Beautiful songs Usha ji and Querida! Amazed about Sollividu veLLi Nilave. He uses just guitar (I think anyone can play that chord, just the same chord throughout!) and flute in the background and composes a haunting song which immediately registers in our mind. Sensational! Violin comes occasionally only in the interludes. Very good example of a simplistic arrangement, but still no way inferior to any of his songs with grand orchestration.
Inspiring write-up V_S :D
People often talk about "mediocre" directors killing IR songs on screen.
Last night I watched agni natchathiram (first time) and FFed all songs (kind of knew the picturization from at least one time view on youtube).
Each of them is an all-time-fav IR song to me but picturization is intolerable, except may be rAjA-rAjathi rAjan intha rAja & oru poongAvanam which are ok given the time-of-release factor.
(BTW, the movie was a kuppai masAlA, wonder how it became a super hit )
Agree Picturisation of Raja Rajaathi was the good one amongst the rest, but 'Thoongatha vizhigal rendu' was not bad either, the worst of all is Ninukori varunum, an Insult the Name 'Raghuvaran it self' :x
Agreed, and guess who saved the Film ? Yes None other than Navarasa Nayagan Karthik:smokesmirk:
One of my all time favourite song:-

Mottu Vitta is another striking one from the same album which impresses instantly.

Today’s loop has been just two songs, both from the movie ‘Ennai Paar En Azhagai Paar’ (What an exhibitionist of a name for a movie! Did this even get released?)
The movie has 3 songs sung by the trio of B.S.Sasirekha, P.Susheela and S.P.Shailaja (rakshashi Jaanu was probably away on a vacation for which he had to compensate with 3 voices!). Two songs are top-notch jazzy erotica numbers: ‘Ammadiyo podhum podhum’ and ‘Thottup Paar Pattup Pondra Meni’ (perla ellam enna oru kilukiluppu!). While Ammadiyo has a enjoyable dizzy/drunk swing to it, Thottu paar is a totally whacky, I’m-the-hottest-dame-around competition song, structured very unconventionally with many interesting twists and turns.
Raja completely goes berserk in the instrumentation – crazy syncopations with trumpets/flutes/saxophone, awesomely peppy acoustic drums (boy! what a delight!), kickass guitars and bass and vocal harmonies.
Reminded me of an interview with one of the trumpet players who had played with RDB and IR for a long time, who in the interview, had explained the significance and intricacies of syncopation in IR’s work. These two songs stand testament to this.
Here’s the thiraipaadal link (only so-so quality; robs a lot from the listening. The one in the audio CD is far, far better)

Allaikal Ooivathillai - Puththam Puthu Kaalai - S. Janaki - 1981
Arfricavil Appu - Sinnanjiru Yaanai -Chorus, S. Janaki - 1986
Paa - Halke Se Bole - Chorus - 2009
... all songs are same, they only have a slight difference and when you hear them, they have their own idenity. :-o
Thanks app_eng :)
Going back to gold olden, terrific 90s. Nikkattuma Pogattuma. Not a rare song though! Thanks to the uploader, the quality is great! Real flute and violins. That bright flute staccato just before the pallavi, magical!. These nuances did not go away right from his first music days till today. Mano and Chitra sing with whole heart. Great folk tune, backed by those beautiful trademark bells, flute, violins with tabla giving the rhythm. How many different tabla rhythms we have heard so far. A very interesting orchestration in the interludes. Both the interludes has female chorus followed by flute, but observe the flute in the second interlude (followed by the chorus). Dancing flute! Great humming when charanam is underway gives the richness. These small small decorations makes this song very special.

Thank you Raj_musing :)
A couple of gems from the early 80s.
Thaamtha Theemtha from Pagalil Or Iravu sung by SJ. Unbelievable tune and effortless singing by SJ. http://www.thiraipaadal.com/album.ph...R00476&lang=en
Kaalangal Malai Kaalangal from Ithayathil Oru Idam sung by MV & SJ. http://www.thiraipaadal.com/album.ph...R00213&lang=en. Whenever I listen to this song I feel as if I'm in a dream. It's probably due to the mesmerizing guitar work throughout this song and the laidback singing of both MV & SJ. This is one another song in the transporter genre if I could borrow our app_engine's term.
Back to Ponnar Shankar now, can't get enough of this album.

