onscreen—the bru*tality, ort*h*odoxy, obduracy, it’s all there. It’s a cruel world where “zubaan koi bhi ho, boli jehadi hi honi chahiye”. Severed limbs, lifeless bodies, spurting blood—you wonder why you are seeing these killing fields images all over again, in yet another film. Meanwhile, our hero Tau*fik finds Buddha-like enlightenment. He is the one good Muslim taking on the many rogues from his community to save New York from the “dirty bomb” even as the rather daft FBI agents ask him, “Jeez man, who are you?” He is the one good Muslim who “redeems” the many who have gone astray.
Cut to Hansal Mehta’s Shahid. Based on the life of activist-lawyer Shahid Azmi, who was allegedly killed for defending Mumbai bombing accused Fahim Ansari, this too begins with protracted seq*uen*ces of Shahid in jehadi camps. But unlike Vishwaroop, it settles down to focus on the dilemmas of a lower middle-class Muslim family. No demonising, exoticising or romanticising. “My atte*mpt was to humanise,” says Mehta. After a few devastating episodes—riots, jeh*a*di camps, jail—Shahid prefers the path of the law, fighting for the accused in court, to going on Taufik-like revenge mode. The gentle Shahid stands on the fringes, and Vishwa*roop shows how the heavy-handed, sweeping Muslim stereotypes dominate our mainstream cinema.
First 20 minutes test the patience and the film really starts after the daughter-Gautam-Villan scene. From then onwards, the screenplay is so racy and it was neatly edited. Had he trimmed that as well, it would become a perfect murder investigation movie. This is not a major flow but a minor P3/P4 issue. Gautami was a P2 bug.
I am a fan of murder investigation documentaries like NNT, Solved etc where the context is set within the first 5 mins. So, I felt the first 20 mins can be trimmed to make it even more racier.
Th first 40 minutes are not only required to set up the plot and charecter, it is also very much needed for the later half of the film:
1. Kamal digging the pit for natural fertilizer
2. Kamal and Kalabavan Mani's tiffs in tea shop for several reasons.
3. Sequence of police station building and related cement storage in his godown
4. Sequence which tells kamal is always late to home as he is at office
You take out even one of these, the second half will have a plot hole. Its so tightly knit.
When we read a novel, high points of a novel come only in few pages - approaching a work of art needs some patience and little effort from the viewer.
Saai - it can be told in less time also.

Some more...
5. Suyambulingam watches soft porn as well. That might be another factor contributing to his guilt. He probably will never be able to bring himself to watch one after the incident.
6. His well-known stingy nature, which he would use later to explain his keeping all the bills. Also to justify him not having a mobile.
7. Habeas Corpus reference to hint the character's learning from cinema and to make Tea shop owner tell that in interrogation, giving a turning point in IG's thought process
8. Pasamalar scene to hint the audience on sentimentality of the character, which would invariably feel the pain (even the enacted ones) of the other as his own. A sobbing mother and a helpless, sad father in front of him, he is definite to feel their pain and behave the way he did.
9. His tiffs with the constable, growing enmity and also to infuse suspicion when he stops doing that post the incident
Cant resist one more Mohanlal post, sorry.
Papanasam must be the first Lal remake that has matched or outshone the original. With the exception of Pandiayarajan & Sve.Sekar's Kadhanaayagan (NadodiKaathu in Malayalam), all previous attempts to remake Lal movies in Tamil or Hindi were disasters in my opinion. Chandramukhi and Muthu will be considered okay films, as long people have not seen the original Lal versions. Cheenu, Aaha and Kreedom were insults to Lal, I think.
Superb! Reading all this, one gets much more assured that its ONLY Kamal who is deservingly fit to remake Papanasam! Not just becos of the fine layers he added to the tamil version, but also that its only he as an actor who has his films stories well knit and connected throughout. Any small thing shown in initial parts of his films will never go waste. they will form the reason of some events happening in the later part of the film.
Not only that, its KH who always campaigns for less no of songs. and even if more songs, he will make sure they are part of narrative and not just songs for commercial heck. Even in UV, each and every song had a reason and was part of the narration. Likewise, original Drishyam itself had songs well blent to the movie and didnt stand out!
If Papanasam was a Gold Script by Jeethu, which is very rare status to attain, Kamal added layers and made it Platinum!!
Papanasam Rocking in TN and also in couple of overseas too in BO! Just see the tweets! Seems more shows in 2nd weekend in many places and Bahubali not able to touch Papanasam in most places!!``
https://twitter.com/KamalHaasanFans
And see that biased BO analysts like sridhar thollai not even uttering the real BO status of Papanasam and totally concentrating on other movies only. When a KH film is rocking in BO, he will never open his mouth to say that. Such a biased media
Papanasam again!
Why?
Because it's soooooooooo good!
Checked several cinemas here in Malaysia ...most are packed, and that's why had to go to different cinema than my normal one.
Super packed and for the second time after Dasavatharam) audience clapped at the end!
Shocking since its already 10 days.
Guess it's going to break all previous box office records!

