Most times i will stick to what is posted only. but there are times i want to talk other topics too. Behindwoods was started by a group of hardcore rajnifans. Among one is a person called Sundar, who was in touch with another HC rajni fan Nerd who was a member here. Then same Nerd confirmed he left BW. today some new set of ppl are running it but still there is a strong bias over rajini films and other films BO. And not only that, in this very forum, the discrepancies in behindwoods were being posted as long as 2005, since Chandramuki VV Sivaji Dasa enthiran etc. Countless no of times, kamalfans hae posted various ways of misreporting of BO numbers from behindwoods and Sify in this very forum. If you have followed all those thread, you wud have known about that.
So, only longtimers can identify what agenda each tamilcinema portal has! So, its not as u simply put that they reduce 50% of any KamalFilms' BO number but instead, they try to misreport in numerous ways. You can refer USV's last post for this. Its not like easy binary yes or no stuff which you are trying to portray.
Adding to that Kaushik another behindwoods reporter is from IT..he is my junior in the company I am working..he trained in mysore and worked for year or so in company..later by 2009 he joined behindwooods as news tracker,reporter..now he is into BO tracker as well..he is big Ajith fan..

Coming to sify sreedhar pillai tweeted positive today after july 3rd..he used to mention about collection reports for all the movies but so far nothing about Papanasam..
According to him Maari collected 6.75 C from 275 screens during 1st day which is highest for dhanush movie ..(approx)
Remember Maari released when papanasam and baahubali were going strong..
So adhuvae 6.75C collect pannum podhu, Papanasam solo release in 450 theaters without any competition would have collected atleast 9C during 1st day..2nd and 3rd day were strong bcoz of good reviews and WOM which can be seen clearly when trichy Cinemas tweeted there are more than 100+ cars in LA cinemas,Vijay cinemas ..also in Chennai heavy crowd/traffic in front of udhayam,vetri theaters..these were just examples..
So in 3 days Papanasam would have collected 30 C in TN alone..Within 1st week before baahubali release easily 50C in TN alone and 60C worldwide(ROI -3.5C,malaysia-2.5C,rest-4C)
So logically 100C is easy when the movie is running houseful even after 4 weeks..
And going by facts, TN alone 92 centers for 25th day! And even if it reduces to half for 5th week thats still a great feat! From 3rd week i guess everything shud be treated as bonus/profit only!

Feeling happy for Papanasams very good run after crossing 30 days. And Jilla's success in Telugu, more than a year after the origina was released, is a pleasant and unexpected surprise..though I did not like Jilla(but loved Kaththi and Thuppaki)

South Indian superstars always have an upper edge over Bollywood actors in South remakes!
Whenever a South Indian film starring versatile actors like Kamal Haasan, Rajnikanth, Mohanlal or Mahesh Babu is remade into Hindi with top notch Bollywood actors, it is frequently observed that the South Indian superstars have always stolen the action and have had an upper edge over their Bollywood counterparts.
Remember Vinod Khanna in DAYAVAN, remake of Kamal Haasan’s NAYAKAN; Anil Kapoor in EESHWAR, remake of Kamal Haasan’s SWATHI MUTHYAM, Arjun Kapoor in TEVAR, remake of Telugu film OKKADU, starring superstar Mahesh Babu etc. The recently released Ajay Devgn starrer DRISHYAM is also the best example.
DRISHYAM which is a remake of the South superstar Mohanlal’s Malayalam blockbuster by the same name, written and director, Jeethu Joseph. The same movie has also been remade into Tamil as PAPANASAM by Jeethu Joseph with Kamal Haasan in the lead role.
While both Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan have won the hearts of the cine buffs and critics alike by their mindboggling poignant performances alas Ajay Devgan fails to recapture the versatility of his South equivalents.
What is amazing is that these so-called Bollywood Superstar candidly acknowledge too that the South Stars are better than them.
In an interview Ajay frankly accepted, “Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan are fabulous actors and veterans. I'm not scared if people come and tell me that they're better actors because I know there are.”
However what is painful is that instead of learning from them Ajay Devgan has just discarded these veterans quoting, “I am not afraid of Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan because I have no fear from them. They are not my not my contemporaries and I'm not competing with them.”
Ajay Devgan makes this statement so effortlessly that as if Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan would have been his contemporaries and if he had to compete with them then he would have sharpened his skills and easily outscored the two legendary maestros with his histrionics!!!
One wonders why these Bollywood stars make such lame excuses if they do not have the ability to stand in front of such legends.

