Second half is Ok..Screen play is not at all convincing with songs too dragging in 2nd half..
May be liked by kids & family but that too 50:50 chance..Let us wait & see..
As I have told already... the movie's success is depend on the screenplay.
I think thats where we lacked.
Arul.. whether its action, thriller, horror, fantasy or romance... Screenplay is important, even than the Story.
Now I am going to watch with pretty low expectation.
Puli, the highly anticipated fantasy adventure flick, starring Vijay, Hansika Motwani, Shruti Haasan and Sri Devi is directed by Chimbu Devan. Rockstar DSP has composed the virally trending songs of the film, which has its Cinematography handled by Natarajan Subramaniam. Produced by P. T. Selvakumar and Shibu Thameens, the movie is made on a huge budget which is said to be the costliest movie in Vijay's career. Positive review in most of the sites. Did we expect too much from Chimbu?
Vijay's Puli has been released across the world today after a last minute hiccup. Shrouded by hype and madness, Puli was one of the most anticipated films. Has it lived up to its expectations? Continue reading our movie review to know what exactly this fantasy flick has to offer. Puli (U): Book Your Tickets Right Away! Puli Plot: Puli is set against the backdrop of a fantasy kingdom named 'Vedhala Kotai' which is ruled by its queen, played by Sridevi, and commandeered by Sudeep. Sudeep leads a mysterious team of warriors known as 'Vedhalangal' and they posses certain super human abilities. Putting their super powers to good use, Sudeep and his gang impose many unreasonable taxes on the citizens who reside in the surrounding villages. They also treat them as slaves and take complete control over them. Unable to free themselves from the evil clutches of 'Vedhalangal', the villagers finally turn towards Vijay after certain turn of events. How Vijay takes on the evil gang of 'Vedhalangal' despite their super power abilities forms the crux of the story. Click Here to Check Out Fans Celebrating The Movie Performances: Vijay has delivered the goods, especially in stunt and song sequences. While Shruti Haasan impresses with her alluring looks and has really excelled in a couple of scenes. But, extraordinary performances comes from actors like Sudeep and Sridevi. While Sudeep looks more than convincing as a evil commander, Sridevi plays her part perfectly well. Supporting actors like Prabhu and Thambi Ramaiah have come up with decent performances. Surprisingly, comical sequences works only in parts and can be considered as one of the negatives of Puli. Technicalities: The much talked about VFX and CG shots stand out in the entire film as such high quality visual effects is something new to Tamil audience and hopefully, it is here to stay. Cinematographer Natty is the biggest strength of Puli. The way he has captured the entire movie has not only enhanced the visual quality but also elevates the overall feel of the film. Art Director Muthuraj has done his best in putting together the fantasy world. Perhaps, more investment from the producers might've taken the art department of Puli to a whole new level. While the screenplay in the first half is on the slower side, the movie picks up pace in the latter half. But undeniably, Chimbu Deven should've come up with a better screenplay for a movie like Puli. Another let down is Devi Sri Prasad's background score as his music fails to enhance the overall intensity which would've otherwise helped the movie's lacklustre screenplay. Overall View: Kudos to director Chimbu Deven for bringing back the fantasy genre to Tamil cinema. However, his average screenplay and other technical faults makes Puli just a one time watch.

VFX was superb. Something great first time for Indian cinema. I felt VFX was better than Bahubali
Puli Movie Review - An enjoyable fantasy ride
IndiaGlitz [Thursday, October 01, 2015]
Fantasy and multi-starrers are relatively new concepts for Tamil cinema. Vijay, the leading star among the current lot of actors has acted in a film that has these two concepts and that film is 'Puli'. Read on to know how the film has worked out.
'Puli' is the story of how Marudheeran (Vijay) saves innocent people from the clutches of a demoniac kingdom ruled by Yavan Rani (Sridevi) and controlled by her Thalapthy Jalthrangan (Sudheep).
The film starts with usual elements like romance, comedy etc to cater to the commercial movie buffs and they offer nothing new except that the film is set in a different place and charcters wear different costumes. But there are interesting moments here and there thanks to the presence of Vijay and fantasy based ideas that will be a surprise to everyone.
Towards the interval the film picks up momentum and the second half is filled with fantasy elements, visual grandeur, comedy, romance and retains plenty of moments to make Vijay fans go frenzy. But the second half is a bit lengthy .
Overall 'Puli' is a fantasy film that can be enjoyed by family audience especially Children and it's a Vijay who retains his form and charm as always lives up to his mass appeal
#Ilayathalapathy #Vijay's #Puli : Adventure fantasy drama. Viijay's dance from opening song to Yeandi Yeandi, till the end is energetic. One of the best made technical film down south let it be cinematography - Sound design or anything.Grandeur visuals & top notch CG work by VFX team under a limited budged. Average first half, second half builds up well with a strong flashback & Sridevi's performance.
Huge star cast with a very limited screen presence shared by all, a good fantasy story line let down by weak execution, a crispy screenplay & sharp dialogues were missing. Vijay's Puli a neat family entertainer, good watch for children's and not for the 'MASSES', but a new genre experience.
P.S : Watch it in 'Dolby Atmos' feature if possible, great sound design.