While the serene Kai veenayai by Bombay Jayashree
Saamikku naan pooparikka, thaam tharikitathom by mano and chorus have been very popular when the movie released,
The ones that caught me by surprise are
Yenakku Ullathellam Swarnalatha 5:05 Not Available
Yennamo Solla Chorus, Mano, Swarnalatha 5:08 Not Available
I have no recollection of seeing these songs in the movie..
The first one is an almost MSV style song with melodious tune, effortless rendering by Swarnalatha - very breezy and the subdued mood is so well reflected by the orchestration and the singer's rendition.
The second song is the googly of the album - A flummoxing question of a song - which has so many of those "modulations ( diatonic and chromatic appingraangale ) that Raaja consciously attempts, plus the stop - gap - proceed kind of light rock instrumentation. The rock genre is accentuated by the way Mano hits the bass tone with a light echo..
All in all this song is a "20 mark" question from the composer in a board exam. I will have to say that the anwer is very complex one to write down.
Long after we are gone, there will be a generation of music listeners who would answer the questions in this song (hopefully).
What's a googly? :confused2:
Sounds like you're cricket-agnostic.
Please read this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googly
It is a delivery in cricket bowled by a leg spinner that spins the other way and fools the batsmen.
Jai,
I also have no recollection of 'Yenakku Ullathellam'. I have seen this movie and at that time I thought the songs weren't too good!!! Now I have to think differently. This Swarnalatha song is superb. As you say, a very MSVish melody. Maybe now having got used to his synth, I can enjoy the song more.

Listening to 'Gayam-2' again and I am convinced that this is the best Raja album in recent times. The recording is class, the synth inch perfect. 'andala lokam' and 'endhukamma prema prema' are all time great melodies. Love 'masakenuka' for its glorious interludes, the accordian / harmonica effect is superb. And 'rama rajyam'/'yeluthundru' are not something other composers can create only with a synth backing!! The icing on the cake is Raja's own rendition of 'kalagane'. An absolutely satisfying album. Wish his other albums have the same synth quality and recording quality. The major surprise for me has always been the variation in the recording quality of Raja albums!!!
kanya kumari.. SPB SJ and Raja. Rocks. sethtuen...... hahaha.

Suresh,
While you are enjoying raja's synth usages which according to me looks decent in Gayam-2
\\DIGRESSION1)May I request you to listen to a recent movie album - "URUMI" which is a periodic fantasy, probably in the lines of Ponnar Shankar, directed by Santhosh shivan. Now the songs are composed by Deepak Dev (who was an assistant to ARR and had worked with YSR,Vidyasagar etc). The movie and the songs are superhit and recently Maniratnam had a word of praise for the entire crew. Listen to the songs when you are free and draw your opinion...
2) Kindly listen to the musical super hit of 2010 for a movie "Anwar" which was composed by Gopi sundar, who is a big ARR follower. All the songs were sung by Shreya goshal and this album overtook "Kadha Thudarunnu" in popularity and collection. None of these songs will disappoint and listen when you get time...
//END DIGRESSION
As the film title suggests, the genre is obvious, tribal raja at his best.
Kandathai sollaathe Naan sonnathai sollaathe - Another tribal song with Raja's midas touch. Triple bango (??) when Janaki starts singing pallavi and charanams. Guitar chords during the first few lines of pallavi is just nostalgic. The male, female chorus is pulsating. While we are listening to the grand orchestration, that flute sneaks through our soul. It's amazing how this song got transformed to 'Unmela Oru Kannu' in Naan Mahan Alla.
Ponnaana Neram Raja - Please don't miss this one. Absolute cracker of a song and obviously my pick! Raja has gone crazy in preludes and interludes, watch the guitar chord progression in the prelude. Top class stuff! Not one second he allows us to breath in this song. But SJ does not gasp for breath, sings casually unlike today's singers where they sometime could not cope up with the tempo. Tremendous singing from the legend S Janaki. Most of all, it is not that Maestro has concentrated just on orchestration, hear the melody, that's where he stands tall. :notworthy: But this song does not fit into tribal category, seems to be fall in erotic mood, need to see how it's picturized.
Kandene Kandene - Prelude is just beautiful. Breezy SPS humming. I don't know how many times Raja would have used flute and violin in interludes, but as always it's different. When MV arrives after first charanam, we know what should happen and it happens. The tone of the song changes completely. Second interlude has some excellent violin counterpoints with guitar chords, just amazing! Just when you start realizing that another charanam is around the corner, Maestro finishes the song cleverly!

