Preserve the Historic Temple "Panchavan Mathevi Iswaram" built by Rajendra Chola - 1

Preserve the Historic Temple "Panchavan Mathevi (Madevi) Iswaram" built by Rajendra Chola - 1 (A.D.1012-1044)

The Tamil Emperor Rajendra Chola's mother was Vaanavan Madeviyaar. She was the second Queen of Rajaraja Chola - 1 father of Rajendra Chola - 1. Rajaraja Chola - 1's first Queen and Pattamahishi was Panchavan Mathevi. She has been a Dance Performing Artist (Nakkan) with the original name as Nakkan 'Thillaiyalagiyaar' and was the daughter of Avanikandarppapurattu Paluvettaraiyar - Chieftain of Paluvur, of Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. Rajaraja Chola - 1 (Arumolivarman) married her when he was only a heir to the Chola throne, and after Rajaraja ascended the Chola throne she was given the name as 'Panchavan Mathevi' and a special name as 'Chola Matheviyar'. On sequencing all Inscriptions of Rajaraja Chola - 1 in order of his regnal years it is very clear that the 'Queen Chola Matheviyar alias Panchavan Mathevi' has been his first Queen since he ascended the Chola throne in A.D.985 and undoubtedly has been the "Patta Mahishi" of Rajaraja Chola - 1. She was provided with two Servents Guild(Velam) known as Kothandarama Velam and Saththurubayangara-terinda Velam to be at her immediate services.

Panchavan Mathevi didnot have any off-spring by Rajaraja Chola - 1. Hence she adored very much the Rajendra Chola - 1 son of Vaanavan Mathevi the second Queen of Rajaraja Chola - 1 as determined on sequencing all his Inscriptions in order of regnal years. Like wise Rajendra Chola - 1 too had very much respect to his step-mother (Periya Annaiyaar) Panchavan Mathevi. She in the year A.D.995 gifted a gold image of Siva & Sakthi known as 'Umasahithar' to the temple of Thiruvidaimaruther. She further in the year A.D.1001 granted Tax-Free Land to the Temple as Thiruppugalur for festivities and offerings on the Sadaiyam day the nativity of Rajaraja Chola - 1 and her nativity day every month.

The construction of Pallippadai temple for Panchavan Maatheviyaar by Rajendra Chola - 1

Rajaraja Chola's chief queen (pattamahishi) Panchavan Maatheviyaar with no off-spring by Rajaraja Chola - 1 showed much love and affection to Rajendra Chola - 1 the son of Rajaraja by his second queen Thiribhuvanamaathevi alias Vaanavan Maatheviyaar. This relationship paved way for Rajendra Chola's special regard and devotion towards Panchavan Maatheviyaar his "Periya Annai", and on her death in the year A.D.1019 he built a "Pallippadai temple" named 'Panchavan Maathevieswarem' at Palaiyaarai alias Mudikonda Cholapuram in the present Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu. Rajendra Chola

The above are confirmed by the following References:

"(In the seventh year of Rajendra Chola - 1).....Land for worship and offerings to God in the Panchavan Maathevieswaram built as Pallippadai at Palaiyaaru alias Mudikonda Cholapuram in Thirunaraiyur Nadu, a sub-division of Ksatriya Sikamanai Valanadu........Lakulisvara Panditha who supervised the affairs of the temple......"
Inscription on the walls of Ramanathan Koyil in Palaiyaarai in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu
Annual Report on South Indian Epigraphy - Year 1927, Inscription No: 271

From the above Video we note of another information provided by the Temple Officers that there had been a mandapam in a highly dilapidated state and this mandapam and the Pallippadai of (Periya) Kundavi Naachchiyaar the elder sister of Rajaraja Chola - 1 both were brought down quite some years back, and the area where the Pallipadai mound stood could be still demarcated by them. Further research has to be done on same.

Hence I am of the opinion that it was Panchavanmadeviyar who
figures the earliest among the Queens in the inscriptions of RajarajaChola -1
being in his third year - was his "Patta Mahishi" or Chief Queen at the
time he became the Chola king in the year A.D.985.
