Annamalai vs Padayappa.
Watched over the weekend. Annamalai on TV. And Padaiyappa on disc, as wife never finished watching it.
Theme the films share: fall of fortune, then the rise.
Themes they don't share:
Annamala - bromance, bovine love
Padaiyappa - sexism, and insecurity (always have 6-8 guys around you)
Music:
Annamalai - Okay, can't listen to most of the songs. Oru Pen Pura still nice. Never liked the Bond influenced theme.
Padaiyappa: Winner, always listenable. Moricone incfluenced theme that probably answers the question as to why many Rajini fans are also Eastwood fans. My nit-pick= no proper score for action scenes, unlike Muthu's full blast.
Direction:
Annamalai - Focused, probably the beginning of too many shots of hero walking craze.
Padaiyappa: Showy, camera zooming over the top, sideways, annoying as heck.
Comedy:
Annamalai: Snake scene still nice, "Kadavule kadavule" not funny anymore. As usual, pre-Vetri Nitchayam Rajini is hillarious.
Padaiyappa: Boring. Even Senthil not effective
Co-stars:
Annamalai - Very good, especially Radha Ravi
Padaiayppa: Ramya Krishnan still annoying as heck. The others so and so. Not enough NT/Rajini dynamics.
Dialogues:
Annamalai: Wonderful, especially the kanakku dialogues by Rajini.
Padaiyappa: as mentioned, pure sexism. En vazhi tani vazhi sound stupid. the nalla vazhthatha saritiriam illa is factually wrong. What if you turn it around?
Main character:
Annamalai: Lovable, you are with him when he falls and rises.
Padaiyappa: Sexist paranoid with ego as big as the very Himalaya the actor goes to.
Rajini's performance
Annamalai: One of the last great performances of his.
Padaiyappa: Lazy.
Annamalai >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Padaiyappa. Thanks god for Baba.
In padayappa, when lakshmi says "poi en marumagala kootittu vaa" and then rajni walks in to soundarya, the BGM was awesome. I think the same BGM repeated in some other scenes also. But in this scene, it was mindblowing.
Music is a great plus point in Padaiyappa, but sila edattula konjam muted-A irukkum. And lack of it during action scenes. In terms of ARR/RK collaboration Muthu trumps Padaiyappa just on the background score alone.
Annamalaiya Padaiyappavannu ketta of course most of us will say Annamalai without any hesitation... But never knew why, my wife likes Padaiyappa very much.. She is not a Rajini fan though.
ramya kissnan character remba pudichirukkum... edhukkum konjam jaakradhayaa irunga..
Grouch  though I don't hate Padaiyappaa as much as you do. 2nd half (save for what-a-man) is sort of better than the 1st half. But no comparison to Annamalai. Rajini's best masala in the last 20 years. Vetri nichayam is a particular favorite of mine. Devaji in supreme form. And well shot too. Padaiyappaa (the scene Ramkumar quoted, oonjal scene etc.), Batsha (ulle po, medical college) both had quite a few good scenes but not as consistently good as Annamalai.

Actual fight should be Annamalai vs Baatsha. I guess most of us will settle for Annamalai.
HR, point-u.
Nerd, I warned my wife about that unintentionally hillarious "what a man" scene, that I might laugh and don't get offended. Ennakku munnAdi sirichitA...
SS, some videos not working.
I prefer annamalai over baasha...But the younger crowd likes more baasha and padayappa.....
Annamalai - more Style with subtance
Baasha - style with less substance
Padayappa - verum sathamthann....
FDFS - Annamalai - How many of you shouted "Kushboo" in the breif pause during the song Kondaiyil Thazham poo song ?
Me - yes

Lyrics: Kannadasan
PLOT:
Aiyampettai Arivudainambi Kaliyaperumal Chandran (for short, A.A.K. Chandran) (Rajinikanth) is a playful young man. Upon completion of his degree, his uncle (Poornam Viswanathan) advises him to attend an interview for a job at his friend Sri Ramachandramurthy's (Thengai Srinivasan) company. The doctor advises Chandran to act in a manner most appreciated by Sri Ramachandramurthy namely wearing a Nehru kurta, telling his full name always, giving importance to his moustache, showing a lack of interest in sports and drama, giving respect to his father's words (i.e., by repeating the phrase "My Father always told me" often) and detesting the concept of recommendations.
During the job interview, Chandran followed his uncle's advice perfectly and gets the job along with a beaming smile from his boss. However, Chandran eventually gets caught when Sri Ramachandramurthy watches him at a football match, which he attends with his friends. He took leave on that day by telling his boss that his mother (who died many years ago) was in a serious medical condition. To escape from the ire of his boss and being fired, he makes his boss believe that it was his (fake) twin brother Indran (without a moustache) who was at the match and not himself. This idea was inspired by a dual-role played by his actor friend Nagesh in a fictional film where he is in two roles: one with a moustache and one without.
Sri Ramachandramurthy (although not convinced but feeling guilty due to suspecting his top employee) wants to see Chandran's brother Indran as well as his mother and wants Indran to teach music to his daughter Sarojini (Madhavi).
Chandran was startled at the request but agreed to it. He seeks his friend Nagesh for help. Nagesh advises Chandran to remove his moustache and go ahead acting as Indran. Chandran was reluctant to remove his moustache but goes ahead with it as there is no other way to continue the drama. The now moustache-less Indran was the anti-thesis of the Chandran as seen by Sri Ramachandramurthy. Indran takes music classes for Sri Ramachandramurthy's daughter Sarojini and the two fall in love.
For most of the rest of the film Chandran was leading a dual life: a sincere hardworking employee to his boss and a typical cool young guy (Indran) while teaching music to his boss' daughter.
How Come Indiran manages to save his job & love form the rest of the story

TRIVA:
AVM initially decided to produce a remake film Bhai Bhai with Rajini & Kamal combo . Kamal & Rajini decided not to work together and Kamal suggested to go ahead with Rajini and hence Murattu Kaalai happened But unfortunate Demise of Meiyappa Chettair during the project left Rajini unhappy as it was he who insisted to do a movie with Rajini after watching Mullum Mallarum .
All the songs were hit , particularly poduvaga En Manasu Thangam was a rage those days
Initally Rajini was aginst that song as he found it self glorification but Panchu sir & SPM convinced him
Many actors were offered Villan role but SPM requested Jai sir who readily agreed . Jai acted as a villan for first time in other’s hero movie
Rajini sir was happy that he asked to develop great scope for Jai & requested producers and director to give him equal amount of importance in publicity
It was a comeback movie for AVM which had stopped productions in 1970
The train fight was superbly choreographed and was finished in 3 days before allotted period of 5 days
The rekla fight was helped by Pollachi Vanavaraiyar
The bull fight was shot in all places where such bull fight was held and the crew chipped in and edited it cohesively .
Rajini wore a wig, it was not a haircut as said by others
Rajini appeared without a moustache in climax
A getup of Rajini in form of Krishna was also taken but not used
The train fight was performed by Rajini without a dupe.
FINAL VERDICT:

IIRC , this the "Only" movie in which Muthuraman plays a villain?? Such a versatile actor, but for some reason, -tive roles don't suit him!
I love one song by SPB in this film, called "Kadavul padaithaan" really hilarious!