Marketed and branded as a grand fantasy ride, the Chimbu Deven directed Puli hits the screens today after facing a few minor release hiccups over the past day or so. Despite having a huge star like Vijay on board, Chimbu plays to his strengths in Puli and we have many of the director's trademark touches and quirks. With practical restrictions, he also has pulled off a project of such a scale quite effectively.
The story is pretty simple with Vijay playing Marudheeran, a young man who takes up a mission, against the rulers of the land, to get back his lady love. This journey is packed with enjoyable adventure, fantasy and fun elements, and Vijay safely navigates his way with his sidekicks for company. Even animals and birds have a sizable part to play, and there is also a neat twist thrown into the mix towards the end.
We get to see Vijay as youthful and well-groomed as ever and thanks to his fit and agile frame, he doesn't look odd in his regal costumes. The naughty, cheeky, flirty side of Vijay is also on view here, and Puli is an easy outing for this experienced star. His fast dance moves in the opening 'Puli Puli' song are jaw-dropping indeed. He is 41, can you believe it? Though the film is quintessentially Chimbu Deven in the way it plays out, there are sharp punch dialogues, action scenes and mass moments dedicated to Vijay's fans, which they ought to lap up big time. Whenever he looks at the screen and interacts with his audience, they go wild in delight.
The splendid production design by Muthuraj for all the interiors, the strong VFX work by Kamalakannan and team, the intricate work done on the extravagant costumes, robes and other royal accessories, the numerous sword fight sequences, the lush outdoor locations and the overall grandeur in DoP Natty's visuals count among Puli's numerous plus points.
Devi Sri Prasad's work on the RR serves the purpose and his orchestration is heavy and dramatic, befitting the film's genre. Among the song visuals, the celebratory 'Jingiliya' has its unique standout factor while the visually rich 'Yendi Yendi' oozes fine romantic chemistry between Vijay and Shruti Haasan.
The one-dimensional brooding nature of the lead villain is a downer in Puli, along with the melodramatic flashback segment and some of the song placements.
Shruti Haasan is undeniably glamorous and generously flaunts her lithe frame, while 'princess' Hansika shines in the dance sequences. Nandita's is a 'blink you miss' type of role while veteran superstar Sridevi, as the magically gifted queen, commands good screen space.
This is another productive outing for the supremely consistent Thambi Ramaiah, who sports twin mustaches much to our amusement. And Robo Shankar, Vidyu Raman, Imman Annachi can't play such roles again.
The film moves along at a pretty leisurely pace, and one can't go in expecting a racy ride from start to finish. The ending could have been better, as it is too frenetic. Weighing all the positives and negatives, Puli is ultimately an effort which needs to be positively considered. It isn't everyday that a lavish film such as this is made. Despite its screenplay issues, Puli deserves to be seen for all that has gone into its making.
When Superstars pick such new scripts, there are lots of good things that can happen to cinema. Applause to Vijay for that.
Verdict: Looking beyond few issues, Puli is a lavishly made mainstream fantasy entertainer with good visual effects which should be encouraged

I am happy to see Vijay in these type of movies rather than old wine commercial movies. This will surely take Tamil movies to next level :)
THis movie would have been wow wow with likes of shankar. CD still needs some experience. But he has given his best
Vinod,
Looks like u r disappointed. I checked with my neighbour who just came back after watching with his family. He said it's a decent attempt but with wrong placement of songs. Anyways, we need to wait till the dust settles down and we get a clear picture.
I am watching it tonight BTW.. [emoji4]
We can hope Families and Kids make the movie Super Hit
Where u r planning to watch
Blogger Jackie sekar has written a decent review!
Hindustan times has given a worst review!
It seems fans are more disappointed than general audience! :(
General Audience will like the movie
Jokes Apart- The attempt to make a fantasy genre should be applauded - He chose the wrong Stewart to lead. CD has been in a losing streak someone like Shankar or Murugadoss would have made this better (It is difficult to come up with the 3rd name for this movie Genre)
Behindwoods 2.75/5. Everything positive about the movie but the only critical part of the review is

Yes. Reviews in twitter/fb of neutral audience are all in praise and positive. Vijay fans were expecting lot of mass scenes i guess
Negative WOM and reviews wont help at all... :(
Already mostly on the negative side...
Mostly AVG or less than that...
Quoting Muthalvan... "Atleast, We Tried... "
I was much confident on this project rather than atlee's...
But I m sure and confident that THALABATHY wont let us down for long...
I don't know. If people can enjoy a movie like Baahubali with poor story and logic, I don't see why this can't do well. Still yet to see it myself.
I know you did not like Baahubali but the wom was too good for that movie. I have never seen anything like that in the recent times. Despite the fact that it was a telugu movie, tamil audience praised a lot. Trust me I have not seen the movie , Baahubali, yet! :)
Came in here expecting good reviews but most are talking about it as it is average. Will only see it saturday but happy to see vijay do different genre.
So far the general reviews are better than Vijay fans. The latter are more disappointed than the general audience and professional reviewers. We need to wait and see how it goes with family audience and children. Apparently Vijay and Chimbu targeted them. Keep yor fingers crossed. :)
Sridhar pillai does not open his mouth in twitter but sify review is not good at all.
