Morning drive heard song "Kaasu kaiyil illaatta" from maayakkkannaadi.
feather light song - but holds a greater star like gravity when heard properly.
Meesikkally:
Two set of rhythm patterns running together - arranged so that the second one's ebb synchronized with the first one's pause - effect - terrific - both rhythm patterns heard separately are as simple as a full toss from sachin tendulkar - but when combined - it is a anil kumble googly.
backing instruments - doesnt get much simpler than this from maestro - usually - flute - one synth key doing a punctuation whenever flute begins or ends - this combination creates a new sound - nothing geeky about it - but gives a soft down to earth feel to the interludes.
Guitar or some kind of plucking string instrument - comes in a staccato pattern - that the IR fans hated so much in the mid 2000s. Yet comes across nicely here.
And then maestro singing in his casual low sthaayi - not much of vocal gimmickery .
Lyrically - nothing earth shattering -just simple pithy truths about limitless desire not backed up by preparation - but when it comes from maestro
a line like "Thiramai indriye kanavu kaanbavan - kaanal neerile meenukkalaibavan" (one who dreams without talents is the one who fishes in a mirage)
the lines acquire a confuscian clarity. One also remembers how raaja himself came to madras with only dream but acquired those talents that make him
a maestro today.
This is overall a high repeat value song for me - the synth haters and maestro voice haters might find this song jaded- "not upto the quality" etc etc, but I find this song to be an everlasting GEM.

I had totally, totally ignored 'Mayakkannadi' songs. I heard one recently 'konjam konjam' and was impressed. Now after your writing I want to go and listen to this album. Infact so many album copies were available in the stores but unfortunately did not buy the CD. Now to go and check if it is still available !!!

Thanks Jai for posting about Kaasu Kayil from Mayakannadi. I haven't paid much attention to that particular number, your post make me revisit. BTW, would love someone to write in detail about Ulagile Azhagi Neethaan and Konjam Konjam from the same movie. I felt the orchestration was outstanding in both of those numbers, especially Ulagile Azhagi. Another similar number is Andha Naal Nyabagam from Adhu oru Kanakaalam. I liked VijayYesudoss's voice and the songs he sang for IR are really good.
App - Yaarum Thodatha from Ajantha is a lovely number and I love the way IR & ShreyaG have rendered the song. It usually goes on multiple repeats for me.

I remember reading about IR working as guitarist with him...and once speculated in a thread whether he played guitar for this song, one of my fav those days (He definitely was not the composer).
Also, I think Govardhanam is the brother of Sudharsanam, who is dad of IR's guitarist Sadhanandan.

Goverdhanam and Raja were supposed to work as a composer duo and all things were in place. Panju Arunachalam wanted only Raja to be the composer of Annakkili, saying that he didn't want a duo. So Raja started composing solo and Goverdhanam master worked as the conductor for Raja in his initial days. (The job that Puru does nowadays.) Raja tells about this in his biography.
Govardhanam was with his brother Sudarsanam (father of Sada, the guitarist with Raja) and they had composed as a duo. For a long time Sudarsanam was the company music director for AVM. Sudarshanam has given some amazing music, especially for mythologies, in Telugu. His songs for 'Bhookailas' are enduring and will be around for a very long time. It is a pity that a music director like him is forgotten today.
Listening to the bass lines flowing in background, that too in such a song, superb! Even if Raja hasn't composed for this, i guess this kind of usage may be something Raja wud have looked upon and wished to do so, which he did and does amazingly!

Yesterday was out and wanted to buy a CD but since they didn’t have my preference, I purchased another CD since I didn’t want to waste my journey... “Love King Illaiyaraaja Chapter 1 MP3 CD”
I took time out today to hear it and as I had my playlist on shuffle, the first track to play was number 9. Engiruntho. Done my research and found out this track is from film En Jeevan Paduthu (1988 – The year I was born). What I found funny was this track was inserted in the CD 5 times and that to under different names lol must’ve been a dodgy mp3 or maybe it was written for me to be encapsulated by this gem. At first I thought is my playlist playing up but I was wrong.

The album has two versions, one by Raaja Saab himself (this is the version that features on the CD I brought) and the other one being by Lata Mangeshkar :surprised: Nice to hear in Thamizh.
Raaja Saab’s version is much more haunting.

I am in the later 90s phase now and I am liking the songs, especially the 'light folk' as you say, that he did then. A lot of lovely songs I missed are in a loop nowadays. So, yes NEVP can take its time. No issues :D (Ofcourse others will kill us is a different thing.)

Yes, 'pandi naatu thangam' is very addictive. It took me a long time to come out of 'siru kootile'. Ofcourse, 'mayilAdum pArayila' is para adi. Super.
I compare ARR's entry into film music with Rajiv Gandhi's entry into politics - opening up of the economy (music direction field) and infusion of new technology/management practices (music technology and production practices). To some extent, ARR reintroduced some older practices. It was only IR who had a unique way of running the show. Different personality totally.

A very very different perspective. You seems to have separated out the channels and enhanced some of them. Initially for a minute I heard mostly the beat. Later the bass guitar is superb. This also shows the depth of Raja's music. So many instruments playing and we end up hearing only a few of them explicitly. Lovely work.
Suresh, you said it right.. "explicitly" - I think all the instruments matter. It subconsciously adds a rhythmic or melodic accent. One of the reasons I think the song stays with you longer. I think IR himself said something like .."there are no unnecessary notes" or something to that effect. People like Deva when imitating IR will leave out these things and this is how I spot him.Quote:

When I heard you're clip (and not having recalled the original yet), the kanda nadai (tha-ka-tha-ki-ta) got me curious. This is another facet of IR which makes him musically more interesting to me, that he's ever willing to try different thaalams and nadai. The kanda nadai with WCM style makes a very interesting combo. Later, when I heard the original and the 'sri rama rama' chorus in it, I could kinda see the choice for the nadai, for it seemed to fit very nicely with the chorus.

Yes.. I extracted the whole audio into separate channels and then I enhanced them. Its over 3 hours worth of music/dialogue with the dvd quality. What annoyed me is that there is constant light wind noise and birds chirping in the whole movie(mostly). That is part of all 5.1 channels. I wish they did 7.1 and did recorded the BGM separately. However, ignoring the distractions.. I had to enhance the bgm sections to match the rest of the bgm when the dialogue is being rendered. The other thing which got lost in this bgm score is that emphasis of Oboe and Clarinet at the very end...It got drowned by Chorus and some sort of synth violins..Quote:
