Shankar's heroes are of two types:Star Heroes (Rajni, Kamal) and Dependable heroes(Vikram,Arjun,Prasanth,Prabhudeva,Vikram(of now)). Superstar and Ulaganayagan when they joined hands with Shankar, the result was almost unheard of in Tamil Cinema. When I watched Rajni in Baba d Chandramukhi, i thought i was seeing the last of him. Nobody can deny what Sivaji and Endhiran did to him and now it stands 1 and 2 in all-time lists.
The others in the Dependable ones are those who give an impression that they are perennially busy without setting the box office on fire. They are the ones who can afford the dates that a Shankar movie demands and they have everything to gain for. Arjun, Prasanth and Vikram of now are those heroes who were always busy and yet were more than happy to work with him.
As you rightly say, Vikram (during Anniyan) was probably caught in between. He was neither a superstar nor the second one. He was going through a purple patch and probably thought a Shankar movie was the pinnacle. Pinnacle it was for Vikram, as he lost precious years which allowed Surya to leapfrog Vikram. Vikram is still struggling to capture lost ground and hope ‘I’ lifts him up. You are absolutely right on this.
Vijay though I think is in a better position to take a chance. The period between ATM and Sura is almost barren and despite this poor form, neither his fan nor his own confidence deserted him. Now that he has had some significant successes, a good Shankar movie would be all that we can ask far. I really hope, Shankar weaves his magic and Vijay relishes his second opportunity.