Ravi Ravi, are you stalking me on Facebook?
It is very simple..
Producers want to cast super star... But Jeethu had KH in mind..
Sripriya approached Kamal for acting in the movie. KH watched the movie and suggested some changes..
Georgu kutty's change to Suyambulingam was suggested by KH.. also suggested to change the climax bit emotional.
Recommended Jeyamohan as dialogue writer and Suka for properly pronouncing the Nellai Dialect...
Simple movie, Super script, 35 days of shooting... Superb output... KH would have got the message of the TN cinema watching crowd...
Sometimes I feel that if Kamal's involvement is restricted to acting with a few tips on the story line and other places, it would be enough to result in a good outcome (box office wise). I understand that box office result is not everything. But this is perhaps the central message of Papanasam's success. Basically, just find a great story (that is suitable for Kamal) and a confident director to helm it (preferably someone who can "own" the story) and the rest will take care of itself.
Even the most vilest of Kamal haters would secretly admit that he has set for himself very high standards while leaving others far behind...
Scripts like that of Dhrishyam come once in a blue moon - Vishal Bharadwaj, Pankaj Mishra, Mysskin, are some of the newbees who can probably come up with scripts to satisfy Kamal..
Exactly. I have no idea either why some are taking this personally .. Its not a big deal for the script to reach Rajini first who didn't find it apt for himself and got to Kamal after.
Actually there were talks that time about Vikram expressing interest in doing the remake.
Anyways, all's well now.
Agree that Drishyam script was very good and suits Kamal to a T.
Problem is when he directs or gets closely involved (with his own story etc), the final product lacks something (hard to pinpoint precisely). It does not satisfy others much beyond his fan base. It is not that he sets a high standard but I think the real problem is, he may have different sensibilities, level of thinking etc. There should be a hook that connects him with the audience. If the audience is left behind, result is not good. So he should take care not to leave the audience far behind. I am sure that is not his intention also. But, Papanasam is a huge contrast to UV. No doubt about it. People's reaction, comments for PN is very different, super positive.
Good, interesting scripts are there....just too hard to believe that there are not many good stories that would interest him. I just feel that he should not allow his creator instincts to overwhelm everything else (this is also where some excesses could creep in). The creator sometimes is not satisfied with anything that he himself did not create, unless it is conclusively proven otherwise. Only way to conclusively prove and to satisfy a creator like KH is not by reciting a new story but by making the movie in a different language and proving it as a hit. I am thinking that was how he was convinced about UPO and now PN, after he was able to see the final output and convinced himself that he likes it.
He says a lot of things. He is clearly comfortable with the interviewer....Good one

Papanaasam - a lesson in good cinema.
I cant tell anything new that hasnt been said in reviews. I am not a fan of drama movies, and will never be. Once in a while there are some movies that proves me wrong. Papanasam is one such movie. Performance wise, there are no other actors in kollywood who could do the character justice like Kamalhaasan did. Unlike otheres I dont feel Gouthami is wrong cast in the movie. She is still an ace actress imo, and none of current leading female actresses matches her acting skills. Two other characters that impressed me was Kalabhavan Mani and Asha Sharath. Kalabhavan Mani, can pull of such vile roles with ease. Asha Sharath is convincing as well as IG as a mother.
Mighty impressed with M Ghibran once again, his BGM is superb. Songs were great too. But again I dont feel songs were needed. I am hoping for directors will change tamilcinema into non-song oriented movies in near future.
Big thanks for Jeethu Joseph for making such great movie. With gripping story, captivating screen play, right cast and right technicians this movie is one of the best movies in 2015.
Some valid points abt PN
