Very logical question indeed. Provided the cost of the movie and selling price of the movie are the same. Is that the case here?
Even at less than one crore collection pisasu can be hit.

I dont know lingaa budget. Would it be 90 crores? It is certainly not as big as enthiran. Nobody wanted to spend money for enthiran budget as it was BIG and one needs to wait for two years for the movie to hit silver screen.
Why would any distributor pay more than how much they paid for enthiran?

Kollywood created a new record by releasing as many as 212 films in the year which draws to a close tomorrow. Even last Friday, we had four films including Arya-Hansika’sMeaghamann hitting the screens. Except for Kamal Haasan, Simbu and Vikram, all major actors had at least one of their films releasing this year. Let’s now have a look at the top five heroes of 2014.
Rajinikanth: As always, superstar Rajinikanth emerges on top. Rajini had two releases this year: one was Kochadaiiyaan, the country’s first-ever 3-D animation film made at Rs.125 crore. It did very well in Tamil but not so well in other languages. Lingaa, which was Rajini’s second release, got mixed reviews but has been going great guns in theatres. It collected Rs.140 crores in its first three days and despite the films which released around Christmas, Lingaa is motoring ahead.
Ajith: Thala Ajith had his Veeram releasing on Pongal in January and was pleasing to watch for his fans as well as movie-goers. It had a typically grand opening one has come to watch in Ajith’s films. Though it wasn’t a super-duper hit, it can be termed as a ‘hit’.
Vijay: Ilayathalapathy Vijay had a mixed bag this year as he had two releases: Jilla and Kaththi. Jilla released with Ajith’s Veeram during Pongal but ran for 100 days only in Baby Albert in Chennai that too only for the matinee show. The producer has acknowledged that the returns were not what he had anticipated. Kaththi, Vijay’s second film of the year directed by A.R. Murugadoss, was dogged by controversies but the makers again claimed that the film had collected more than Rs.100 crore, a claim not agreed to by many trade pundits.
Dhanush starred in one of the biggest hits of the year in the form of Velai Iilla Pattathari(VIP), which was also the debut film as director for famed cinematographer Velraj. The film, which had catchy tunes by Anirudh, catapulted Dhanush once again into the top bracket after his string of failures in Tamil in the past few years.
Sivakarthikeyan may not have been able to repeat his super-success of last year’sVaruthapadatha Valibar Sangam when his Maan Karate released early this year. Yet, it was neither a super-hit nor a failure either. It also steadied Sivakarthikeyan’s career graph, making him one of the five successful heroes of the year.

BO OFFICE REPORTS - YENNAI ARINDHAAL 1ST DAY WORLD BOX OFFICE COLLECTION
Ajith Kumar’s Yennai Arindhaal opened up grander than the reported screens. Initially, it was mentioned that it will have a TN release in just 500 screens, but gradually struck the 582 mark on the spur of moment. This is an authentic report from one of the leading film traders of the globe and the first day collection of this film is as follows.
TN - 12.80 CRORES – 582 SCREENS
KERALA – 3.75CRS 110 SCREENS
KARNATAKA – 2.54 CR 80SCREENS
REST OF INDIA – 1.36CRORES 50 SCREENS
OVERSEAS - 9.75CRORES 450 SCREENS
TOTAL – 30.20 CRORES APPROXIMATELY
It is worth mentioning that Ajith Kumar films usually are bound to action and violence that many female audiences wouldn’t prefer to watch. But with Gautham Vasudev Menon adding more romance, emotions and family elements to this film, it has drawn family audiences into the theatres. With the shows house packed for the entire weekend, we can expect Yennai Arindhaal to scale the great heights in box office. For now, it becomes the second biggest opener in the recent times with Lingaa collecting 37Crores and Vikram’s I with 27Crores and Kaththi – 23 Crores approximately on the first day worldwide.
Is 'Yennai Arindhaal' a profitable venture?
Thala Ajith's Gautham Vasudev Menon directed Yennai Arindhaal took a decent opening worldwide. It has grossed nearly Rs 50 crores world wide in its first four days opening weekend - Feb 5 to 8.
In Tamil Nadu alone the film has grossed approximately Rs 32 Cr with a net (after tax) of Rs 24.5 Cr. Considering the non-holiday release schedule, it is decent and showed Ajith's opening power. In other territories like Kerala and Karnataka, the film is doing average business.
In Kerala, Yennai Arindhaal managed to gross Rs 2.8 crores and in Karnataka, the film has grossed 3.7 crs (approx).Though, the film did rocking business in USA by collecting 400k$, the opening in UK and Australia is not up to the level of other biggies like Kaththi and I.
Overall, the opening weekend gross of the film is nearly 50 crores, with a net box office around Rs 35 Cr worldwide, which is good. The film carries mixed reports and at the end, may emerge as just an average grosser.