Thanks RM for the reco. Will definitely listen to those songs soon.
V_S, thanks a ton for re-discovering Kanni Theevu! (Columbus range’ku pointinga saar!). A wild blast of an opening any boring Monday could ask for!
Amazing instrumentation in all songs. Like App said once, one just has to utter the magic word ‘tribal’ to Raaja to bring out the wild beast in its deadliest form! (applicable even currently, as seen in Ambum kumbum). Janaki and Raaja seem to share some kind of extra-worldly bonding! Alas, I don’t have Raaga access now and Thiraipaadal has only 4 songs (the 1st one on your list is not to be seen here). But Ponnaana neram, whoa! My pick as well. The structuring, like you said, is done very interestingly; unexpected entry of melody while the instruments and other lines are progressing with such energy. The sangathis that come in the charanams are spell-binding!
Jaiganes, thanks for bringing up Vietnam Colony; nice writeup on Markazhi masam. While most of us thought this was the time (1994) when IR was least innovative, look at how many little wonder like these have slipped through silently. Couple of duets that I can think of in the same variety, from the same time period, are Oru Kootil (Kolangal) and Unna Nenachu Urugum (Raasayaa) (Thirapaadal credits this song to Preethi Uttamsingh and SPB; I think it’s Chitra and Mano actually)
Rajkumarc, lovely pick there in Thaamtha Theemtha (Pagalil Or Iravu). Such freshness, innocence and tenderness, despite the gymnastics in tune (and that darned chorus); this one’s a mesmerizing song.
Thanks KV. Sorry I confused everyone with Kandathai Sollaathe. Actually it starts with 'Ithu Oru Puthu Vitha' which is available both in raaga and thiraipaadal. Please listen.

Was adding this as a footnote to venki's review on 180 in song of the open road.
This song is from an obscure movie called "konji pesalam" - this is thippu special song. when I heard this song I proclaimed
here comes "thippu - a contender to MV's throne". because I had heard thippu croon to soft Harris jayaraj songs and some
energetic Vidhyasagar kuththu songs. here he owns a song that is right up there in malaysia annan's alley - semi classical with
some heavy singing in the higher and lower pitches, thippu pulls this song off well and Raaja had created some special sangadhis for him in
the higher octaves. the interludes are stand out - heavily context laden - a very nice song with poignant lyrics too..
I am stuck with this album...

on loop from morning..
Beautiful song Jai. Not given much thought about this album, but now listening, four beautiful songs. Tippu's briiliant show and we haven't known Tippu for this, and thanks to Raja for bringing the best out of him and to you for bringing this song up here.
BTW, nice to see Nayakan through your avatar
Jaiganes, an album with loopy credentials indeed :ty: for sharing!!
"Ithuvarai" is certainly a treat with Tippu, certainly the pick of the album.
the more and more I hear of Karthik, the more I am becoming a fan of his voice
especially nice to hear him in "Aathara Sruthi Illatha"
I expect no less from Unnikrishnan, he has such a charming voice, and the skill and training
very happy to say, quite taken with his "Siru Siru Siragugal"
Jaiganes,
my choice is - Unnai thedi thedi.. sadhana.