Interesting Notes :-
As I had mentioned earlier this is not an exhaustive list.
Continuous houseful shows – It means the movie shows have gone houseful in a row. Some movies which are super hit might run for 200 shows as continuous houseful and then register houseful shows intermittently while still doing well
On the number of days I have erred on the lower side and will provide the exact number of days later when I get my hands on my record sheet which unfortunately is back home.
Where I have mentioned 175 days in Madras, it does not mean that the movie did not run for 175 days in other cities in TN.
There are several other movies that have broken box office records but do not figure in this list becoz they did not make it to 175 days or I just missed them and will add to this list later
Upto the mid to late 80’s one of the most popular way to judge the star power of an actor was by the length of the queue for advance booking in Madras. When it came to advance booking there was and there is no other actor/ -star who can hold a candle to Thalaivar. Some of the queues for advance booking for Thalaivar’s movies like Sakalakalavallavan, Ek Duuje Ke Liye, Tik Tik Tik, Thoongathe Thambi Thoongathe, Raja Paarvai, Devar Magan (2nd week), Kuruthipunal were just astounding and cannot be matched by anyone
During MGR’s rule his cronies, even though they were also fans of Thalaivar, did not want anyone to break MGR’s record especially Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban’s record in Madras. Just to give you all some background on Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban –
Was the biggest box office record holder in Tamil films until Sivaji’s Tirisoolam
Ran for 25 weeks (regular shows) and 227 shows continuous houseful in Devi Paradise – Madras
For the advance booking during its release the queue started at Devi Paradise counter on the top floor (those days) and came winding down the ramp on to the car park, spilled on to Mount road and extended into neighbouring Shanthi theatre.
The movie was booked in advance for 28 days which was matched by Thalaivar’s Raja Paarvai (100th Movie)
Whenever a movie threatened Ulagam Sutrum Vaaliban’s record in Devi Paradise and failed the fans of MGR will celebrate by printing some notices or posters till Thalaviar’s Aboorva Sagodharagal broke that record by registering nearly 300 continuous houseful shows

How is Hindi Drishyam?
It seems that it has lot of negative reviews.
Hindi version is 2hrs 40min roughly. First half is compressed to a bit. Couple of important plot points (Swami visit mostly) is confined to the scene where Ajay is digging up the compost (in Papanasam/Malalayam Drishyam, KH/ML will rant with their spouse on their street smartness and their ode to farming.) The 4th fail comment is a recurring insult in this version, but the second is more or less retained from malayalam with an additional scene where Ajay goes to ATM machine to withdraw money (during interrogation.) Instead of August, the incident centers around Gandhi Jayanthi time (Oct 2-3) instead of August 2-3 like in other versions. Also, the slapping scenes are reduced here mostly and not as dramatic. Tabu is given a semi-mass introduction scene for her police role (she enters during lathi beating in cell 2 prisoners.) Overall, this version follows Malayalam version closely.
Ajay pretty much mimics Mohanlal's character (street smart and non-sympathetic in climax.) Shriya is miscast big time (nadippu suthamma varala). Only Tabu stands tall amongst the rest.
Some media reviews are good along with public opinion. Some among them say that bollywood must make more movies like this ..

wanted to watch this, as I did not get a chance to watch the Tamil version, but except Tabu, not much good reviews about the movie, Shreya is way too young to do a mummy role of teenage kids, besides I am not sure about her acting skills .. for some reason, Indian cinema show times have been considerably reduced in UK :( , Drishyam shows are very limited here ..

All other language remakes of Dhrishyam, Directors felt that reducing the duration of the movie will make the film racier and it will become better than original.
But Kamal suggested additional scenes are required, that too for 16 more minutes and asked . Also suggested that making it emotional will be better. Producers and director of Papanasam were afraid of increasing the duration. But Kamal was clear and confident about the changes in screenplay and outcome. And it worked very well.

That's the backbone of the movie. Audience should get a feel that the family should not be punished. Audience should be moved along with the family ...they should see every challenge put by police officers as the challenges put in front of them ... above all when the younger daughter says the truth andha ponnu mela kovam varama andha family mela paavam varanum ... adhu konjam miss aagirundhalum climax twist would have been cinematic !!!
Similarly police officer family emotions were also captured well. Idhula yedhu koranjirundhalum kastam.
Definitely Papanasam is a very good example for successful remake movie.

Director Nishikant Kamat’s Drishyam may have been slow out of the gate as it started its debut weekend last Friday, but it’s the finish that counts, and thanks to a stellar Sunday boosted by strong word of mouth, the film finished in style with a 300 million rupee (US$4.68 million) box office total.

When the film opened to just 60 million rupees ($936,000) on Friday (plus 20 million rupees in paid previews from Thursday) it appeared that the producers’ reported 650 million rupee ($10.1 million) investment in production and marketing of the film would go largely unrecouped. But excellent word of mouth propelled a 57 percent revenue jump on Saturday to 94 million rupees, and Sunday saw another 34 percent increase to 126 million. If it can hold up during the weekdays it now has a reasonable chance of reaching the magic 1 billion rupee ($15.7 million) domestic box office mark before the end of its run.