Ajay @uktamilbo
Top 7 actors in the UK based on average gross per movie are
1. Rajinikanth
2. Kamal
3. Vijay
4. Suriya
5. Ajith
6. Vikram
7. Dhanush
Since 2007, almost £8M in collections have come from Tamil movies in UK- with considerable earnings coming from Vijay and Rajinikanth.
How generous to mention a $480K+ collected movie (in 5 days weekend) as $400K and compare it to a 6 days weekend movie.
-deleted with warning-
This is what US distributor says about the hurdles this movie faced in US and still made money for them.
With all this negative factors Yennai Arindhaal 5 days weekend collection including premier shows = $480432Quote:
ATMUS Entertainment @ATMUSent
This is winter release, non festival release and beat prev thala best by a mile.
Per day collection = $96086
The movie which he compares,
kathi 6 days weekend collection including premier shows = $570207
Per day collection = $95034
This is for US.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now for AUS,
Yennai Arindhaal's 4 days weekend collection = $153,680
Per day collection = $38,420
Kathi 5 days weekend collection = $160,979
Per day collection = $32,196
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Tamil Nadu,
Yennai Arindhaal's 4 days weekend gross = 32C
Per day gross = 8C
Kathi 5 days weekend gross = 36c
Per day gross = 7.2C
Now, deducting 1st days collection of both the films to know how well the respective movies held at box office from day 2,
Yennai arindhaal's 1st day (Thurs) TN gross = 11C.
So the remaining 3 days TN weekend gross = 32C - 11C = 21C
Per day gross from Fri, Sat and Sun = 7C (mixed word of mouth.. average grosser.. seriously.. you arsehole..)
Kathi's 1st day (Wed) TN gross = 12.5C.
So the remaining 4 days TN weekend gross = 36C - 12.5C = 23.5C
Per day gross from Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun = 5.8C
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now Chennai,
Yennai Arindhaal's 4 day collection = Rs 2,92,55,762
Per day collection = Rs 73,13,941
Kathi 5 days collection = Rs 3,01,09,817
Per day collection = Rs 60,21,963
Now further shrinking the comparison by comparing only the weekend Chennai Box Office collection from Fri-Sun,
Yennai Arindhaal Fri,Sat,Sun had 486 shows and collected = Rs 2,17,95,337
Per show collection = Rs 44,846
Kathi Fri,Sat,Sun had 411 shows and collected = Rs 1,74,79,424
Per show collection = Rs 42,529
Still i did not bring the factors like Deepavali holidays, ARM or Worst possible weekday release while students and families are in exam preparation mode, out of form GVM whose genuine blockbuster was a decade back in the form of VV.
People can still say UK da. Kadaisi varai verum tiffin mattum than da ect.
Yennai Arindhaal won hands down especially in TN and CBO.

$55K from 56 screens and jumped to $92K from just 9 screens. I know this is US report. Just bringing this to say how it is unpredictable if we dont get full or atleast major screens collection.Quote:

Usually when a movie opens with bad WOM, websites will say it has opened grandly though it carries mixed reports, It'll take at least two weeks for them to declare it as an average grosser..so for sify to say it might end as an "average grosser" on the 5th day, YA's collection should have dropped drastically from Friday, which is not the case..
Tamil Cinema @BoAnalyst
No Decrease In #YennaiArindhaal Tickets Price At Most Places. With 70-80% Occupancy On An Average All Set For A Massive Box Office In TN.
Yennai Arindhaal Monday business
After a decent weekend Yennai Arindhaal started dropping from yesterday . The usual drop from sun to Monday is to be a 50% but YA faces a 60-65% drop overall and with mass centres dropping even more. To compare with Sunday the plex dominated Chennai,Chengalpet territories and A centres like Coimbatore,Salem and Trichy holder well with a rough 55% drop from Sunday but that isnt a satisying business for the prices it has sold here . TN business is in between 2-2.5cr gross yesterday with Nett being in range of 1.5-1.9Cr . This is a below par business for the huge prices it has been sold and with Anegan coming in next week might affect and the Distributors/Exhibitors are worried now. http://www.tamilboxoffice1.com/2015/...-business.html
Two things to be noted here
1. Feb is a horrible month to release a biggie. Big drop is inevitable. One should never compare a Feb release to a Deepavali / Pongal release. Especially a Deepavali release. Pongal release time-la families start putting pressure on children to study.
2. GVM has a decent silent base among B centre women audience too. So never under estimate based on WOM.
TamilBoxOffice1.com @TamilBoxOffice1 :

check any multiplex or any many screens in Chennai. . It's been mostly booked, except may be in UK :lol2: Ayngaran sombus can update only that area.. check twitter Yennaiarindhaal search feed you will get many screen shots of booking status, not interested to post all those here, not necessary too.
